Title: When was the name changed from "Dumb Angel" to "SMiLE"? Post by: Micha on November 15, 2011, 07:53:47 AM I ask because I never thought that the song "Prayer" was a good opener to an album called SMiLE with that happy store owners on the cover - but it would make totally sense to open an album called "Dumb Angel" with a Gregorian-chant-like track like that.

This is a really good point. Never thought about it. I'm not a huge fan of the whole Our Prayer into H&V thing - never really worked for me, and now on TSS we have OP followed by Gee which is kind of like two openers. I think Gee as the opener would work much better, if H&V is to be the first track. Or Our Prayer into Good Vibrations instead. Title: Re: When was the name changed from \ Post by: Iron Horse-Apples on November 15, 2011, 03:54:27 PM Our Prayer is nothing like a Gregorian chant. I seem to remember Davis Leaf compares it to a gregorian chant in the t'fers booklet. I've read it somewhere anyway. These inaccuracies are read, digested, and then disseminated, but they stop when they reach this board. Embrace your inner pedant :lol Title: Re: When was the name changed from \ Post by: OneEar/OneEye on November 15, 2011, 04:32:03 PM I love "Dumb Angel" as a title, and i agree somewhat better suited to this music (imo) than "Smile". "Smile" could have been the title of their next album, released in the Summer of Love just prior to their headlining gig at the Monterey International Pop Festival.

Title: Re: When was the name changed from \ Post by: Bill Tobelman on November 17, 2011, 06:12:58 PM There's a point during the David Leaf SMiLE DVD where Van Dyke Parks says "it was Heaven on Earth" and this is where the "Angel" comes into play being the go-between Heaven & Earth. The "Dumb" part of the title means "silent" IMHO.
"Smile" has to do with laughter more than folks generally realize. You can see the two (smile & laughter) connected in Brian's opening remarks in his SMiLE Sessions introduction. As Brian told Michael Vosse when people laugh they can have a spiritual experience. This would mean Heaven on Earth. So this is how the two titles can be related. The opening prayer seems appropriate & "Gee" refers to Brian's bookstore riddle which led to his spiritual experience IMHO. So those two songs now seem related as well.
