Went to 3 wallmart"s in my area and nothing there.. I bought Gershwin lp at wallmart....Weird..With demise of the record//cd store.Tower..Virgin etc.. Unless you"ve got a computer.. Whats a guy gotta do..?..Best Buy aint what they used to be..When TLOS video came out i had to hit 3 Best Buy"s to find it..!

Smile won't be sold at Wal-Mart! It goes against the company's squeaky clean reputation! *end sarcasm*

Wallmart is phasing out their CD sections in stores, I understand.  In our local store, they are just carrying the top 20 CDs.  They have a huge cutout bin where they've thrown all the CDs they used to stock.

Costco used to carry many of the new releases.  No longer.  Though I did just pick up the 'Wish You Were Here' box set last week.

CDs will be gone like VHS in a couple of years.  What is coming are high resolution downloads (even 96 htz 24 bit) - whereby you can burn your own Blu-ray audio disks or CDs.  Burn your own/print your own - that's the future.

Ya know progress isnt allways a good thing..For us that are used to goin to a store + crusin thru bins.. Reading liner notes etc..lookin for used deals in ma + pop stores its cryin shame..And im computer stupid so im in trouble..I dont even own a computer.. I have to have a roommate that has one or its the library..!!.. I think music business is PUSHING it to cut costs..But its there fault cause cd"s cost to much.. And i heard they cost less to make than vinyl lp"s.. But the price went up..So they screwed themselves..GREED always screws things up..I believe downloads + cd"s + dvd"s can all co exist in market place if they are marked correctly...Look how most blue ray prices have come down.... Time marches on.. :-\ :violin

I really miss spending two hours in Tower Records. But yup, CDs that cost $1.50 to make marked at $15.99.

Quite sad really like a part of my youth gone. I use to love popping on the train to London, Then the tube to markets to see which CD's to buy (bootlegs or official), a few drinks by the river Thames, Pub lunch, golden summers. Ahhh the joys of being a Beach Boys fan...

If that's true it's the death knell for the cd. I guess some gas stations still sell them but who else?

Londons really a bit crap for record shopping, isn't it? Rough Trade is too expensive (although they tend to carry cool new stuff), Sister Ray is geared towards the rich bastards looking for 'status' albums for their barely used record player, the MVE's are overpriced and poorly stocked for what they are, which is bins of records and cds, nd the staff are nobs..... Bah.

Funny, they seem to have plenty of room for Justin Bieber CDs even though there's no music on the disc.

I agree about the shops down Berwick Street like Sister Ray being aimed at the 'status album' buyer but it's always been that way, although I did buy the first 4 Sonic Youth albums on vinyl from Selectadisc for a fiver each when they were reissued

I always went to the Record Exchange shops in Fulham, Camden and Notting Hill. Oh, and Camden market used to have lots of Cds we don't talk about, including where 'a friend' bought the In My Room boot

Believe me, get down to Bath and then tell me record shopping in London is crap!

Agree with surfrider 99%.  CD's will not die out, but they will become a niche, like vinyl now is, it's back for good, too.  Turntable sales are up, not down.  Finding CD's/vinyl will be harder, you will have to go to big city stores or Amazon-type mailorder distros.  Some fans will just want the band's own package, or get it at a gig as a souvenir.  And high-rez online downloads definitely have a future, especially for those storing their sound files on music servers.  But not everyone is going to sign up with iTunes, Spotify or Amazon Cloud, though most folks will. (Spotify right now seems to have the best model for online/cloud music access, they will likely rule that side of the street).  

Hypehat: you're right about Sister Ray, in terms of what they want for so-called "collectible" vinyl.  For newer stuff their prices were OK (i.e., not worse) and they had a couple sale items.  MVE and Virgin were disappointing.  Most peculiar when I was there: a good deal of the hot-off-the-presses stuff was from the US, which was a bother since I was there to check out the newest UK issues.  Cliff is right about the stores in Notting Hill and Camden Town, that was a pleasant surprise.

Yes, and we could see the rise of more 'small' music shops again.  In the US, Best Buy stores are also slowly reducing their CD inventories.  Borders is gone.

The Notting Hill MVE one was the one I had the most problem with. Such a joke and the selection is really common and overpriced, although the Soul and Classical shops were better. The Greenwich one fares a little better, as they tend to mark stuff down from its exorbitant initial pricing quicker, and the guys are a bit more chill. Haven't been to the Camden or Fulham ones.

Brighton is good for record shops, if you ever make it down - Across the Tracks is a favourite for crate digging soundtracked by grumpy old men discussing the intricacies of Zep vinyl and smacktalking each other the livelong day. Lots of other ones which sell eclectic old vinyl for decent money/new vinyl for reasonable prices. Ever since I moved, London has disappointed with it's record shops  :'(

My local Walmart had 4 copies of Disney.

I have had a hard time finding Smile anywhere. Best Buy had one box, and Barnes and Noble had 1 2-disc version ($35...as if). Maybe the album would have sold even more if, you know, it was actually on the store shelves where people could see it.

Best Buy always has more than Wal-Mart. If anyone goes to a Wal-Mart expecting to find what they want and can't find it, it's kinda their own fault imo. Shop elsewhere for your music like, y'know, a record store or at least something that's at least kind of a record store (i.e. Best Buy, etc. etc. etc.).

Yeah; I bought the box set online, but was planning to get the 2cd/2LP sets at the local independents. Bad idea, as neither carried them, it seems. Or if they did they only had 1-2 copies each, which were long gone when I got there. Hard to imagine not stocking the CDs at a minimum.

Everyone is, sadly. Still, I would never expect anything to be at Wal-Mart, of all places.

The Walmart where I live has ITKOD but not SS..and Best buy has SS but not ITKOD..Target has neither (or ANY beach boys cds for that matter) and those are the only places for miles that sell cds..

One of the drawbacks of living in a rural area is that if you don't want to go to Evil Empire Mart it's at least an hour drive to the closest town with more than one big box store or an actual record store.

Again, you have the internet. Regardless, my main point was that I thought it was funny that the original poster/others were expecting something to be at Wal-Mart of all places and were somehow disappointed when it wasn't there when we're talking about the furthest from a legit record store you can get, here. If it isn't extremely popular right this instant, good luck finding something there.

This is poppycock. Not going to happen. There will be CDs in stores past the end of next year, and likely for years to come. The music industry still makes more money on CDs than anything else.
