Title: Surf's Up (w/67 Vocal)
Post by: FatherOfTheMan Sr101 on November 08, 2011, 05:44:42 PM
I just sat in my studio for about 7 hours cleaning the piano from the 67 solo best I could, or at least making the vocal more prominent,
Then, I put it over the backing track, wa-lah!

Plus... there's a bonus ;)

The pitch from your two sources doesn't quite match up, does it?

Well, it wasn't ment to be pasted on, I brought the pitch up by about a semi-tone, and it fit well to my ears...

Read below :P

BTW: Forgot to mention, this is WIP, the coda needs to be touched up a bit :D

I had to get used to the pitch shifting, but very nice dub!

Thanks :D

I'm working on the piano fades, i'm actually thinking of just leaving the whole piano in, it really adds to the song!

And yes, chipmunk Brian is strange at first, but eventually it grows :D

TO-DO:

-Fix piano fades
-Clean up Coda

Why not change the key of the track?

Why not change the key of the track?

I tried it, I liked this better, the feeling stays the same, but I may change my mind after another listen...

Very, very nice! I'd be interested to hear a pitched-down track version, too.

That would be the best solution imo. That's what I plan to do. But this one's nice!

Just decided that lower = better, I also added as much tack piano as I could, I fixed the coda up and its almost perfect now!

Now, to "finish" part 2...

Yeah, I'm close to finding a cool solution for the lack of "Part 2" backing.

Also, I added Carl "dominoes" with Brian, it sounds SWWWWEEEETTTT!

Also, all lossless.

Win.

I decided not to do the part 2 thing, I was gonna isolate the 66 demo's piano and add a ton of reverb, I might do it sometime but...

here's the lossless finished product :D

Oh man, with all due respect, that sounds terrible. Pitch-shifting a 'poor' vocal performance to the 'album' track.. Changing the key of the track would be a better move. Also, your problem is that Brian is singing to an out of tune piano, so obviously his pitch will be following that, hence not really working with a pitched down track either.

Were you listening to the finished product WAV: (http://www.mediafire.com/?2bnkuevsd1uz2e4) or the preliminary MP3?

i already did this to see what it would sound like

(backing track phases out because of the lazy way i changed the pitch)

Both - and while the .wav is better it still has too much of a chipmunk effect. It works a helluvalot better with the track pitched down, despite the phase issues. None of the really work in my opinion though..

Is the problem inherently unfixable given the sources?

I also think a general problem with Surf's Up is that Brian's chord switch before the Dovenested Towers section isn't really right. It's like the bad join in the released single version of Strawberry Fields. I don't think Brian ever resolved that; was it just too high a mountain?

It's arguably the most complex composition a pop composer has ever attempted.

i think it sounds pretty sweet with the backing track pitched down. the mix of the Wild Honey piano with the vintage track is so good. Brian's vocal is so stellar and relaxed

I have to agree that the pitched down track version sounds great. But, wow, also have to agree that pitched up vocal sound like Bruce!!!
