Title: SMiLE as a double LP
Post by: Magic Transistor Radio on November 04, 2011, 09:51:38 PM
The songs for SMiLE nearly fill out 3 sides. I say nearly because side B (Wonderful - Surfsup) is not very long at all. But Brian was not too far away from making a strong double album with SMiLE. Just for my own amusement. I know some of these songs were post SMiLE, but I think this works well ...

Side A - the same

Side B - With Me Tonight
             Wonderful - Surfs Up
             He Gives Speaches

Side C - the same

Side D - You're Welcome
             Been Too Long
             Sail Plane
             Little Pad
             Diamond Head
             Old Man River
             Bag of Tricks

As events have proven, in reality Brian was some distance away from making any kind of a single album.

In Brian's mind that's true. Just saying there is enough good music here to do 1 1/2 albums. Maybe given a bit more time he could have pulled off a great double album.

I can dream can't I? My dreams are not subject to historical fact AGD  ;D

Mine follow a strict shooting script.  ::)

How about a 3 sided album, along the lines of Monty Python's Matching Tie & Hankerchief?

Sit on my face & tell me that you love me would be more appropriate

i don't see how smile ever would have been on a single lp.  I mean they printed the sleeves right? no way all those songs would have fit.

Which is why no way would all those songs have been on the album.

I think side 4 of an LP set could have been one long H&V's - all the variations flowing into each other.

The longest plausible Smile you can compile is about 50 minuets. 2 or 3 songs would have surley been cut (remember "Trombone Dixie"?), and there you have a great single Smile lp.

12 songs. I see no problem.

50 minuets, eh? :) (Milking the typo for all it's worth)

It's been a while, but with my last Smile mix I was able to make a 40something minute LP with the 12 songs listed. To me, making a comprehensive, flowing 2LP would be tougher than a single.

You can put together an under-40 minute, Dec'66 theoretical single LP pretty easily if you go by Brian's mono mixes and assemblies, the Capital memo and a little fudging around "The Elements". Bearing in mind the 12-track version was unlikely to have link tracks - and almost certainly no crossfading - the actual order of those 12 is up to you. Here's mine just for the sake of argument.

Side One:
Prayer 1.10
Do You Like Worms (with extended music box outro) 3.56
Heroes and Villians ("Cantina" with fade replaced by slow "boys and girls" or other section) 3.03
Wonderful (the usual) 2.00
Child is Father of the Man (Brian mono backing track) 3.03
The Old Master Painter (OMP/YAMS/Barnshine) 1.53
I'm in Great Shape (Workshop/IIGS/Chimes Intro or other section/Barnyard - ie. the other half of the original plan for "Heroes" and additional pieces based on Vosse's comments in Fusion) 3.23
Cabin Essence 3.34

Total: 19 mins

Side Two:
Good Vibrations 3.33
The Elements: Fire/Water 2.30-3.30 (depending what you use)
The Elements: Wind Chimes (full '66 Brian edit) 3.23
The Elements: Vega-Tables (total cheat, as this uses the March sessions. If you really wanted to be a '66 purist you could use the "demo") 3.09
Surf's Up (again, depending on level of purity, CFOTM reprise or no) 4.00 approx

Total time: 17-18 mins
Total album length: 36-37 minutes.

it's also an order that, edited right, is more satisfying as a narrative/musical experience than it might appear in print, and hits most of the major pre-'67 musical beats.

I can't see any reason why a single LP wouldn't have been possible - except, of course, that it wasn't.  :)
