Which version? 1-CD, 2-CD, 2-LP, box, download?

Not quite sure

Look for Capitol's deluxe box set of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys' legendary, but never released, original SMILE sessions, in a nifty 5-CD, two-vinyl LP package as well as a two-CD set, to score 20k.

That's really good, it's sure to be a steady seller, a lot of people are waiting for Christmas etc and the word of mouth is amazing, especially after the 10 from Pitchfork.

This estimate is only based on first day sales but HDD are usually on the money

It's amazing how sales figures have changed over the last 20 or so years. Right now, 20k copies is apparently amazing. What happened to the days where an album would sell 16 million copies in a few months, and usually 1 million copies on the first day??

Jay I don't remember sales like that, but I remember when Eminem was first getting started, and N*Sync and the Backstreet Boys were around.  I think on their best they were doing like 1.6million sales in the first week.  I don't know about 16 million in a few months but maybe world wide.

"What happened' to it was it became so easy to illegally download music that less and less people bought albums.  A lot of the album sales on those pop and hiphop albums were from teenagers who are the same group that are now most likely to download something, lol.

I think they could have solved the problem if they would have got CD's down to 5 bucks a pop.  People would pay 5 bucks for an official cd and the booklet, anything more than that they'll just download it.

Itunes has helped a lot, too, since it provides the benefits of mp3s along with a legal way to do it.

I used the 16 million figure kind of as a general example. I was mainly thinking of groups like Creed, and "boy bands" like you described. It's funny, I always used to argue that Napster and file sharing sites were actually helping the music industry. I always thought that if you downloaded a song and liked it, you would most likely buy the entire album(CD). That's what I would do, personally.

Personally, I hate Itunes, and most forms of digital media. It "cheapens" the experience. There is just something about holding an actual CD and booklet. It's the same thing with books. I'm an avid reader, and I was rather heartbroken when Borders closed.  ;D I want the full experience of holding an actual book in your hands, and feeling the pages. I even love that weird "book smell".  :lol Seeing the words on a digital Kindle or whatever the hell kids use today is just...cheating.

I agree with you about lowering CD prices. I remember hearing a story about Tom Petty having a huge fight with his record company because they were selling his album for $9.99 per vinyl album. I would LOVE to pay only $9.99 for a CD!  ;D There is a mall near where I live that charges up to $35.00 for a single CD. Just for a standard 12-15 song disc.  >:(

If they combine those figures for the first week, you're looking at something like #35 on Billboard (BWRG hit #26 with about 26,000) - IF the set doesn't get shunted into the catalog chart

That 20K looks like an estimate (sure to sell a million units in January) rather than a measuremet.

The word at the Smile release party on Tuesday night is that Smile sales have already surpassed Capitol's projections, which were of course too conservative...and that they are now "scrambling" to press more.

But it was supposed to be a limited run! I don't want any latecomer to get a box any more! I need the exclusivity! I am barking mad!

Billboard no longer discriminates against catalog material on the Top 200 LP chart, thus the reentry of Beatles 1 and Dark Side Of The Moon upon their recent re-releases. So, TSS should make an entry right about where you predict.

Multi-disc sets, as I recall from chart rules in the 90's, early 00s, which may have changed, do count for more than one unit.  I don't think each disc counts as a unit, but anything after the first disc is worth a fraction of a unit...not sure how it works now.  But if each boxed set counted for 3 units, wow!  It could hit top 10!

That is surprising to me.  I would think it would debut higher than BWRG.  I was thinking it would be close to BWPS, or higher.

It is amazing to me that BWPS will outchart the Beach Boys original recordings.

The ONLY reason for that is the order in which they were released.

This is great news that, along with the higher than expected sales of Dennis' Pacific Ocean Blue, will lead to even more vault opening and releases.  The labels have to see now that there is a market for this stuff.

Having a terrible time finding Smile in Hawaii.  Barnes and Noble - sold out.  Best Buy store 1 of 2, sold out.  Sam Goody (closed due to a fire - Ironic huh!)

That was totally predictable. Once the hard-core fans got theirs who else was going to buy it?? Regardless of the critical acclaim, the fact remains it's a special interest set of recordings, much of which consists of unfinished works. BWPS was a fully realized performance -  a VERY good one in fact - that a more casual fan would be much more likely to purchase than a collection of (many unfinished) works.

When you sit in this or any other fan site echo chamber it seems like everyone in the world is all excited about the doings of BW and the Boys. The fact is to the huge majority of people the BBs are an oldies act - albeit a good oldies act - and sales/chart position reflect that.

Artistic merit and commercial potential are two entirely different things. BWPS had great artistic merit and some commercial potential - TSS has great artistic merit and VERY limited commercial potential.

IMHO TSS is over commercially. There's no video to release, there's no hi-def recording (unlike BWPS which could generate some added sales in a DVD-A or SACD release), nothing left. Sad but true!

THis will go gold eventually with worldwide sales no ?

schools and libraries will buy copies of this, people wil
buy it as a gift, it will have long life and legs for years
to come.

They will get a million units total worldwide between downloads, box sets and the two disc set
plus in terms of dollars, the big set is really pricey, and the ancilliary merchandising,

The cost must have been high putting it together,, but this is a great thing,  A Historical document
a commercial product, and something that shows a profit eventually.

I am thrilled, havent got my two disc set yet, (Its my christmas present I dont know about)
