Title: How common will it be in stores?
Post by: ApolloSkye on October 25, 2011, 06:51:13 PM
Specifically the 2cd set. Is it likely to be at wal mart or best buy if i go the weekend after it's released?

Best Buy, I think is likely but not necessarily definite. Lawl-Mart, probably not.

well I hope they do some promotion and not just stick them on the shelves expecting people to know about it..one of those dislays would be cool to see at  walmart where they would display it with a huge cardboard cut out with "smile" and other Beach Boys related stuff such as tshirts dvds etc as well on the display but I'm not sure they will do that..

well I guess if they could do it for Garth Brooks (everytime he releases a new cd or greatest hits collection) or Dale Earnhardt (once a year around christmas time) I don't see why they couldn't do it with the beach boys..lol...they are just as "American" as they are..I'm assuming  that is what they are going for with those displays..

Garth Brooks has a contract with Wal-Mart. I would vomit in terror if the Beach Boys had a contract with Wal-Mart.

yeah it's funny because Capitol never has problems putting Beatle cds on the shelves..in fact my local target has a cool display that has not only Beatle cd's, but some reproductions of some of their 45's that come with a tshirt and the Ed Sullivan show dvd....

yeah but it would be cool to have a cool display like that one for the Beach Boys..especially for the most famous unreleased album in RNR history..

Good point.  Just for the sake of discussion, I'm wondering how everybody would feel if they were to find out there were going to be SMiLE display sections at all Urban Outfitters locations.  I know that Pet Sounds has been stocked on vinyl in their stores and probably still is.  Personally, I'd be cool with it, 'cause then I'd be able to grab a SMiLE shirt as well as the box set there and be happy.  But would I be annoyed when I saw five other people with the same shirt in the course of the next two weeks?  Hm, tricky.  I actually did buy a SMiLE shirt there about two years ago.  I couldn't believe it was there.  I'll post a picture if anybody is curious to see what it looked like.

Best Buy had Brian's new cd today, on release day.  I'd imagine they'd be even more likely to have the Smile Sessions.

Brian's Disney CD came out on Monday in the US.  I know Tuesday's are normally the day, but for some reason this week was different.

Well, I'll be going into my local HMV on the way into work Monday morning.

Then I'll be turning my phone off and diverting all my emails to a made up Hotmail address!

well it's not at my local Target ,which  is the closest place to me,and since we are about to have a snow storm here in colorado I may not be able to go across town to Best Buy or walmart because it looks like it may happen any minute so i may be forced to wait a couple days until the snow lets up  since I ride the bus everywhere..>:( >:( >:(

I've only been in an Urban Outfitters once in my entire lifetime...don't plan on going back anytime soon. They'd probably mark up the SMiLE box 50 bucks more than the suggested price anyway. It's nothing more than a "hipster" version of the Gap or Abercrombie...and wayyyy overpriced (at least the one I went into was.).

I went to Walmart this morning. Nope, not there. Which is sad because I probably won't get my 5CD set till tomorrow. I totally would have purchased the 2CD set if it was there. Ok, not too sad. I think Walmart can go without my $30.  :lol

Waiting for my box to arrive. In the meantime i'm having no luck finding the 2cd set anywhere. Was told that two stores may get it in later today or tomorrow. I did however see the box ontop of the counter next to the register at one of the stores.  There was a different box set ontop of it so i could only see a bit of SMiLE. It was a strange and very satisfying moment. By the way, the sticker on the box set said $180 (Canadian).

Waiting for it to arrive (ahould be today), went out to f.y.e music store (the only music shop in this town), there was one copy of the 2 cd release, no box sets and no promotion at all on display.  The 2 cd was hidden behind the few other BB's cd's there.  I moved it to the front.    ;)

Picked up my box set preorder at a local indie. The box set wasn't displayed anywhere, and based on my conversation with the guy that waited on me, they may have only ordered the box for me. They had a surprisingly large number of the 2 CD set though, including a display by the register and top listing on the little chalkboard with new releases as you enter the store. I paid $159.00 for the box, which I thought was reasonable, and the two CD sets were marked at $19.95.

BTW, I picked up one of those Smile shirts at Urban Outfitters too. A friend tipped me off to it. They also had shirts with the Endless Summer movie poster design at the time. The shirt is baby blue and says "The Beach Boys SMiLE" in the same font as the Frank Holmes cover art and has the smiling mouth.

I stopped at the best buy I drive by every morning, this morning, and just walked in and picked it up off the shelf.  It was in the Beach Boys section, and also in the "new releases' section.  Didn't look for the 5cd set, though.  25 bucks for the 2cd set.

I looked it up on Best Buy online, to see if the big boxed set would be at the nearest store.  I'd like to at least take a look at the package.  According to the website, the boxed set isn't at my local Best Buy or several others in the Bay Area.  It was shown in stock at exactly one, at a store that's about 15 miles away.  The 2 CD set is in stock at all of the local stores.  Best Buy used to have a huge section devoted to boxed sets, but now they can't be bothered.  They only have a couple of aisles left of CD's at my local store, so I guess they're lucky to get the 2 CD set in.

weird that Best Buys in the SF Bay Area don't have the box set on the shelves. The Best Buy here in Asheville, NC had both the box and the 2CD.

the local indie shop wanted $31.99 for the 2CD. that's 12 bucks more than hart's local shop!!!  >:(

I'll tell you what, if Murry was still alive, there'd be SMiLE displays out in every store. Capitol wouldn't have to do it, because he'd out there himself  in each store with a shovel, a hammer, and some nails, working away on Beach Boys displays.  Y'know, that's the problem with the boys in a nutshell. A lot of talent - maybe not as much talent as they think they have, but there's talent there - BUT NO DRIVE.

If Brian had just a smidge of Murry's honest work ethic in him, he'd be out there campaigning and setting up displays himself. But instead, he's loafing in his house, probably watching the 60's radio station on his big screen... and then calling the station up to tell them how cool it would be if they played music videos once in awhile. What's the matter with these kids?

It took every ounce of energy Murry had to keep those knuckleheads working and unified. They second they kicked him out was the second the whole thing unraveled. That's why Smile didn't come out. If Murry had still been in charge, he would've shown Brian that the father really is father to the man or child or whatever and made him piece those sections together. They spent thousands and thousands on 'em. All that investment wasted.

You couldn't do that in machinery - invest thousands in designing and purchasing the parts for new machines, but then not assemble machines. Not if you wanted to stay in business. That's lunacy. Christ. Just watching this Smile debacle continue makes me feel like I'm gonna have a heart attack. But then they have the nerve to tell you to feel sorry for Brian. Murry was a genius and without his brains, what did you expect to have happen to the Beach Boys? They imploded.  And they brought that upon themselves by coldly rejecting the loving care of their father.

yeah it's too bad Murry didn't produce Smile.."out in the barnyard,do be do be doo doo, chickens do their number,be bop ee doo doo" , "I'm picking up,do be do,good vibrations" or "doo be doo be do be doooooooo" (our prayer) ..unfortuantly Smile just hasn't enough synchopation or doo be doos...

A visit my local independent retailer (Zia Records, Oracle) turned up 2 copies of the TSS box on offer at $139.99, 2 copies of the vinyl and prominent display of the 2 CD set in "New Releases" at $25.99.

Pretty darn good I'd say.

My local Best Buy has no TSS items at all. Same for Barnes and Noble.

Best Buy did have loads of something like "10 Great Songs by The Beach Boys" and NO OTHER BB MATERIAL at all.

At both stores, the floor space devoted to recorded music in a physical form has greatly diminished in the past year.  At Big Box there wasn't even a "Music" sign hanging from the ceiling.

The wife and I were at Wal Mart last night, so I checked to see if they had anything and [sarcasm mode: on] to my surprise, they had.....NOTHING!  Not surprising in the least.

I'm going to Best Buy today to pick something else up and will check there as well.

Despite having to wait all day for the thing to arrive, I'm glad I went the Amazon route for the box.  It seems as if SMiLE is pretty scarce around my area.

I went to my local Best Buy yesterday and they had 2 copies of the box and 0 copies of the 2 cd or single cd versions.

My local independent store had several 2 cd versions, but no box sets.

They did have a huge oversized cardboard version of the album cover that they are selling when they are finished with it.  I was the first person to give them my name and phone number, so as long as they don't keep it for their store, I'll own it for $14.99.  I'm going to build a frame for it.  I don't know the exact measurements of it, but I'd say it's close to 3 feet wide by 3 feet long.  It'll be going in my man cave.  I have no idea when I'll get it, but when I'm done framing it, I'll take a picture for you all.
