Title: Generally speaking, Do you listen more to BB Vinyl or CD's? Post by: Freddie French-Pounce on October 22, 2011, 10:59:28 AM Its in the title. What do you tend to listen to more, Vinyl LP's or CD's? Personally, It's always records for me (Summer In Paradise being the exception - I'm not paying £60+ for the LP - And yes, I like that album) since I have all the albums, and only a couple of CD's. And surely thats the way God intended it, no?

Post by: JohnMill on October 22, 2011, 11:34:47 AM I would guess I'd categorize myself as a vinyl aficionado but when it comes to The Beach Boys' the only vinyl I own is a copy of "Pet Sounds". So it's CDs for me as far as BB goes.

My physical collection of Beach Boys albums is quite small, actually. CD: Surfin' Safari / Surfin' USA Surfer Girl / Shut Down Smiley Smile / Wild Honey Friends / 20/20 In Concert Stars and Stripes Vol. 1 (case only, CD has been missing since a few days after I bought it, probably gone forever) BWPS What I Really Want for Christmas Songs from Here and Back VINYL: Surfin Safari Little Deuce Coupe Concert Party Smiley Smile Wild Honey Friends In Concert POB/Bambu LA KTSA Looking Back with Love BB85 Brian Wilson BWPS That Lucky Old Sun and some off-label compilations I have a few 45s but I don't know where they are and I've barely listened to them so I can't even remember what they are. I know one of them is Do It Again / Wake the World. and next week (!!!!) the Smile boxset Title: Re: Generally speaking, Do you listen more to BB Vinyl or CD's? Post by: Andrew G. Doe on October 23, 2011, 12:30:03 AM I've not listened to any vinyl in my collection since... oh, maybe 1990. Have a record deck, but not exactly sure where.

Now if only the stereo mix of PS was available on vinyl. It is, but its quite collectible. The one with the Mono LP on transparent yellow vinyl and the Stereo LP on transparent Green vinyl. I have also seen a normal stereo issue on Rhino. Title: Re: Generally speaking, Do you listen more to BB Vinyl or CD's? Post by: Micha on October 23, 2011, 11:36:40 PM Mostly mp3s. A kind soul provided me with rips of the mono versions of the pre-1965 albums, and that along with audio rips of the 1965-66 albums is all I ever listen to when I go jogging.
I'd listen to LPs a lot more if I was still a teenage kid with large amounts of spare time available. Last Friday, I urged to listen to Pet Sounds over my stereo. Out of convenience I tried the 1990 CD remaster, then the PS box set remaster, did not manage to EQ it to my liking, finally put on a 70s vinyl pressing - tadaa! About 50/50 on CD/vinyl. Now if only the stereo mix of PS was available on vinyl. I have that. Title: Re: Generally speaking, Do you listen more to BB Vinyl or CD's? Post by: richardsnow on October 24, 2011, 12:08:47 AM I've got the PS stereo mix on vinyl.
Have to say that although I have a complete Beach boys lp vinyl collection and 99% of the 45's I mostly listen to the CD's. But that's because most of the UK pressings 65-69 are a bit horrible. Pet sounds in particular. the mono pressing appears to have been cut from a fold down of the "stereo" duophonic version so it's all doubled and echoey. Same goes for UK pressing of GOK/WIBN 45rpm I've got a US pressing of Little deuce and that sounds fantastic., as do the US singles. Title: Re: Generally speaking, Do you listen more to BB Vinyl or CD's? Post by: Austin on October 24, 2011, 06:46:26 PM Mostly high-quality M4As and MP3s.
I've got several albums on vinyl and CD, but that's just because I was lucky enough to find them by accident in record stores. 99% of my music listening is when I'm away from my desk and home. (This would make an interesting survey, by the way.) Title: Re: Generally speaking, Do you listen more to BB Vinyl or CD's? Post by: hypehat on October 25, 2011, 05:26:07 AM Vinyl, when I can. This is a problem with the holes in the collection - Don't have Friends, 20/20, Wild Honey, Sunflower*, Summer Days, or anything pre All Summer Long. Endless Summer gets a regular spin. But as some of my favourite stuff is unreleased/bonus tracks on twofers/live, i listen a lot to my cds and computer. Always listen to PS on vinyl, though.
*If I may rant, I bought a copy of Sunflower with Cottonfields tacked on the front for £3 ages ago, but left it round a friends house. She has given to it another friend, who claims ignorance of the fact. Goddammmmdhzbjaefrzfg Title: Re: Generally speaking, Do you listen more to BB Vinyl or CD's? Post by: absinthe_boy on October 25, 2011, 01:16:08 PM Vinyl. I actually don't own ANY Beach Boys CDs...not that I have the full discography. I generally find CD's unlistenable compared to the same material on vinyl - and I've tried several CD players in my time from $20 portables to players costing 700 quid.
The only Beach Boys I have in digital format is the DVD-Audio of Pet Sounds, which does compare to the vinyl. Indeed I'm not convinced either one is better than the other. But you need a pukka DVD-Audio machine to play it properly. I do own BWPS on CD as I collected every damned thing connected with that release.
