Do we REALLY need Bruce? How about just bringing back Blondie instead? And maybe put Jack Reiley back in charge at Brother?

Bring back Dennis and Carl! Or else the reunion won't be as good.

For some reason I don't see Brian committing to a whole tour, maybe only like two or three special dates, so using this logic, the BW Band members wouldn't be part of the band. Theoretically.

Now it's interesting to me that people are so willing to use all these sidemen and NOT Blondie and Ricky. They were official members! They were in the publicity photos, they sang and wrote songs! The Beach Boys only had two official drummers, Dennis and Ricky. Dennis having passed on will be unable to drum, so WHY NOT RICKY?

The "classic lineup" was of course Brian, Mike, Carl, Al and Dennis, but I feel that Blondie and Ricky are only slightly less "important" than David or Bruce.

bvs.

Plus, I don't see the 'reunion' being more than a handful of dates: Alan's bright idea for 60 US shows and another 40 around the world is about as workable as it is sensible.

Agreed. That line up, while always deferential, was a million miles away from the striped shirts brigade and gave the band cool & cred.

Darian Sahanaja - keyboards, mallets, vocals
Probyn Gregory/Scott Bennett - guitars, general doo-dads, vocals

I guess that's the list for the "Do it again" re-recording, right ? I think this would be a good band. But I think Foskett could also play some guitar

I would go with the obvious, Brian, Mike, David, Al, and Bruce.  After that you really can't go wrong with anyone from the current touring outfits.  If it were up to me...

Billy Hinsche - keys, vocals
John Cowsill - drums, vocals
Christian Love - acoustic guitars, keys, Carl's vocal parts
Matt Jardine - percussion, vocals
Randell Kirsch - bass, vocals
Darian Sahanaja - keys, mallets, vocals
Jeff Foskett - guitars, banjo, vocals
Probyn Gregory - french horn, trumpet, guitars, woo-woo machine, vocals
Paul von Mertens - reeds
Any old string/horn section from just about any old university/local symphony in any old country - strings, horns

Christian Love because he sounds more like Carl, vocally, than anyone else I've heard.
Cowsill/Kirsch because they have a good working relationship as a rhythm section.
Sahanaja/Foskett because they know their sh*t, and they are a good support system for Brian.
Gregory/von Mertens because they can cover most of the prominent horn parts.
All touring groups are represented.
Strings and horns can be hired out locally for a lot less money than someone like SS&H, and really, any competent player can play the parts.

Jeff Foskett - sitting at home
Brian, Mike, Al, David, and Bruce - whatever
Darian - whatever
Anyone else - anything else

Perfect list of candidates for the backing band. It's also a nice crosssection of the three working bands out there. :)

It'd be AMAZING if they could get the Wrecking Crew folks on a few dates as it would make perfect sense but in reality it'd be great if were (using AGD's list mostly but)...

Brian - keyboards
Mike
Alan - guitar
Bruce - keyboards/knee socks/tennis shorts
David - guitar

Jeff Foskett - vocals
Nicky Wonder - vocals/guitar
Paul von Mertens - horns, arrangements
Mikey D'Amico - drums
Brett Simmons - bass (Never liked Bob Lizik's playing - though he's really talented. 6-string bass and fingers? Save that for an R&B/funk band. The Beach Boys' bass tone is always picked/muted)
Darian Sahanaja - keyboards, mallets, vocals, EVERYTHING.
Probyn Gregory/Scott Bennett - guitars, general doo-dads, vocals
Nelson Bragg - percussion (as NOBODY nails that stuff as well as he does.)

Stockholm Strings & Horns

Guests:
Ricky Fataar - drums ("Sail On, Sailor")
Blondie Chaplin - guitar, vocals ("Sail On, Sailor", "Wild Honey")

LostArt, I agree with you on Christian Love. He's part of the family and he does sound very like Carl. I was at the Epsom UK gig and when he joined in singing God Only Knows, it sounded more like the original than when Bruce took the lead! He has a very soft tone, like Carl. Saying that, no one can ever match Carl's voice!

This was posted by Christian on the german messageboard regarding the musicians for DIA:

Scott Totten - lead guitar
John Cowsill - drums
"and a couple of Brianīs band"

Bayers said that he played on new Brian stuff iirc.

Anyway for live concerts I don't wanna see/hear the wrecking crew, the Beach Boys Band from the 70s but a mix of Brian's and Mike's troups plus Billy Hinsche and Ed Carter. You need young blood and not the ol' farts no matter how ood they are/were.

I could do without Jeff Foskett.  A couple of guys can play circles around him on guitar, and Matt Jardine can sing circles around him vocaly.

Just in case anyone missed it, that sounds like the surest confirmation I've heard that a reunion's happening (unless I'm misreading of course).

I vote for at least one major festival appearance (Sasquatch, Bonnaroo, Coachella). Could be a good place to do some of their hipper stuff with an audience that digs it.

I say let`s force the oldies/surf/Kokomo crowd to listen to the hip stuff. Shove All This Is That, Feel Flows, SU, Cabinessence, Trader, Friends, Cuddle Up, POB, Love You, etc. etc. down their throats if need be. I want to see throngs of people screaming for Ding Dang and Little Pad instead of Barbara Ann and Fun Fun Fun.

Quite surprised that people are suggesting so many backing band members have 'vocal' roles. I can see that the few remaining BBs couldn't possibly handle all the parts, but I would want to limit the number of additional vocalists where possible. Vocally I'd suggest:

Mike
Brian
Al
Bruce
Jeff - I think Brian needs Jeff's support with his vocal parts live (and he has the history) , but would prefer Matt on falsetto
Matt - doing the falsetto (if not, for any reason, I love Randell's falsetto as well)
Either Christian Love (but can he actually handle complex arrangements or is he primarily a lead singer?) or John Cowsill to fill in the 'Carl' mid-range parts.

Not to say that Darian, Scott et al are not great singers. But that would feel and sound to me like BB's joining Brian's band rather than a BB reunion.

And... just how many members of Brian's band pitch in with bvs live ?  ;D

PS: I don't think Christian has any interest in this kind of thing. Just the feeling I'm getting.

That would be a shame AGD if Christian didn't want to get involved. He looked in his element at Epsom and I was a fan of his voice. I really want the reunion to happen. It might not end up the way we all want it to but it will be a good thing to see them all again. They all have good shows at the moment. There should be a good amount of reference to Carl and Dennis though.

I'm going to guess it will/would be Mike and Bruce band [the corprate designate] plus guest artists. Maybe from past bands and current noncorporate designate bands and assorted family, friends, etc..

I'd also guess a reunion tour would/could easily go on without Brian as the rest are more accustomed to touring without Brian then with.

Title: Re: Beach Boys reunion Backing band?

I know Brian is comfortable with Jeff covering his vocals, but the problem is that you end up hearing almost all Jeff.  I think Brian is certainly capable of performing without Jeff, but it's easy to lean on a crutch.  I'd much rather see Jeff not be a part of this.  Matt Jardine would be the best vocal choice.  I've never felt the emotion in Jeff's voice that Matt Jardine can bring to the table.  Just listen to Matt sing "The Warmth Of The Sun".  I really think Jeff needs Brian more than Brian or The Beach Boys needs Jeff.
