Title: some controversy over "I loves you porgy"
Post by: joshferrell on October 20, 2011, 04:33:57 PM
at the local bar where i go to i have songs that I like to play on the jukebox and one of the songs is Brians version of "I loves you porgy",I like to play it because I like the jazz feel of it and like sharing Brians more underrated stuff, last night there were these two gay men who hang out at the bar from time to time, they are very nice but last night when the song was playing they assumed it was a "gay Song" because of the lyrics, they kept on calling it "elle Fitzgerald,I tried to explain to them that it was off of a "gershwin tribute cd" that Brian had recorded and that Brian wasn't gay,I told them that I think he recorded it becauee he just liked the soeng and that there wasn't any kind of messages in it,a couple weeks ago another guy (a straight guy)told me that people may think I'm gay if I play the song because it appears to be a man singing to another man and kind of laughed it off,so I'm not sure what to think of it or how to respond..don't get me wrong but they were all cool about it and didn't seem offended but I just thought it seemed kind of strange that people would react to it that way..any thoughts?

Put this in the Sandbox because, well, it's really not BB-related.

It's good to know human stupidity knows no bounds. It's a Gershwin song. Yeah, it's meant to be sung from a woman's perspective. Brian sings the song as HE KNOWS IT.

Tell them you're extremely gay (yes, there's a difference between gay and extremely gay) just to spite/annoy/keep them away from you. Tell them you'd like a sampling of their "ass buffet" if you'd like to keep them away for good.

imo.

Not sure if you mean he should move away from this town or literally move the town away from him. I'm in favor of either.

Ella Fitzgerald did one of the most famous versions of the song.  Sounds like your gay friends are some cultured dudes that had already been exposed to Gershwin.

I can't tell from the OP whether the two gay men were admiring the song or not. Sounds like they're fans of the song and the Fitzgerald recording?
Personally, I thought it was wonderfully open-minded of Brian to record a song that's from a woman's perspective, kind of like he had no problem performing "I Sleep Alone." Who cares? "I Loves You Porgy" is a beautiful song, and one of Brian's best vocals of recent years. And for that matter, who cares if anyone thinks you're gay or Brian is gay? (By the way, years ago Natalie Merchant wrote a song called "My Beloved Wife," from the perspective of an old man who has just lost his wife after a happy, decades-long marriage. She thought it was a beautiful sentiment, and that's why she wrote the song. She sang it, too, even though she's a straight woman who was in her 30s at the time.)
Just keep listening to the music you love.

How is Brian singing from a different gender perspective any different than Brian singing about surfing? He's just as much of a surfer as he is a woman.

My favorite part of the 'Porgy' saga is that Brian's management and the record company tried to talk him out of this. But he insisted. The fact that he stood up for this kind of crazy choice is one of the reasons I love BWRG -- he cared deeply about the record.

Exactly - Brian "Path Of Least Resistance" Wilson walked into Disney's offices and said 'I want to make this album first'. It really came across when I saw it live - the effort he put into singing the first set as opposed to, idk, Fun Fun Fun was quite striking.

BWRG was a project which Brian really cared about and the live show of it was amazing when I saw performed.
