The workshop sounds on "Do It Again" are from "I Wanna Be Around."

There's a section of "Look" in "Good Vibrations," but I'm not sure if that would be included since it was done before SMiLE was scrapped.

This ever been confirmed? I don't know if I agree with it, nor the claims that "Whistle In" was based off of part of the song.

And arguably alluded to in "Whistle In" -- compare "Remember the day..." to "Wahalaloolay..."


Specifically the end: "Little bird up in a tree looked down and sang a song to me, a trout in a shiny brook..."


Except the tail end, which was used as the "whispering wind" portion of the Smiley Smile version of "Wind Chimes." Also possibly used in the beginning of "Happy Days" on Imagination.


Aaaaaaaand....also in the full "Cool, Cool Water." It's the same chord pattern, with some of the same musical orchestration.

Oh...and the piano riff in "Wind Chimes" was later recycled in "Can't Wait Too Long."

The G minor -> C7 motif in Do You Like Worms which is commonly called "Bicycle Rider" was changed to the key of C# (D#m -> G#7) when it was incorporated into Heroes and Villains for its chorus.

On his '95 "I just wasn't made for these times"-soundtrack, Brian recorded "Wonderful" in the Smile arrangement.






Was the "whispering winds"-part written during/for Smile or for Smiley Smile ?

I'm not sure when the vocal part was written, but even though it's a capella it fits on top of the end part of Holidays perfectly, so it's Brian reusing that same melody or whatnot.

Nice catch. I never thought of "Remember the Day.." as being a derivitive of "wahala lul lei".  :3d

I don't hear the worms/little Pad connection - what is this? Somebody recently suggested that the chorus melody of Little Pad sounds like an offspring of H&V, specifically the western theme melody, which I can hear.

The Dada intro is also a reworking of the wahalaluley melody from Worms, but obviously Dada wasn't from a later album so doesn't qualify for this thread.

Also, the "Heroes and Villains" theme/chants inspired the organ part on "Gettin' Hungry."


Yes, the "Hawaiian" part of "Worms" is the vocal melody of "Whistle In" (with some adjustment), but it's also laid over the chorus of "Look" (which answers your question about "Look"), which provides the music for "Whistle In."

Similar rhythm, but the melodies/chords aren't similar at all. I would chalk this one up to coincidence, as I would "Worms" being related to "Little Pad".

They're much closer than "Worms" and "Little Pad."

Play them back to back.

All "Pad" has in common with Smile is woodshop sounds, the mention of Hawaii, and a title similar to "Cabin Essence."

That vocal line in "Vega-tables" with the top ascending and the bottom descending later was reworked to become "Going On" from KTSA.

Actually, the melody is pretty much exactly the same and given how close they were recorded and that Brian was recycling or reworkng much of Smile on Smiley, it's difficult to suggest that this is a coincidence.

"Pretty much exactly the same"? You lot tone deaf?

"Worms?" has nothing to do with "Little Pad" or "Whistle In". The "Worms?" section with the Hawaiian chanting is slightly similar to the "Remember a day" melody in terms of rhythm, but only about half-similar, and the melodies themselves are almost completely different.

Not everything on Smiley Smile was recycled, keep in mind. I don't hear the "Tones" and "Little Pad" similarities, either, and I'm not sure why anyone would just pull it out of their ass that Carl wrote "Tones" considering Brian wrote basically everything in those days.
