Title: Pre Beach Boys Recordings
Post by: Slow In Brain on September 23, 2011, 07:41:44 PM
With the 50th will any pre BB 1961 recordings be exhumed .

Brian did some demos in his early teens.

I don't think I'd want to share my demo acetates, given the choice.

Pre-BB, the only one I'm aware of is "Chapel Of Love" for Art Laboe in 1957.

Al and his friends recorded pre BB

What survived from Brians' teen aged tape experiments ?

Well... there's the hidden track on the 1993 box... the "Garage Tapes" boot. The Rich Sloan 'boogie-woogie' tape... that's all that comes to mind right now.

So what was the story with the Wollensak tapes?

Who had them and how did they end up booted?

David Marks recorded an original instrumental with John Maus and Richie Podolor in 1959.

Gosh, how old was "Skid" then, 12?

Aadrew (or anyone): any idea where the legality of what would have been First Wave now lies? That must be a no brainer for the 50th, if the legal rights are, erm, legally in the right hands, but I know that was a very grey area when Brad tried to release it.

Always wanted to have that 2-CD set "First Wave". It was almost a go, then Brad had to pull the plug because of a threatening letter from who was it, Bruce Morgan? What was that, about, 2000? 2001-ish?  Always wondered if it ever got to the point where CD's were pressed. I sent him an e-mail and remember him replying that they were going to be stamped out that week and would be available shortly. Then nothing. Then nothing from him at all about nothing soon after that....

I had two copies ordered.  I'm hoping that in the spirit of all things celebratory and 50th those orders will be honoured very soon …

 :lol  :lol

:deadhorse

Wasn't Brad working with Bruce Morgan on that, then BRI sent the threatening letter, despite most of the tracks having been available on a million and one budget vinyls releases since I dunno when?

The injunction - which came allegedly just before Christmas 2000 - was from Brother, who after something like 31 years of not bothering that the Morgan sessions were being released in lo-fi on any number of two-bit compilations, suddenly decided they owned the tapes and demanded $80 million from Brad, Bruce Morgan and Surf's Up Records. Whatever else you might say and/or think about Brad's subsequent financial dealings, in this instance he was clearly the victim and was very shabbily treated. From what I was hearing at the time, some CDs had been pressed: no idea what happened to them.

Brad, btw, now resides in Houston, or so I'm told, and evidently keeps an eye on the net.

That's what it was, Brother Records sent Brad the threatening letter. Hite Morgan's son Bruce was working with Brad on the project.

Mr. Elliott, if you're reading this, please send me an e-mail.  I'd still like copies of those CD's!  I promise I won't tell anybody!  ;D

How is it that First Wave never leaked? (And AGD -- any chance you'll add that to your "unreleased" section of your web page?)

BTW, fwiw, I pre-ordered it, and Brad gave a couple of options: 1) refund, or 2) wait and see, something might come about. I chose a refund. Lots of people say Brad didn't make good on his word, but he did with me; I got the refund within two weeks, tops...

Not really, as the material has been released.

Not pre-BB - it was recorded 3/8/62 - and not BB anyway. Lead vocal Brian, bvs (allegedly) Carl, Alan (by then out of the band), Audree and Val Poliuto.
