Title: Indian Wisdom / Friends Post by: David Kennedy on September 15, 2011, 11:41:48 AM Since Indian Wisdom is from a "Friends" session does anyone think there was ever a real intent to put it on the album? The only place I can find where it somewhat could fit would be after Diamond Head. Any thoughts?
Title: Re: Indian Wisdom / Friends Post by: ghost on September 15, 2011, 11:59:40 AM It would be cool if they finished this track and it included the quote from the back of the Smiley Smile album jacket.

The track that bootleggers called "IW" (and also "Doves Of Peace") is listed on the tape box as "New Song". "IW" was the byline of a quote on a Hallmark product that was used on the back sleeve of Smiley Smile. Indian wisdom [TM] for twenty minutes in the morning and twenty in the evening has been shaping and influencing Mike Love & Al Jarine for 40 years now. If being picky is referring to something by using its correct title and not a working title or something no-one in the band ever called it, then fine, I'll happily be picky. Do you still call NYC "New Amsterdam" ? ;D Title: Re: Indian Wisdom / Friends Post by: runnersdialzero on September 15, 2011, 11:42:44 PM You and I both have repeated this info how many times and yet people still keep asking for some reason. This is the same mentality that has the Beach Boys permanently stuck in the mindset of most people as a "surfing band". I was just trying to say that Indian Wisdom is a more familiar title to hardcore fans. When you say "Indian Wisdom" or "Untitled Guitar Instrumental", most people here would know exactly what song you're talking about. But a generic title like "New Song" could be anything, unless you're a fanatic who does more research than most people would. That is why there is such a thing as research. It has been proven, not by Andrew, but rather Alan Boyd (you know, the dude who actually really knows a thing or two about their music which is much more than I can say for most people here), that the track in the vaults on a 3/26/68 reel labeled "New Song" is the so-called "Indian Wisdom" or "Spanish Guitar Instrumental". I'll take what's written on the tape box unless the band has a better idea. By your same (flawed) logic, we should all just call Love You the Farting Moog Album. Or Barbara Ann "Bomb Iran". :) Title: Re: Indian Wisdom / Friends Post by: puni puni on September 17, 2011, 11:29:09 AM man does everyone really need to make fart jokes toward one of the best albums ever recorded

I knew Indian Wisdom or Dove whatever was the wrong title for the song but I knew that most people would know what track I was talking about it if I called it by that name instead of "New Song" which is the right title. I was only asking that if "New Song" was at one point really considered for the Friends album and where did you guys feel that it fit the best on the album. I guess I should have called it "New Song" from the beginning and if i offended anyone with calling it "Indian Wisdom" then I am sorry I just wanted to know where the track would have fit on the album if it would have made the final cut. Title: Re: Indian Wisdom / Friends Post by: ghost on September 18, 2011, 09:13:08 AM Yes Sir!
I always thought this track - whatever be its glorious name - was really cool. Although am I getting it mixed up in my head with The Letter? I haven't heard India- I mean, new song, or whatever, in a while... The Letter as Brian sang it always sounded like it had an evil first few bars. That's how Injun wisdom sounded to me, like Brian was going for kind of creepy. To scare Smile Brian. Title: Re: Indian Wisdom / Friends Post by: WaxOn on September 18, 2011, 09:27:20 AM oh ho ho hum. okay, "Font" I guess was too specific of a word. but even if these characters were hand-drawn, they clearly follow a consistent letterform. the reason I asked is because for awhile I've wanted the phrase "The smile that you send out returns to you" as a tattoo. If you're interested, then I suggest you research Art Nouvea type. You can find fonts on the internet (many free to download), but your best choice would be books for truly old letter forms. Typically, general rules are followed but modifications are made depending on the artist - these are called "swashes" which may be applied to the ascenders, descenders, shoulders, bowls, bars and arms of a letter. Note the "A" and "O". Then again, if you're taking this to a tat artist - just print out the card and they'll be able to replicate it? It's not like you're gonna be sticking your arm in a laser printer. |
