Title: Do You Like Worms on Inside Pop
Post by: puni puni on September 01, 2011, 10:47:31 PM

I watched the entire "Rock Revolution" doc but didn't see that part. Is it available anywhere else?

It never occurred to me how great the wahalaloolei melody was.

The footage used in American Band is taken from silent footage that Dennis shot while they were filming "Inside Pop" in the studio.  The music was reconstructed by examining what keys Brian was playing on the piano.

hurray, i knew i had seen this clip.

i have a question though- why did Brian and the boys get into a very strange bag? surely one cognizant of health risks would not willingly climb into a very strange bag in case of suffocation.

That is, without question, highly questionable.

Brian is NOT playing what's heard there.  Whatever he is playing is much more in keeping with his piano style: repeated right hand chords, and simple bass notes in the left hand.  He's no way playing that melody with his left hand, as the film implies.

Furthermore, the hands are much farther apart than the faked music on the soundtrack is.

It's near impossible to see what he is playing there, thanks to the lighting, but it's something like the end of Surf's Up, or the Wind Chimes stack-o-pianos section.  Or pretty much any of Brian's 'feels'.

I hate to go all Al on you, but to me, that bit never sounded like Worms.

The music is definitely from "Worms" (that is, a piano simulation) -- the pseudo-Hawaiian chant in a different time signature. The "keenee waka poo la" part is especially clear as a bell...

Always reminded me of "Whistle-In"... which is of course a riff stolen from "Worms".  :)

Has that ever actually been confirmed? I hear similarities in rhythm but not much in the way of music.

"Remember the day, remember the night" = "[Wa/Ma]halalu lay, [Wa/Ma]halalu la" or however the heck you spell fake Hawaiian words.

If he's not playing that part we know of as the Hawaiin bit in Worms, how did the people that made the video know about Worms to have someone record it over the video of him playing? Seems more like they heard him playing something and then tried to replicate it later.

I was told by the producers a few years after the video was released that they got someone in to 'read' what Brian was playing. Footage was silent.

Any idea how much of that sequence they had to work from?
