August 31, 2011 9:10 AM ET Mike Love and Al Jardine of the Beach Boys in the studio during the recording of 'Smile'Michael Ochs Archives/Getty ImagesThe Beach Boys' Smile, the record originally planned as the follow-up to their 1966 classic Pet Sounds but scrapped mainly due to creative mastermind Brian Wilson's fragile mental health at the time, is set to be officially released for the first time as The Smile Sessions on November 1st. The record, which will be issued as a 2CD set, double vinyl LP, digital album and box set, was carefully completed, compiled and sequenced by the surviving members of the band from the original master tapes.

Welcome to ages ago !  ;D (it DOES seem like ages to me, things have been moving so fast recently...)

The first post of the smile thread really needs to be updated with the important info
I'm not sure people would read the first post. I think a temporary sticky would be better.

As it seems, in the box set H&V part 1 &2 are on the vinyl single only and not on the CDs. It could be that they're inside one of the other listed tracks, but that's not for sure.

I thought I'd continue this thread by asking are there any "essential" tracks that are still missing??

1. Barnyard (Vocal Session)
I'm bringing this one up because I am worried that the Barnyard track that is on CD1 will be edited and we won't have the full song... unless the Vocals were recorded with the Master Take. I'm not sure.

2. Water Chant

3. Little Red Book
I have always associated this song as being a possible b-side of H&V although now I've been told that it is a recording from 68. Is that right?

4. With Me Tonight
We got 2 minutes and 48 seconds of this tracks. Is that enough time for the 3 versions we know of?

5. Cabin Essence (Vocal Sessions)
This one surprised me the most! Were are the sessions for this?

Please correct me if I'm wrong. Any other thoughts?

LRB is from the "Friends" sessions.  The veggie version of "With Me Tonight" is on HAWTHORNE so if that version isn't on this new boxset you can pick it up on Hawthorne.  The Water Chant is probably attached to "I Love To Say Da-Da" on disc one just like on BWPS which in itself might be based off the SOT 16 mix who knows?  The other stuff?  Your guess is as good as mine.

What I found interesting over the weekend is apparently there is material to be found on that "Complete Smile Sessions" (bootleg) that isn't available on the various collectors cds.  Stuff like H&V (takes 2-3) and stuff of that nature.  Hmmm.

Another thing: "Psyco"delic Sounds instead of Psychedelic Sounds? What is that about?

I would wager the water chant is part of "Dada"

Edit: This mix is a minute longer then the GV box set so I'm almost 100% sure that's the case.

DYLW is six seconds shorter on TSS than Purple Chick--the length of the "woo woo woo" bit, so I'm guessing that's been excised, esp. since it's already in H&V.

Mods--could you pin this thread?  It serves everyone to have the track list handy, esp. since Amazon took it down.

One of my favourite pieces of SMiLE music that i've ever heard I discovered on utube one day whilst casually browsing - it was sessions for a backing track to Wind Chimes, but not the one as heard on the GV boxset. It didn't feature the bass line, instead it was a harpsicord (or similar), and it was breathtakingly beautiful! I listened to it endlessly, but then it was suddenly taken off utube and I've never been able to track it down since. I really hope it's featured on the boxset! Anyone any idea what the hell i'm on about?

5. Cabin Essence (Vocal Sessions)
This one surprised me the most! Were are the sessions for this?

Some of the doyng-doyng backing vox, and other backing vox I believe, were booted a loong time ago.

Yeah. I have all the old boots. But I want it in good quality. I am afraid that the sessions we are going to get with TSS are just track sessions.

That 's the early version of Wind Chimes. Probably take 5. And yeah it's one of the most beautiful pieces of music from the Smile sessions.

Don't know what you mean about not featuring a bass line though.

WIND CHIMES
4. Wind Chimes (Version 1) (8/3/66) (6:46)
Wind Chimes (Version 2) Session (10/5/66)
5. Wind Chimes (Version 2) (5:00)
6. Wind Chimes (Version 2 Tag) (2:51)

It might be just me but I would have preferred less "Good Vibrations" sessions and more core-SMiLE sessions. Or possibly the full Psychedelic (Psycodelic) Sounds conversations. I am only saying this because "Good Vibrations" was complete and we've already gotten stereo sessions with the CD-single. Just a minor grip. AH! I want this in my hands already! (That's what she said.) ::)

Side note: No "Untitled Instrumental"? Has that already been confirmed as a non-SMiLE track?

I respectfully disagree.  As I mentioned around a week ago, GV was a landmark record and deserves canonization.  The issue is that an archival set devoted solely to GV sessions and outtakes probably would not generate that much in terms of sales so you were going to have to include those sessions as either part of "The Pet Sounds Sessions" set (GV was started during PS) or more appropriately "The SMiLE Sessions" set.

"Good Vibrations" along with "Heroes And Villains" is probably the most intricate recording out of all the SMiLE material and therefore deserves a disc onto itself, just as H&V received.  Honestly I think it would be a shame if "Good Vibrations" out of all the tracks was the one to receive the short shaft but to each his own I suppose.

True. If no representation of "Good Vibrations" had come out this set I'd be one throwing stones saying, "Hey! Where's the love for 'Good Vibrations'?"

Right - that's a confirmed non-Smile track. Recent(ish) knowledge. Can't remember exactly when it dates to, but I think it's a Friends-era recording. As is Little Red Book.

Often referred to as the Spanish-flavored bit, it features an acoustic guitar and some other instrument picking a basic melody. PM me if you're still mystified.

Would someone please take the time to find Fishmonk's Smile Box checklist where he highlighted or "redlined" the tracks that have already been released (or the tracks that haven't been released) before? I can't find it right away and would really like a re-post of that.

For the record, Mikie, if you need to find a specific poster's specific post, you can view their profile and select "Show the last posts of this person" at the bottom of the screen under "Additional information". It will bring up everything they've posted, barring anything that might have been lost or deleted.

Anybody noticed the presence of a 5+ min. version of Cabinessence on disc 2 of the 2CD version? It doesn't appear on any disc of the whole box set. What's the deal about that? Does it mean that if we buy the whole set we'll still be missing some (released) songs?

I'm really curious too how the sessions part will be organized. My guess is that it will feature several takes with studio chatter, ending with the "master take" that was eventually used on the album. I hope all the session stuff is in stereo too.

Okay. So no song exclusive to the 2cd version, great news.

But maybe a bonus track on the Japan 1xCD set, as I posted further down:

{Japanese} single CD version has 28 tracks, not 27, with Capitol SMiLE Promo Spot listed as track 28.
The Japanese 2CD and 5CD sets don't list this as a track on Disc 1 so I'm wondering if it's actually a hidden track which will also be on the European and US releases.
If anyone knows, it'd be wonderful to hear.

I haven't done the math to check what the time limits might allow for there and elsewhere.  Going by listings on the various Amazon sites.

My only thought is that there's something buried in there that is only apparent when you backmask the track (or perhaps Brian did an edit like this but later removed the backwards part).  If not that, why else would something like this be relevant?  I can't make sense out of John's cryptic words...

Unless I totally missed the boat and we already knew this, did anybody notice that that link lists the track times for the 7" singles?

- Disc 8 -
1 Heroes and Villains Part One - 3:08
2 Heroes and Villains Part Two - 4:18
- Disc 9 -
1 Vega-Tables - 3:49
2 Surf's Up - 4:12

Heroes Part 1 clearly isn't the 'album mix' according to disc one, and neither Part 1 or 2 match up exactly with the general bootleg assumptions parts 1 and 2, though 1 is close enough to the 3 minute 'alternate mix'. Together they are, however, nearly the exact length of the "sections' on disc 1, and taking into account the inexactitude of timing vinyl, are probably (possibly?) the same thing.

I meant, perhaps it's intended as a conclusion to the whole kit and kaboodle. Just the sound of the tape being wound back, as if to say, at the end of five CDs worth of sessions and such, "Okay, it's in the bag – now everyone into the listening booth to hear the results!"

Hadn't thought of that - makes sense I suppose, although I agree with Iron Horse-Apples that the promo works better if a concluding piece is what they were going for.

You have to keep in mind though that there are some tracks that they surely thought needed to be heard by everyone, and the Capitol promo is probably one of those tracks, so it would have to be on one of the two discs of the 2 CD set. If it closed the entire 5 disc set, many people wouldn't hear it. I think the compilers deemed this one essential enough to go on disc 1.

What's really curious though is that after having read the tracklist over and over for the last month, i still cannot figure out the logic that went into the contents of disc 2. That's an entire disc of extra stuff for those who are not quite interested enough to delve into the entire box set (lunatics!) and so it's most likely the best of the best/essential stuff. But the tracks and sequence are such odd choices for that. This is the set that MOST people will hear, and the compilers presumably want to "wow" people here or use stuff that provides the most insight to the overall project, and there's: dialogue from the Prayer session, the "children were raised section" and prelude to fade of H&V, My Only Sunshine, Vega-Tables fade (even though that is one of my top 5 favorite pieces of Smile, i still find it a curious inclusion), 8 and a half minutes of Fire session (i think that's the longest session represented), and Cool Cool Water version 2? Do these choices make any sense to anyone? It seems that disc 2 for Joe Public could have been compiled a bit "better" whatever that means, but i guess any decisions are very subjective. It is nice though to see them take a more daring and unconventional approach, so cheers for that.

A bit of a late reaction, but I was surprised with the absence of Water Chant as well. But, then I thought of the fact that the track is almost nothing but (backing) vocals. So...maybe it's included (with the organ I hope) in the backing vocals montage!

Yeah, in a mono mix, but all the other tracks' sessions are present as well. So at first it seemed to me there isn't a stereo WC, while there is stereo Holidays, Look etc. But as I said, I think it might be present in stereo in the backing vocals montage.
