Title: New commemorative releases
Post by: Shady on August 30, 2011, 06:56:14 PM
This was also really good news today..

In addition to this release, The Beach Boys and Capitol/EMI will celebrate the band’s 50th Anniversary in 2012.  Plans for commemorative releases and other anniversary activities will be announced.

Possibly new special editions of some classic albums, I doubt it's another greatest hits  :lol

I'm hoping for all the albums released individually in both mono and stereo (new stereo mixes for songs that have no stereo counterpart) with Singles/B-sides with unreleased songs thrown into each cd..and all the brother year cds,not as two fers but individual with singles/b-sides and unreleased songs..

Not to be morbid but I think Brian and Mike are at a place where they realize they're getting old as dirt and now's the time to cash in on this stuff while they can still do promotional work and concerts.  After they're gone their families will be well taken care of but they probably ought to get all the unreleased stuff OUT while they still have a chance to tour and do interviews.  I know 70's not a death sentence but hell you never know.

Or maybe because it's the 50th anniversary

Seriously that is such a cynical look on things

There's still some vault raiding that could be done. I think a solid double-disc set of outtakes from 1967-92 could be assembled. Dennis' early 70s stuff could be a contender. Of course, lots of live tapes.

I would like a best of live tapes (chicago 1965, Hawaii 1967, Michigan 1966) and the full Sacramento 1964 tapes.

No it's not!  They're old.  They can't keep this stuff locked up forever, they need to release it now or they won't see it released.  Period.  That's not cynical.

Well, there's the Carnegie audio/video stuff from (was it) '72 that we already know about.  (I'd have to search back a long way through threads for details but this board is probably the best source of info on that topic).

I'd also bet on a stereo Smiley release.  A Sunflower package.

Personally I hope they release nothing, cos after the SMiLE box I'll probably get thrown out on my arse if I bring any more BBs product into the house!  Which would be a shame cos I'd quite like to be here for the birth of my second kid, due January.

After that though…   :lol

We need a special expanded version of the Surf's Up album!

ALL the missing tracks. ALL live versions available.

Except maybe "Student Demonstration Time."

Dude, a live version of Student Demonstration Time is a showstopper. Carl rocks out on the guitar.

All good and well, John -

but do you really want to go down in history as "bloke starved his two small 'uns, looked like Catweazle, and had accumulated 3 tonnes of Beach Boys records in garden shed" (The Sun)?

I don't know about the rest of you but my 3 tons of Beachboys albums are in a nice dry room inside the house.  Not in a damp garden shed!

And my GROWN children are STILL eating well on my dollar, thank you!

I'm thinking we'll get a double CD called "50 Summers"

Tracklist, something like this:

1. Surfin
2. Surfin Safari
3. Catch A Wave
4. Don't Worry Baby (2001 stereo mix)
5. Surfer Girl
6. Hawaii
7. Kona Coast
8. Keepin An Eye On Summer
9.  .......

and on and on and on.....

How about just a CD single of Wouldn't It Be Nice to Live Again?  If what's being said about this track by those who have heard it is even partly true, it's absurd that it has not been released.

B-sides could be cleaned up versions of the Still I Dream Of It and It's Over Now demos...

I'd really just like to hope that this means we will get "(Wouldn't It Be Nice) To Live Again", the 1974 "California Feelin'", and "Where is She?". These songs all seem SO tantalizing.

I'll bet they do something like that crazy, over the top Beatles one that I think had a copy of all the albums in it.

I HOPE though that they also do a bunch of other stuff, like expanded albums with unreleased tracks, or something cool like a two CD Surf's Up with one whole CD of tracking sessions or something.

I prefer my cake in $20 increments :)

I want the Beach Boys to be the first major band to re-release all their albums as multi-tracks. Each album could come on a DVD, with tracking software for those who don't have it.

Just the tapes, as they are. No effects added.

I just want to see a comp of the best of the material that has yet to be released.  I'm really hoping they don't do another re-release of the original albums putting the never before heard songs on them as bonus tracks.  It's better than nothing, but I already own the albums and they sound great to me.  I don't want to have to re-buy them just to get a couple of songs that I don't have.

Or they could release the original tapes. But since there is only one original for every song, all the BB fans could take turns having our way with the tapes. Once they have been listened to by millions of people, we could return them back to the vault.

I agree that it would be nice and easy if they did a nice compilation of all their best unreleased material. Actually I think it would make sense to add "Do It Again 2011" and maybe one or two more new songs to a nice album's worth of unreleased stuff. That way, Mike Love gets his "new Beach Boys" album and we get some of the long awaited unreleased tracks.

I really just hope they don't just tack one or two unreleased tracks on the end of another hits comp. They should really give us something substantial from the archives for their 50th anniversary (besides that SMiLE thing that's coming out in a few months, of course).

As far as the albums being reissued, well I'm of two minds. First, I honestly do think the albums should all be allowed to stand on their own, instead of being parts of two-fers. I also think that they could add bonus tracks for each release AND still have the albums worth of rarities. But anyways, it remains to be seen what they do.

I'd pretty much guarantee that besides SMiLE, we get another standard hits compilation. Beyond that, who knows what they are planning.

They already tried this, and when it was my turn to borrow the Good Vibrations vocal multis, Look vocals and Surfs Up part 2 they were simply too good, so I kept 'em

Capital refused to pay me the $100000000000000000000000 I asked for recently to return the tapes, but don't worry, my wife is keeping them safe in the shed. They make great pot plant holders.

Instead of re-releasing 15 Big Ones though it should just include the original mix of the album Brian prepared (or did so for at least "Rock & Roll Music")! And maybe even try and make real the whole double album thing, one of new stuff and another of oldies...

I'd like to see a release of the 1975 Chicago and Beach Boys set together.  The Beach Boys could release just their set and with them with Chicago.       I saw them at Oakland Stadium and it was a special treat!    I lke the live stuff so what about a live show from the Summer of 76.  I was also at the Oakland Stadium show and I remember the electricity flowing that early evening show with Brian participating somewhat.

Wishful thinking but let's see what comes out!

Most of the ideas above would be money losers for the record company.  There simply would not be enough people willing to buy those things.

I would think the best bet might be a CD (one) with the best of everything that is not on the standard releases (the two-fers, Pet Sounds and now TSS).  That would mean reusing some tracks from Hawthorne, Endless Harmony, the GV box set, etc., but also releasing a few tracks for the first time.

A collection like that would actually have a chance to sell.  It would appeal both to the hardcore (for the unreleased tracks) and to the fans who are interested enough to buy the regular releases but not things like Hawthorne.

With the success of the PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE reissue, there was talk of doing a Capitol collection of Dennis' Beach Boys' work. I have no idea if that is still on anyone's potential project list, but I doubt it would be something BRI would want for a 50th Anniversary "commemorative release". However, a Dennis collection would be the perfect place for "Wouldn't It Be Nice To Live Again", "Carry Me Home" and other unreleased tracks...and it would be something I could get excited about along with an all-previously unreleased Beach Boys collection or an early 70s live collection.

Nothing against Dennis AT ALL, but I'd prefer that a vault release just took the best stuff, regardless of who wrote it. Therefore, I'd probably say you get a large chunk of Brian material (obviously), but you would also get great Dennis stuff, and maybe a track a piece from Carl, Mike, and Al, if there's even anything unreleased that any of them composed that's worth a crap.

I would really like to hear a bad-ass live album, maybe even that pieces together seperate concerts (I know they've done this before).  I haven't heard much of their rocking 70's live act so a nicely done album that just ROCKS (to blow the perception of the band out of the water!) would be awesome.

Title: Re: New commemorative releases
Post by: Dunderhead on September 02, 2011, 12:33:53 AM
I think just a one or two disc comp could cover everything, as long as they didn't indulge in things like interviews or backing tracks.

I'd like to hear the unreleased tracks that were done for In Concert, maybe the remainder of the tracks from Big Sur that we only have audience recordings for, if those exist from the soundboard.

The '69 to '74 period is pretty much the most fruitful in terms of unreleased material. There doesn't appear to be much from Smiley, Wild Honey, or Friends. Maybe some demos from Friends would be nice if those exist. I'd like to hear California Slide issued, Sound of Free reissued, Wouldn't It Be Nice To Live Again, the early version of Sail on Sailor that Steve Desper is said to have.

Alternate versions or mixes of late 70s material would be nice. The original version of Santa Ana Winds is excellent, and if there are any more like it of MIU, LA, or KTSA I'd like to hear those.

I'd love single disc re-issues of every album through Holland.  Mono/Stereo (With new remixes for Today-Wild Honey) and filled to the brim with bonus tracks.  The bonus tracks should attempt to get out all of the unreleased/unbooted material and ignore the stuff already released.  Examples of things I'd like to hear:

Wich Stand (As well as a ton of unreleased early Brian productions)
Session highlights/backing tracks from the SD Vol. 2 tape recovered a few years ago
Sherry She Needs Me (Highlights from tracking session + backing track)
Wouldn't It Be Nice To Live Again
California Feelin' (Demo)

Wishful thinking: Digital copies of the multitracks of Pet Sounds, Sunflower and Surf's Up.

I've got a couple DVD boots of television performances, live shows, etc. It would be nice if we could have a two disc (blu-ray) DVD retrospective on the band. So many of those 70's performances were videotaped, and it would make a nice compliment to Knebworth and the Nashville disc.

The licensing might be problematic for some of the tv performances, but there's got to be a way to get a nice vid compilation together. Okay make it a four disc set - one for each decade 'till 2000!

A comprehensive DVD boxset would be nice.  All the TV appearances they can find from all over the world, promo films, studio footage, interviews, and some full concerts (or as much footage as possible from each).  That would tell the story of this band better than anything we've seen before.  Many artists are releasing these type of packages and why never have this stuff see the light of day?

If TSS will be a success (and I guess they will be) Capitol could release something like a live album and sell some of them. I mentioned that I'd like to have a two disc set. First disc Beach Boys in Chicago '65 with Brian and second CD a show with Blondie and Ricky. After TSS there will be a demand of Beach Boys products especially among new fans. A live album is always something that people are interested in when they get into new (for them) bands. And my idea would have the early, 100% Beach Boys act plus some of their very best and most beloved era in concert. Maybe a DVD to make it complete.
That's also why a new Beach Boys album should be released.

They shouldn't release too much of the same kind of stuff. They oughta be carefull. Release live stuff, sessions etc. but not a bunch of it

Clear thinking. Well, I guess with the Pet Sounds Sessions and the Smile Sessions, the two pillars of their heyday will have been covered superbly. And TSS will succeed, I have little doubt. And then indeed it's time for something different, people will be interested.

I actually see a 'Love You' boxset coming. It might be a few years, but I'm sure it'll happen.

Won't ever happen. And btw what would you put onto such a box ? There's not enough material

I would just throw in Adult Child and the various outtakes we're aware of from 1976-78. Obviously that stretches out to before and after Love You but then.. so does The Smile Sessions box set. :lol At best though, I guess that'd be about two discs worth of material though? Oh well, so a nicely expanded edition at least.

We'll see, but there is definitely enough demos and alternate versions for a deluxe edition at least.

Backing tracks, all the outtakes from 76-77, demo versions, all of Adult/Child...

Special edition comes with a blue bathrobe, 4 packs of Marlboro and an audio software program emulating a vintage 70s-era Moog synth.

I really want a Love You album cover quilt. I think Dean (or is it Jan?) has one behind him in the Endless Harmony documentary and I was super jealous! I was also thinking how cool it would be -- not to mention entirely appropriate -- to make the cover out of icing for a (large and elaborate) cake! Clearly I need to get married sometime soon, haha.

Chuck in a disc of the set the BBs played for industry suits in ( I think ) London around that time  - bootlegged as a 2LP gatefold, black rimmed cover... was it for CBS? Upset a lot of fans cos a scheduled gig was cancelled to make way for it, if I recall…

Make it a deluxe box!

What I hope we don't see:
  • yet another greatest hits compilation with one or two new stereo remixes
  • a single or double disc of live rarities spread across decades
  • a single or double disc of studio outtakes spread across decades

What I'm getting at is this: I really hope they don't take a limited, piecemeal approach to this. If they're going to open up the vaults, why not open them all the way? Pick a single project or era, focus on it, and do it comprehensively and right (just like they've done, incidentally, with TSS). As much as I love the Endless Harmony and Hawthorne, CA collections, they tantalize me every time I hear them because I end up fantasizing about what has been left out. It's like backpacking across Europe in 2 days. You barely have time to catch your breath, and after a whirlwind tour of barely-glimpsed wonders, you're left feeling like Brian: all that stands out is the bread.

So count me as yet another vote for deluxe editions of individual albums. They would contain mono/stereo, instrumentals, vocals only, outtakes, session highlights, that sort of thing. That is what I would most like to see. It would be cool if they could take their time with it, do a few next year, a few the year after that, etc. Do it lovingly.

Other than the traditional albums, I would also love to see a pre-Capitol collection that includes the Wollensack tapes, the Hite Morgan sessions, the Gary Usher sessions, etc. And possibly a few stand-alone collections that focus on certain, more prolific eras (such as 1969-1970 and 1976-1977) and the unreleased album masters associated with those eras.

And of course there's live stuff – the Chicago 1965 concert(s?), Lei’d In Hawaii, Beachago, etc. My main wish for that stuff is not to see bits and bobs shoved into a “best of” live compilation – instead, release a single, comprehensive performance (or series of related performances).

(Now I’m well aware I’m speaking as a fan. I want it all, regardless of how marketable it might be for Capitol. I’m talking ideal scenarios here. For the eras that traditionally don’t sell as well – anything after 1966 basically – maybe Capitol could get creative and do some download-only releases.)

They should do SURFER GIRL first then.  Almost perfect album, and it would be completely different than the box sets (pet sounds, tss) that they've done recently.  Extra disc with all kinds of relevant stuff.  Mike would love it, too.

We need little accessories such as a  minature moog synth, dressing gown, Mini jukebox that plays Be My Baby, piano sandbox and  Banana and Louie figures for Brian, also can these dolls be part of an ongoing series? Like we could have present day Brian sitting behind a keyboard and early 60's skinny Brian. Also don't forget about dolls of Van Dyke Parks, Ed Carter, Full House era- John Stamos, Jeff Foskett, and Murry Wilson. Murry should have a his own special doll in which you pull a string on the back and he says phrases:

Murry Wilson:
"I'm A Genius, Too!", "What's the matter, you guys made too much money?", "Loosen up a little", "You're too tense", "Soft and sexy", "Syncopate it a little",
"OK fellas, you got any guts?", "I'm sorry to yell", "Let's fight for success".

That would be one helluva box set...think about all the songs/singles around that time, let alone material that didn't make it to the final cut....I honestly think 20/20 coulda been a 2-LP set...it's an Odds and Sods type of record, needed a couple of Friends' outtakes (We're Together Again, Time to Live in Dreams), an instrumental or two (Moni Kani or Leaves of Grass), and a couple more oddball, non-thematic related to rest of album tunes (Old Man River, Walk On By (yes just the snippet), Loop De Loop, etc) and BOOM, you gotta second disc that stands as tall as the first LP.

Carl with I Can Hear Music...Bruce with Nearest Faraway Place and Bluebirds all over the Mountain...Dennis with All I Want To Do, Be With Me, Moni Kani, Never Learn Not To Love, Time to Live in Dreams, Celebrate the News)...be nice to have some Alan J lead sessions for Cotton Fields and Loop De Loop...Sessions with Murry: Breakaway and Won't You Tell Me...and of course with Brian: Cotton Fields, Do it Again, I Went to Sleep, Time to Get Alone, Old Man River, We're Together Again, etc.
