Title: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Aegir on March 08, 2006, 06:20:45 PM I came across a series of recordings listed as "1967 rehearasals"; here are the tracks:
God Only Knows California Girls Surfer Girl You're So Good To Me The Letter Help Me Rhonda Heroes & Villains Their Hearts Were Full of Spring are these the songs that were recorded for Lei'd In Hawaii? Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Jonas on March 08, 2006, 06:22:04 PM they recorded all the rehersals? are the same as the God Only Knows rehersal on the Endless Harmony soundtrack?
I love the quality of it and how they sound, Id love to get more of em! :hat Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Aegir on March 08, 2006, 06:31:32 PM I'm pretty sure. All the tracks I've heard so far are just vocals, organ/keyboard and drums (besides their Hearts Were Full of Spring, obviously).
Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Don't Back Down on March 08, 2006, 06:57:12 PM Yeah, the rehearsals are good. Especially enjoy the "California Girls" rehearsal, and they switched the lyric in "Help Me Rhonda" to "Help You Rhonda". "The Letter" on "Rarities" is from the rehearsal.
Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Jonas on March 08, 2006, 06:59:38 PM I'd love to get the whole set, I listened to the live concert...the quality isnt as good :/

I love the quality of it and how they sound, Id love to get more of em! :hat Same here. Surfer Girl is on the Good Vibrations box, and Good Vibrations is on the Hawthorne set (I think that's a rehearsal one). Heroes and Villains (Live) is on the Concert twofer... Post by: punkinhead on March 09, 2006, 07:34:14 AM the version of Surfer Girl on the GV box is the best ive ever heard it performed...i love the new ending that brian left on for live at the roxy
Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: SMiLEY on March 09, 2006, 09:50:06 AM Just for frame of reference --
The "rehearsals" were recorded *after* the concerts. It seems the live recordings were deemed unusable. The 'rehearsals' have a veryl Smiley Smile feel to them. Post by: Rocker on March 09, 2006, 10:06:44 AM There were also real rehearsals before the Hawaii-shows. "Good vibrations" on Hawthorne,CA and "Their hearts were full of spring" are from that rehearsal
Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Jonas on March 09, 2006, 10:11:26 AM a littel birdie told me mike love talks over the H&V reherals...annoying at that
whats up with that? does he have to sabotage EVERYTHING? Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Rocker on March 09, 2006, 10:17:49 AM whats up with that? does he have to sabotage EVERYTHING? It's been said that Brian directed and wrote that speech. BTW I think H&V sounds fantastic in that version (except the comments) Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Aegir on March 09, 2006, 11:26:29 AM Hahaha, I love Mike's talking over Heroes and Villains. It's amazing.
Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Jonas on March 09, 2006, 01:42:33 PM I think the music sounds great but I cant get over Mike's talking...that guy needs a mute button.

There exists a tape where you can hear Brian giving Mike directions for that speech, but I never herad it. Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Mitchell on March 09, 2006, 05:04:58 PM Don't forget that Brian himself is sabotaging the song with his singing about oral sex (I think).
Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: punkinhead on March 09, 2006, 08:57:10 PM how's that?
Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Mitchell on March 09, 2006, 10:01:57 PM I'll have to listen to it again to know what I'm talking about, and I'm not going to do that now. Maybe someone else can, or else I'll see if I can find it later.
Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Chris Brown on March 10, 2006, 12:13:57 AM I'd be curious about that too Mitchell, I think I hear Brian singing something that's not in the actual song towards the end but I couldn't ever understand what it was. I'm talking about the end of the last H&V chorus...whenever you get around to it I'd love to know more about this!
Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Mitchell on March 10, 2006, 05:24:40 AM Yeah, it's at the end. I think Cam Mott knows what he says.
Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Surfer Joe on March 10, 2006, 12:37:02 PM Right at the end, while Mike is thanking you for coming to the show, during the "Bicycle Rider" fade-out, Brian seems to sing something ad-libbed. All I can get for sure is "...been eatin..."

Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Reverend Joshua Sloane on March 11, 2006, 09:22:22 AM i love that marilyn rovell ... she's hot Was and is. It's very believable that Brian wrote that scripted part for Mike to say. A few reasons might supply a definate answer. - Heroes and Villains was worked on more than Good Vibrations. It was hoped by all to be bigger, better, and shoot them into even higher fame and glory than ever. - As the SMiLE album died out and became Smiley Smile the song was re-recorded somewhat. It then lost all sense of dynamacism that it once had. And it once did with such grace and glory. It was a bumbling trek through all that is cool in the world. - Brian held onto the final version of the song for ages. He thought it was going to be some huge hit when infact it wasn't. It was cool, but it was no Good Vibrations and people already gained their doubts. So to mock all of his work in a sick attempt to re-motivate himself and get back on track with music, he scripts out the thing for Mike Love to say. It's every thought Brian has about the song, now looking at it as a fan and not himself deep within the song and its recording. It's something i'm prone to doing all the time. I'll look back on myself and remark on how "stupid" certain things were. Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Rerun on March 11, 2006, 09:47:31 AM That California Girls is pretty cool...just a completely different vibe than what it turned into. Especially the outro.
Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Reverend Joshua Sloane on March 11, 2006, 03:19:10 PM Are the live performances any more animated in any way?
................................... In the Badman book, there's a review of the show which details Brian Wilson's new "organ playing talent". I always wondered about this since, well, Brian was always a great keyboard player being it his main instrument. Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Surfer Joe on March 11, 2006, 03:50:27 PM It's very believable that Brian wrote that scripted part for Mike to say. I've learned that nothing is too bizarre to rule out in the land of Brian Wilson. But the first thing I would need to believe that Mike was scripted is any scrap of direct evidence to that effect. Also, compare that track to "Cassius Love Vs. Sonny Wilson" and see if it still sounds like Mike's reading a script. Maybe he'd spent the intervening years studying The Method with Stanislavsky. Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Cam Mott on March 11, 2006, 07:10:05 PM Joe, I doubt there is direct evidence that either Brian or Mike "wrote" it. As I remember there is aural evidence that Brian tells Mike one take of the H&V spoof is "great" and another take "cracked him up" plus there is Brian doing his own afore-mentioned naughty spoof of the lyrics. I suppose that at the at least two takes says something about the scriptedness or candidness or something.
Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Surfer Joe on March 11, 2006, 08:57:32 PM Without any evidence of truth, it has to go into the category of unsupported theory. I'd certainly like to hear the additional audio (are other takes available?). I have to say, I can't imagine how Brian's piss take on the lyrics at the very end of the blown take are any evidence whatsoever that Mike's previous comments are scripted by Brian, or how that has any bearing. Again, I'm not ruling it out; just waiting for the supporting data...
Title: Re: are these the Lei'd in Hawaii things? Post by: Joshilyn Hoisington on March 12, 2006, 10:26:12 AM Didn't noted Beach Boys historian Peter Reum confirm that it was scripted by Brian? Brian told him so, or I don't remember. It seemed like pretty solid evidence, if I remember correctly.

I constructed a Lei'd in Hawaii playlist from what we have so far, it's only 8 tracks (obviously) and an intro to "Surfin'" I think is hilarious. It goes nicely as a bonus EP to Smiley Smile.
