Talking with a mutual friend when the album was first announced, we made our preferred tracklists, and one of my wants was for "Wish..." with the "Surfer Girl" middle-eight: if that happens, you know who to thank.  ;D

My #1 preferred track was "Little April Showers". Oh well... ITKOD Vol 2, anyone ?

Apparently you can't have a modern day Brian record without an overload of bass harmonica!

I can't get any clear answers either on whether this is at Brian's insistence or the Mertens / Foskett band attempt at recreating the classic mid60s BW sound. Not just the bass harmonica but the whole attempt at getting his old sound. Brian was progressing and evolving up until he started with his current band. Then it got stale.

If they're going to copy Brian's old sound they might as well get some Moogs in there.

That's not Brian's fault though.  He's just a sweet guy and can't say "no".  I mean hell, you hire a bass harmonica player, and you never hear the end of it.

"Brian! Brian! Can I play???? Brian are you going to let me play????"

"Yes Pete, you can play the f&*cking harmonica.  Again.  "

More accurately, Brian was not writing, recording or appearing regularly until he started with his current band. That throwback sound was arrived at because it's what he responds to -- Darian has been extremely specific on this point.

Exactly, I don't understand the criticism levied at the band so often.  The only reason Brian's even touring is because of that band.  His music is timeless, he's going to record his music until he dies with that same sound.  The stuff on "Imagination", and other albums with the more 'contemporary' sound are dated and will die with Brian.  The 'wrecking crew' sound he uses now, and used back in the day, will live on and on.

Kind of an odd choice to preview the album off; I didn't even hear Brian on this track.

Funnily enough I just watched this very clip about two minutes ago.  ;D I typed in "loudly the bell in the old tower rings" to try to identify the song in that Mickey cartoon, and that clip came up.

It would be interesting if Brian ever tried some symphonic/operatic styled music.

I certainly hear Brian but he adeptly uses the Wondermints in the same fashion he used to use the Beach Boys.  It's really genius - such a different take of the song.  Course, I like crazy stuff.

God please, no more Disney after this one.  I've already stated my preference for ending the cover albums in another thread, but if this trend were to continue I'd at least like to hear him tackle something more interesting.  Where's Brian Wilson Reimagines Ennio Morricone when you need it?  Yeah, I know there's zero chance of that happening but his take on Regan's Theme from Exorcist 2 would be epic.  Ok, I'll shut up now.

There are some things I would have imagined Brian wanting to do a lot more than some of the more recent things.
I wonder who's suggestion some of those were?

Stay Awake was on my wishlist - but - ugh.
Not even Pink Elephants on Parade? Even friggin' Alice in Wonderland had some good tunes.

But then, I'm a Disney purist - my house is full of animation art.
We know or knew a lot of the original animators for WB and Disney (and their families).
I guess that's what happens when you have expectations - Gershwin was less of a letdown by far.

They're Randy Newman songs. Brian loves Randy, and has for decades.

He also loves Elton John, so there's two "Lion King" songs.

Not that complicated, and I'd expect these were actually his suggestions.

I know they're Randy Newman and Elton compositions - but I was hoping since Norbit was Brian's favorite movie, maybe he hadn't seen any Pixar or Lion King. :-D
I'm also aware that they need to play for more than just us curmudgeons, and while I consider Toy Story new, a lot of folks here grew up with TS and LK.
It just seems a bit heavy handed to pull that much from those films with so many decades of material available. I guess I was imagining Brian doing stuff from films (or even Disneyland shows/rides) he loved as a kid.

They've said from the beginning that it was Disney's. BW asked to do a Gershwin project first, and then he'd do the Disney record. So now he is.

I kind of wished Rubin would`ve gone the Wilson/Spector "big" production route with Diamond.

Brian keeps saying (in several interviews) that he hates Johnny Cash's voice, so I'd bet you couldn't pay him enough money to cover Cash. 

Considering that Brian seems to have heard Jack Reilly on Tree and thought "THAT'S what I should sound like!" and worked hard on the cocaine & cigarettes for another decade to get there... I don't think a Johnny Cash cover would be too strange.

I love Jack's vocal on Tree...although I love the tag vocals more :3d

I always wondered what The Beach Boys would do with "How Quick They Forget" the unreleased barbershop quartet number Howard Ashman wrote for "Aladdin".  I bet they would've knocked that one out of the park back when they were all in fine voices.

Personally, I think his music has gotten better since he has had this band. TLOS is a great album! I know BWRG and this one are cover songs, but I love the production. Besides, most 70 year old men don't even approach what Brian is doing these days.

I think Brian's music since Smile 2004 has improved immensely as well. That experience was a catharsis for him.

Wirestone, thank you for that... now, next question.  In your vast knowledge of all things Beach Boy, wouldn't you say that's what Brian's involvement usually was?  :)

It's sad you have to point that out to people, I think people miss the amount of work it takes to sing well; arrange well, and produce well.  Brian did all three on this song and gets crap for it. 

The reason I asked is that I think it's generally agreed—maybe I'm wrong about this, and I'm sure some gentle  :-D soul here will correct me if I am—that on his recent records probably starting with the Paley Daze, Brian's primary contribution, other than lead vocals, is the vocal arrangement. Not so much the track arrangements.
So, with the "Hi-Ho" preview having no lead vocals, and hardly any BG vocals, um, what exactly do we think he did here other than a teensy bit of vocal arranging?

Brian has contributed to the track arrangements of all his solo records with the probable exception of IJWMFTT. (And OCA, obviously.)

Imagination was largely tracked by Joe Thomas, but Brian produced some of the basic tracks and suggested some overdubs and played some keys.

GIOMH and Smile were each based on large bodies of pre-existing work, so the arrangements were largely pre-determined. However, Brian did play on and produce the studio sessions.

Brian arranged most of the demos for TLOS, which were used as the basis for all of that album's arrangements. Again, he also produced and played on the final studio sessions.

He directly arranged and produced the XMas album and the BWPS sessions.

So his involvement in instrumental arranging does change, depending on the project. But he's been reasonably involved in it for most of his solo career, particularly with the last few records.

Oddity? If he had done this during "Smile", it be a legendary track that we'd all have been clamoring for the last 40 years.

I love, love, love the 'surf ballad' section of RG. It's so lush, wistful, contented yet longing... gorgeous stuff.

There's no checklist, you know.  He won a Grammy for "Ms. O'Leary's Cow" which is similar in scope (no lead, only some bg vocals, mostly instrumental), and it's the only grammy he ever won.
