Yeah, it is a good idea.  Brian didn't sing any of that stuff originally, either, so why not?  I mean, "Don't Worry Baby" ?  Yeah, keep Brian singing that because that's his song, but hell if he didn't do the vocal originally, you might as well have somebody else in the band give it a shot.  I always liked Brian singing backup anyways.  Even on some of the early stuff you can hear him sticking out like a sore thumb in some of the harmonies.  He was always a little more into it than everybody else, lol. 

I think it's cool if somebody else sings a song or two, but what does that say about where Brian is at mentally/psychologically? He seems to be taking more and more of a backseat. Hmmm.

No different than any beach boys concert he ever played in.  He never sang all the leads; why should he now?  That's not his forte. 

Shady, you titled this thread "Brian's Set Lists Are Getting Really Great".  How are they "getting" great? Are there songs on the current setlists that he hasn't done live before? It's not much different than the last year or two or three, is it? I see where at some gigs he's done a few songs off the Gershwin album (4-6), but other than that, what's so great about the "new" set?

It's cool that you're looking forward to the upcoming concert though, but have you seen a Brian Wilson concert before? Just wonderin'.  :)

Brian's shows are getting a bit more Greatest Hits-y but that's fine by me, just seeing the man is worth the price of entry to me.

Which show/s are you attending, Shady? I'm seeing Brian in September too, it'll be my first Brian concert :)

Same thought struck me -  this is the guy who's setlists have included the entire Pet Sounds album, the entire Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE album, and the entire That Lucky Old Sun album.

Not sure how that repertoire can be much improved upon, by any band in this corner of the Milky Way, unless we can transport the original BBs here from 1974 and get them to perform those same set lists, only with more Holland, CATP, Sunflower, Surf's Up, Friends, Wild Honey and 20/20 stuff thrown into the first half of the set and the encore.

I should have said "more interesting" or something. I just like how the band are taking more of a front seat in terms of getting lead vocals etc

Today, and in recent years, Brian is actually more suited to sing the songs  and parts he DIDN'T sing with the Beach Boys because many of them are less difficult than the ones he originally sang. He covers Mike's stuff okay because the range is limited, but he can't really sing the upper end of the more ambitious Brian parts with any real accuracy, that's best left to others in the band who do a great job of masking his limitations.

Sad thing is, Brian's getting older. I wish he could drop two Smile tunes at the start of the set nowadays, but yeah. The BB's aren't exactly easy to sing if you haven't quite got the chops like BW...

Awesome set list but most of the songs, except the last three, I just don't associate with Brian:

'Sail On Sailor' - Brian co-wrote but I thought that Carl produced and arranged. Does Brian even appear on the recording?  I associate this with Carl.

'California Saga' - not written by Brian although he does make a vocal appearance.  I associate this with Al.

'We Got Love' - Didn't write it - did he participate in the recording?  I associate this with Blondie and Ricky.

'Trader' - Didn't write it - did he participate in the recording?  I associate this with Carl.

'All This is That': To me this is the best track cut by the band that had no Brian involvement.

'I Can Hear Music' - Carl's first production.

'Feel Flows' - This is pretty much a Carl solo track.  Are there any Beach Boys on this besides Carl?

Completely agree, Bill.  I saw the Beach Boys do all those songs in 1974 - just using these as examples to respond to John's post.
Saw Blondie, Carl, Billy, and Bobby sing Sail On Sailor, Carl do Funky Pretty, Carl do Marcella, Mike and Al do California Saga, Ricky do We Got Love, Carl do Trader, Carl & Al do All This Is That, Carl do Long Promised Road, Carl do I Can Hear Music, Carl do Feel Flows, Al, Carl, and Mike do Heroes & Villains, and I forgot who did the other two. It's definitely within the scope of Brian and his band to do ALL of the aforementioned songs. I've seen Brian's band do a helluva job on 5 or 6 of those songs live - Sail On Sailor, Marcella, I'm Waiting For The Day, Don't Talk, and Heroes & Villains, and after seeing Darian sing Darlin', he'd (along with Jeff & Scott) have no problem at all singing the others.

I'd like to point out something quite significant about Brian's sets that is usually swept under the rug and forced out of the collective fan mind, as though the thought were too unbearable to consider in its fullest implications.

It is Jeffrey Foskett's lifelong hatred of Love You that is the reason for the total absence of that album's songs in Brian's sets over the past however many years he's been touring as a solo artist. I hear those synths that creep up still in Brian's music- and I generally don't believe Brian produces the music or arranges it anymore- so someone in Brian's band is doing them, which means they most likely enjoy Love You and would dig adding songs to the set. But designated driver camp counselor pastor Jeff Foskett doesn't dig it.

Jeff: Mona? But that's from Love You!
Darian: I know it's a great song we should really play it, Brian would love it!
Jeff: But I hate Love You, didn't you get the email?

but they've played The Night Was So Young. Jeff was diggin it.
