Title: Dennis and Karen- Wedding Pics
Post by: bgas on July 30, 2011, 06:42:48 AM
Some guy bought a storage room that had Dennis' Wedding album included; and now they're for sale!

What an incredible find, seriously collectable for BB/DW historians, should be on display in a BB's museum....hang on, there's a thought - a Beach Boys museum/exhibition ?

It's interesting that Audree is in these photos, but not Brian or Carl...

What a find ! Hope the right person gets this.

And I agree that we need a Beach Boys exhibition or something like that. Maybe online as part of beachboyscentral.com ?

oh well.....

BUT....   That's what we're doing in Beach Boys media....
All we need is more contributors, showing all of their "stuff"

Stebbins and I discussed the wedding a while ago, it's hilarious because Dennis and Karen fought the whole time and during such a "peaceful" ceremony. I was curious if Brian showed up, and he wasn't sure: his lack of prescense in the pcitures seemes to indicate the prognosis as negative.

So, anyone willing to throw down the $500?

This is obviously from their first wedding, on the Fern Grotto River in Kauai, Hawaii in May 1976.  Which explains the floral leighs everyone is wearing!  :)  I remember seeing the "champaign" photo before...one of the tabloids ran it with a story after he died (in the article, Karen told how he'd come to see her days before his drowning, promising he was going to clean up his act & stating he wanted to marry her again...for the third time).

I find this kind of sad. This album was in Karen's possession at the time I was writing my DW book in '99. I spent some time with her at her apartment and she let me go through all of her boxes of photos, and this album was among what she had. It seemed a bit weathered for a "wedding" album. Usually those things are pristine, but this one looked like it'd been bumped around a bit, maybe had some drinks spilled on it etc... It was kind of wedged at the bottom of a box of misc. stuff that was randomly thrown together. Karen's life was a bit of a shambles at that time, but she was extremely helpful and supportive of my efforts to write about Dennis. As C-man said its from their first wedding in Hawaii, and as TdHabib related they apparently fought the whole way down the river in the boat that took them to the ceremony. As I recall Audree was the only Wilson there. I think it was a very small ceremony, maybe 10 people or so. Between '99 and Karen's death in '01 she moved a few times, and was staying with a former show business associate for a while. I think she had her own apt. again when she died. I talked to her regularly After the book came out she wrote me probably the nicest complimentary note that I got from anyone. Her sister called me when she died. it was kind of a shock and kind of not...sound familiar? The sister, I think her name is Christine, was gathering Karen's stuff, I would have assumed she'd have taken possession of this wedding album, but maybe Karen lost it in those between years, or maybe there were two.

OR maybe the "former show business associate" she stayed with, somehow latched onto the album?

BTW...I've told this a million times...but when I first went to Karen's apartment in '99 i was struck by how minimal it was.  She had quite a colorful life, with a lot of notable show biz friends, but her apartment showed little trace of that life. I mean Daisy Duke gave the eulogy at her memorial. Karen had photos stuffed in boxes of herself dining with Groucho Marx, hanging with Jack Nicholson, Paul McCartney...all kinds of that type of stuff. But the ONLY photo she had on her wall was of her and Dennis curled up and napping in a sail on the Harmony. This photo was taken by Ed Roach in about '77 or so, and it was the one that meant the most to her. The only one she had framed and displayed. She told me that was the happiest moment of her life.

You know, I just noticed the link and I thought "how cool to watch all these pictures". But hearing the "inside stories" from Jon, it makes me kinda sad...

I agree, it is somehow sad; But how cool it is that Jon got to meet and spend time with her.
Wish I had.

I like to remember those happier times. I have told this story before.  I was working for the promoter of The Beach Boys and Chicago concert at Arrowhead Stadium that year and was lucky enough to spend time with Dennis and Karen in the locker rooms area before the show. We were eating tostados and chatting about the weather. There were 65,000 people there on a beautiful but hot Summer afternoon. The Beach Boys were to take the stage about 5pm. As they walked down the long tunnel to get on the field, Dennis had a hand in Karen's back pocket and she had her's in his. They were so happy. I was so lucky.

You know, I have no idea why this popped into my head, but I'm wondering if Christine McVie has a picture of Dennis on her wall? I still can't believe no one's really interviewed her about Dennis (or, rather, that she has never talked about him, I know she finds it painful), as you had the drummer for America's band and one of the lead singers for one of the biggest groups of the 70s together for several years.

But Karen Lamm lived a hell of a life, each time I read more about her I learn something really interesting.

Always sad when personal stuff like this ends up on eBay.

Hopefully it's at least somebody hard up and not just some sleaze merchant trying to make a quick several hundred bucks.

I'd buy it & give it to someone in Brian's posse so it stays with the family when I see him next month but I don't have that kind of money.

I wish someone from one of the families could get it.  I hate seeing something like that go on sale on ebay.   It's like going into antique stores and finding family pictures and other artifacts on sale.

^agreed. I hate seeing that kind of thing.

I hope Stack-o-tracks idea is correct and this person is hard off for cash...otherwise, not a cool thing to do.

I mean, selling vintage BB merchandise is one thing, but selling something this personal is kinda sad.

Yeah, I suppose. But the person selling this is probably not hard for cash; they simply lucked onto something of value( hopefully, in their eyes)
Who should they have contacted/ how would they get to them? Dennis and Karen are obviously gone, how would they easily find their heirs?
Personal things are sold all the time; usually they just aren't from people so well known/loved, without the approval of their family( or someone appointed by them)

Family pictures in antique stores are generally there because no one in the family cared enough to keep them.

It's Dennis Wilson - with a 15 minute google search it would possibly be easy to find at least one of Dennis' children. Idk, I see your point but it still seems wrong to me.

I see your point(s); I simply don't think most people look at it in the same light. If I were to have found the album (and I wasn't the huge fan I am) I too would probably have thought it was cool to find something I might make a nice profit on.

Have to say: it's nice to see that the pictures were purchased by someone with the right connections to Dennis/the BBs
