Title: Bachman-Turner-Beach Boys
Post by: Mark Dillon on July 28, 2011, 08:01:13 AM
Hi everyone. I'm wondering if the experts out there can help. For my book 50 Sides of The Beach Boys, I have spoken to Randy Bachman, who played many shows with the group as a member of the Guess Who, BTO and Ironhorse. I’m having a hard time with dates, however. He has memories of Eugene Landy traveling with Brian. He recalls it being on the tour with Ironhorse in 1979, but obviously Landy wasn’t around then. So it must've been either 1976 or 1983 and beyond. Does anybody know of Bachman opening for the boys in either of those two time frames?
Second point. He recalls being the opening act when there was a dustup between Mike and Dennis at the Greek Theater. That's in keeping with events we've heard about from July 17, 1981. But according to Eric A's great site, Iron Horse opened for the Boys at the Greek on June 23, 1979. Is it possible that venue repeatedly brought out the fisticuffs between those two guys? I'm wondering if anyone can confirm if Bachman was on that bill in 1981 as well.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

An additional question: who ran (as in managed) Iron Horse?

BTW, the 1979 gigs were at the Greek in Berkley (UC) while the 1981 shows were at the Greek in Hollywood.

Thanks for pointing that out, Andrew. Bachman definitely said it was at the Greek Theater in LA. So then I need to confirm that he was on that 1981 bill, if anyone knows. He also refers to an onstage incident between Dennis and Mike leading to whatever backstage fracas is said to have occurred. But there were no doubt plenty of those.
