Title: Black Widow...
Post by: Mahalo on July 23, 2011, 02:54:42 AM
Anyone like this song as much as me? Brian really sings his heart out and plays that plodding piano wth authority. He wrote this with Gray Usher, right? Right before his solo album in 88? Or am I wrong...just something cool and different to converse about rather than the same old-same old. "...can't take it NO More! the little things, that mean so much, to me."  :rock

I love the song Black Widow. I like the fact that it's kind of daft but turns into something somewhat more intense - a classic BW shape shifter.

I wonder if this got vetoed by Landy.

It was re-written - as "Let's Do It Again" - and was on the original Brian Wilson master*, only to be pulled at the last moment. Credits are, or were, Wilson/Landy. The original lyric, as printed in The Wilson Project is inept to the point of hysteria.

[* OK, I know, there wasn't one final, single master tape... but it was part of the original album as submitted to Reprise]

Any possibility that you could list some of the lyrics?

My mistake - they're in Tape #10... and remember, you asked.  ;D

Don't look now there's a black widow on the wall
Don't start screaming I'll hit it and I'll make it fall
The big black widow is a chick that will not move
Look at how slow that ugly girl tries to groove
You say to yourself she's just a little spider
Tell the lady to leave or I might just bite her

People remember this moment the next time you jump up to bash Mike's lyrics.

So ridiculous it turns back around and becomes cool again!

I actually prefer it to the remake, personally.

I like Brian's 1983 demo of the tune. Allegedly there's a pre-Let's Do It Again recording of Black Widow from '86, presumably with the quoted lyrics.

I remember the demo went like -

Don't look now but there's a black widow on the wall
I think I'll get something, I'll crack it and make it fall
I've got you in my heart every night and day
I'm saying my prayers that we're all gonna find a way

I've always really liked Black Widow and Do It Again. Good melody, and I do like some of the lyrics. Funny and dark at the same time. I think not only Brian and Landy had a hand in these songs, but Gary Usher too, didn't he?

Don't look now but there's a black widow on the wall
I think I'll get something and I'll crack it and make it fall
I've got you in my heart every night and day
I'm saying my prayers that we're gonna find a way, it's easy now
I go through this every day, some bummers you can take away
The light was shining bright as ever, and that was happening years ago
Can't take it no more, can't take it no more
Those little things that mean so much to me
Keep your eyes on the road when you drive your car
It don't matter short distance, long distance driving so far
Hey now man just a little hug now and then
And watching little baby as he plays around in his pen, it's easy now
Now black & white can burn it on, until that goshdarn pain is gone
Frank Sinatra sings his songs, that's why things just can't go on
Can't take it no more, can't take it no more
The little things, that mean so much to me

Don't look now but the handwriting's on the wall
You can run, you can hide, but it won't do no good at all
I've got you in my heart every night and day
I'm saying my prayers that we're all gonna find a way, it's better now
When love's got an eye on you, then love's gonna see you through
We couldn't find it for some time, but now I see it in your eye
Let's do it again, let's do it again
The little things that mean so much to me
Can't be scared of the world that might someday be
Gotta love somebody knowing love's gonna keep us free
You touch my heart and my fears just melt away
You hold my hand and it's easier today, it's better now
When love's got an eye on you, there's something that you gotta do
You probably want to go away, it's easier to stand and say
Let's do it again, let's do it again
The little things that mean so much to me
Let's do it, let's do it again
Let's do it, let's do it again

Thanx for the those lyrics, Mikie. I don't think I've heard Let's Do It Again, but I probably have. After accumulating so much music it takes time to filter through everything.

I really like the small drum machine intro...it sets a groove that subtly settles into the pocket and gives root for Brian and piano to rock with that awesome melody.

Recently I was going through a bunch of Bull-merda; having to deal with difficulties I could've done without. Well as I was going through it I would have the opening line to Black Widow in my brain. Brian really captures a great feel with this song.

Yikes. All of those lyrics are utter gibberish...
