Title: You know you're a die hard Beach Boys fan when you have__on yr mega BB playlist.
Post by: aerolls on July 17, 2011, 05:28:57 PM
Hello my name is Adrian and this my first thread post. :)

I've been on this Beach Boys resurrection for the past year. Smile is my favorite album, Purple Chick version. Wonderful,, Surf's Up and Till I Die are my new favorite songs. I also love Dennis songs, solo(Carry Me Home, Rainbows, California Slide, Wild Situation my fave's; and even Carl, Al's and Mike's obscure album classics like Free Flow, Cottonfields and We Got Love.

Since I'm a relative Beach Boy die hard in training, I need some help from the Smiley Smile Beach Boy(s) experts. I am compling a mega Beach Boys playlist from post Good Vibrations through 80's. Rare trax, outtakes, demos and die hard song selections. So far I have Johnny Carson, Brian's Back, We Got Love, Back Home (1970), I even have the Carl produced version of The Flame's Don't Worry Bill plus Wonder-Bill... among others.

Here's my question:  I'm curious to know what I'm missing. Right now I have 98 songs. I would love to hit the century mark. How about some help? I need some ideas for Beach Boy gems for my ever expanding playlist.

Actually, in lieu of a question,  I need you to fill in this blanks.

You know you're a die hard Beach Boys fan when you have________on yr mega BB playlist.

Thank You, everyone

right now I'm listening to She's Bald from Smiley Smile. And yes I have a majority of Smile cuts from both Purple Chick and Mok's versions.

The original version of Al's Santa Ana Winds is one of the best BB tracks period.

If you don't have anything from Friends I'd go back and listen to that album too, it's one of Brian's best.

Man you guys know what I like. I actually love all of those late 60's mid 70's albums. Wild Honey, Surf's Up, 20/20, Sunflower, Friends all have songs on my list.

Any rare trax or outtakes from these sessions you can recommend?

... makes me wonder what your list contains right now.

But - assuming you don't know these or have them on your list - may I recommend this random list of BB (related) tracks?

- Are You Real?  (DW)
- My Solution
- Big Sur (early version)
- Loop De Loop
- Chasin' The Sky
- Country Pie (Celebration)
- River Song (DW version, early BB studio attempt, BB live version)
- You're Still A Mystery
- Susie Cincinnati

... and I could go on and on and on ...

Oh wow, I think this might be the song I've been searching for for!! A friend did me a mix tape years ago and a portion of it was set aside for Beach Boys rarities. There was a particularly great song on there about winds and so on. Then I lost the tape. I figured it was Santa Ana Winds but the album version didn't sound right so I assumed I'd got it wrong and never searched any further. Don't suppose any kind soul could give me a heads up as to where I might find this one?!!

As for my input to the OP's Beach Boys mix, I recently discovered a backing track version of We're Together Again that I'd never heard before. It's much more country with slide and everything. Almost sounds like a George Harrison song, or for you indie kids out there, something by young hipster Therapies Son. Well worth a listen if you like your BB backing tracks. I think it's on Leid in Hawaii.

Well, AGD's 'Bellagio' site is the place to start with the song titles and then it's just a case of tracking the damn things down. Starters for me would be the locating the Dumb Angel Rarities sets (not necessarily all 18 volumes !) and then fill in the gaps. However, being 'unofficial' releases we can't divulge where or how to get 'em  >:D
Trackwise, I'd defo have to agree with SH's inclusion of "Big Sur" (early take), along with "Add Some Music" and "Back Home" (both early versions from the Sunflower/Add Some Music sessions), then add in "Fallin' In Love(Lady)" "Sound Of Free" "Barbara" "Out In The Country" ... heck, ANYTHING from that 70-73 period. Got them all on my iPod on a regular loop. However, there ought to be a second list of those best to AVOID, so as not to stop your collecting dead in it's tracks. Starting that off would be "Battle Hymn Of The Republic" and the entire "Disco Celebration" album ... :smokin

Easy to be confused - the original lyric is entirely different, as is the recording, actually.

Thanks - actually, having dug around a bit it seems I have the early version of SAW. Is it the one with "on the Porch" lyrics, and slightly rougher production? Is there another version of SAW as the alternate one I have is not the song I'm thinking of?

The song that I remember I'm sure had some sort of ethereal stuff about Native American Indians (or could have been about wind or the coast or something *sorry*) and was kind of in the Califonia Saga vein, in that I think it changed tempo a bit and had a sort of widescreen feel. I know this is nothing to go on, but might you or anybody else have any idea what I'm talking about?! It could even be a studio song post Love You as I'm not so familiar with that period, although it sounded more like a 70s track. Man, if only I could find that tape!

Yes, the "On my porch" version is the earlier, 1978 recording - the other song you're likely remembering is "Looking Down The Coast/Monterey", which appears (in rerecorded form) on Alan's solo album of last year. Also from 1978, and it certainly changes tempo in the middle section.

Thanks AGD - astonished you could pinpoint it from my flakey description! Had a quick listen to that on Al's new album, and the slow part certainly sounds like the song I remember.

To answer the original question (although not in a way that helps the OP much, sadly...), I'd say: you know you're a die-hard Beach Boys fan when you have... at least six different versions of Heroes and Villains on your mega-playlist...

For a more serious answer, I'd say tracks that indicate that you're not just a 'Sounds Of Summer' kind of fan include (pre-Pet Sounds) She Knows Me Too Well, In The Back Of My Mind, and Summer Means New Love, and, for the late 60s stuff, With Me Tonight (Smiley version), Time To Get Alone (Hawthorne version), Aren't You Glad, Wake The World and All I Wanna Do from Sunflower. Oh, and Celebrate The News.

Thank You for all of your suggestions.

I just added Beach Boys Love You and Al/Beach Boys 2010 reunion single Don't Fight The Sea on my playlist.

Still looking, still taking requests!

I'm arriving late to The Beach Boys, Sean Lennon was right, he said listening to the Beach Boys were the most rewarding musical experience of his life. I so know what he means. Too bad that some people are so closed minded not wanting to understand how this feels. I feel more at peace and enlightened since rediscovering The Beach Boys.

Thanks again for you help,
it feels good to be around, dedicate BB friends and experts

Adrian

when you have..... not the standard mix of Pet Sounds songs, but either the stereo, acapella or instrumental versions

Geez, I feel like a lost cause. I have all of this stuff on my iPod. The only song that I know that I don't have on it is; When Girls Get Together. That has got to be the worst song Brian ever wrote. And why they ever resurrected it for Keepin' The Summer Alive is beyond me.

Agree to disagree, old friend. It's a most wonderful song and I can put it on repeat.

I'm guessing they needed a BW vocal that didn't sound like Wild Man Fischer.

Brian's demo of "You've Lost that Lovin Feeling"
"Where I Belong" from BB 1985
"Lady Lynda" from LA
"Baby Blue" from LA
"Just Once in My Life" from 15BO's
"The Trader" from Holland
....and oh so many more.

The 1976 demos of Still I Dream of It (released) and It's Over Now (unreleased), which are very lo-fi but sound 10 times better than the big band versions.

Stevie, probably the last decent Beach Boys song.

I disagree with all the love for the early (or any) version of Santa Ana Winds.

You know you're a die hard Beach Boys fan when you have your own SMiLE mixes and your own remixes of other songs made using the SoT isolations on yr mega BB playlist.
