Title: Walk Hard_Dewey Cox- Brian Wilson references-
Post by: kookadams on July 17, 2011, 01:04:26 AM
To anyone who's seen "Walk Hard: the Dewey Cox Story" I'm sure you've seen the Brian Wilson references:

1) Studio orchestration (Wrecking Crew reference)
2) Goat in the studio, and changing musical direction (Pet Sounds/Smile reference)
3) Theremin mentioning (Good Vibrations reference)
4) Seclusion & alienating himself from the mainstream & society
5) Drug use (especially LSD)
6) Returning to the limelight in 1976
7) Regretting unfinished biz with his dad...
8) Tantrums & erratic behavior
9) Nervous breakdown and feeling out of touch with the world-
10) Getting sober and healthy
11) Making a rap song (Wipeout & Smart Girls reference)
12) Receiving achievement awards and getting due credit

anything anyone else wanna add?

"Barnyard" reference:

Reference to Brian's 'wall of sound' production and SMiLE reference ("not finished yet"):

"It's still not finished yet. I'm hearing aboriginal percussionists. And I want an army of didgeridoos. Fifty thousand didgeridoos!"

Dewey goes to India to see a guru with the Beatles - Instead of Mike love.

One of the other band members during the whole Pet Sounds/Smile section says something along the lines of "don't screw with the recipe"...  ::)

Did Brian ever pay for the drugs ?

Didn't Brian mention something about $2000 worth of hash that he bought at the time?  I think its mentioned in Badman's book...

And don't forget Brian's confession on Mike Douglas that before he was put under Landy's care in '75 that his cocaine habit was $200 a day. And there's the rumored story of Brian getting his hands on $10,000 worth of it in one big pile in '78.

The trampoline takes the place of The Sandbox....

I thought it took the place of the swimming pool.  I never heard of people gathering in the sandbox.  Just his piano in the middle of it.

I finally watched part of this movie last night on Comedy Central but got the tail end of it so I missed out on any and all Beach Boys references. It's actually on TV again in a minute but I have things to do. I kind of want to see the movie now.

Get the director's cut because the smile scene goes on longer with more funny jokes. :)

I'm pretty certain Van Dyke Parks was involved in that particular "Smileish" piece.  I enjoyed the movie very much.

I believe he wrote the song "Black Sheep".  It's actually a pretty catch tune.  Perfect for the film.

I love the reference to the Brian/Van Dyke picture, with Brian showing him the chord on the Rickenbacker.  :lol

The rap song ("You Make Me Hard") had nothing to do with Brian.... that was a reference to Ray Charles.  Namely, how Kanye West turned "I Got A Woman" into "Gold Digger."

That's the good thing of this message board. You always get a on topic-answer even if you don't want to.  :-D I probably wasn't clear enough:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTbMNphP7Eo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTbMNphP7Eo)

Probyn told me that he is in the orchestra and/or big band at the end of the movie (I forget what it is at the tribute show thing at the end of the movie, but Probyn himself told me he is a musician in the ensemble). Also, I'm not sure anyone has mentioned that Van Dyke Parks wrote the song Black Sheep that they are recording in the Smile scene too
