Title: Gone with the Wind
Post by: Bill Ed on July 06, 2011, 06:42:38 PM
I recently bought a 5-cd set by Dave Brubeck. One cd, entitled Gone with Wind, has covers of Swanee River, Shortnin' Bread, and Ol' Man River. The last song features the Quartet's bassist Eugene Wright. I don't necessarily "get" Wright's work on this one, but does anyone else hear something vaguely familiar at about the 1:08 mark?

Half the "Heroes and Villains" melody. Likely just coincidence, really.

The genius of Brian Wilson is that the H&V theme is merely the major scale played backwards.  ;D

^^^^ And the chords to Eight Days A Week, in C#, and the bassline from umpteen Spector tunes... Genius, eh?  :lol

Ah yeah, almost ... But not quite ...

The chords to 8 Days a Week in C# would be C#M - D#M - F#M - C#M

And the H&V chords are: C#M - D#7 - G#7 - C#M

I think it's interesting that the Brubeck album has covers of The Old Folks at Home, Ol' Man River, and Short'nin' Bread, that Ol' Man River contains a bass run that sounds Like Heroes and Villains, and that Camptown Races is split between sides 1 and 2, just like Heroes and Villains might have been at some point. My guess is that Brian Wilson was familiar with this album.

Speaking of the Beatles . . .

I'll now knock this off before I start to annoy people.  :)
