Title: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? Post by: rab2591 on June 28, 2011, 06:03:59 PM I've really been into film scores and soundtracks lately...
Could be orchestral scores, or pop music soundtracks (Magical Mystery Tour), etc. My favorite orchestral score (has been since I was a kid) would have to be James Horner's score from Apollo 13. As of now my favorite soundtrack would have to be the soundtrack to 'Thicker Than Water' - a surf film by Jack Johnson. Anyone else out there have a favorite soundtrack??? Title: Re: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? Post by: SMiLE Brian on June 28, 2011, 06:11:12 PM I like the American Graffiti soundtrack, Vanishing point soundtrack, James Bond themes, easy rider, wes anderson films, italian westerns (the good, the bad, and the ugly), and Pet Sounds ( Soundtrack to Brian Wilson's life).
Title: Re: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? Post by: rab2591 on June 28, 2011, 06:40:39 PM Easy Rider & American Graffiti soundtracks :thumbsup
Ennio Morricone did a great film score for 'Mission To Mars' - probably my second favorite film score. Such great music! Title: Re: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? Post by: SMiLE Brian on June 28, 2011, 06:55:02 PM Did not know Ennio Morricone did mission to mars soundtrack, guess i need to watch that movie again to hear the soundtrack closely. All Summer Long and Ballad of Easy Rider were both amazing ending songs to a movie.
Title: Re: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? Post by: grillo on June 28, 2011, 07:22:45 PM Taxi Driver by Bernhard Hermann (sp?). He's the guy that did all those hitchcock films, but this is his best (and last. he died the night he finished recording it) at least for me. I think I like it 'cos it sort of reminds me of Smile with it's weird percussion and recurring theme(s). All Summer Long and Ballad of Easy Rider were both amazing ending songs to a movie. Definitely listen to the last two minutes of this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hql-U8Okheg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hql-U8Okheg) - Morricone did a phenomenal job with this score (this is probably my favorite individual piece of instrumental music I have heard - save Beethoven's 7th, In The Back Of My Mind, and Vivaldi's L'Estro Armonico Op. 3 concerto No. 10). Also, I created a thread a while back regarding musical influences for SMiLE and Morricone's work came up as a possible definite influence. Easy Rider has been one of my favorites ever since I saw it. That soundtrack is incredible. I remember listening to the commentary by Dennis Hopper and he said he almost had another band do the whole score (I think it was Crosby, Stills, and Nash) but then, thankfully, decided against it. A Clockwork Orange - Walter/Wendy Carlos
4. Star wars - John Williams 3. Lord of the Rings - Howard Shore 2. Empire of the Sun - John Williams/The Man With No Name trilogy - Ennio Morricone 1. Amadeus - Mozart/Neville Mariner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Title: Re: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? Post by: rab2591 on June 29, 2011, 06:03:03 AM Completely forgot about Empire of the Sun - Cadillac of the Skies is a definite top 5 favorite score songs for me.
Also, is your first choice from 'The Shawshank Redemption'? I can't remember but the name is awfully familiar. Title: Re: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? Post by: pixletwin on June 29, 2011, 07:28:57 AM The bit from Shawshank is from Marriage of Figaro and is not actually on the soundtrack to Amadeus. But Shawshank is also a lovely soundtrack. I hadn't thought about that one.
Title: Re: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? Post by: Rocker on June 29, 2011, 08:18:45 AM John Williams' soundtrack to "Hook" is an absolute favorite. Fantastic piece of work. It's dramatic, romantic, innocent and childlike, plus there are moments of pure beauty. I'm wondering if Brian would do soundtracks of this kind if it would sound lke this.
As for Pop-soundtracks: That's the way it is - Elvis Presley (King Creole if you talk about feature films, in fact there are a lot good soundtracks by Presley) Little Faus and Big Halsey - Johnny Cash & Carl Perkins Great balls of fire - Jerry Lee Lewis I like Magical Mystery Tour much, much better than the awful movie. American Graffiti is a classic f course I love the music in Two Lane Blacktop but it never had an official soundtrack afaik Title: Re: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? Post by: Roger Ryan on June 29, 2011, 08:21:26 AM Taxi Driver by Bernhard Hermann (sp?). Really like that score though...reminds me of 'The French Connection' - especially the percussion. That would be Bernard Herrmann, but, yes, he was brilliant and a favorite of mine. He really introduced the leitmotif to film scoring where a certain theme or phrase would be repeated (sometimes in a nearly unrecognizable variation) to link scenes with ones seen earlier in the film or draw attention to actions that have resonance later. This is now the standard way to score a film, but Herrmann pioneered this approach with CITIZEN KANE (pay close attention and Herrmann's score will actually reveal the mystery of "Rosebud" within the first 15 minutes of the film). He also liked to work with artificially-imposed restrictions such as his famous score for PSYCHO which only features stringed instruments. As far as modern film composers go, I adore the work of Carter Burwell. He handles much of the Coen Brothers' films and he always displays a very light but memorable touch. If we're talking a soundtrack made up of popular songs, I still think Simon and Garfunkel's work on THE GRADUATE is phenomenal. Scorsese always chooses just the right tunes to make his films work (think about how Frank Sinatra is used near the beginning of GOODFELLAS and Sid Vicious' take on "My Way" is used at the end). I also think the films of Paul Thomas Anderson use songs exceptionally well as does Cameron Crowe's. Title: Re: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? Title: Re: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? Post by: onkster on July 07, 2011, 01:44:23 PM My votes:
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Jon Brion - The English Patient - Scrooge - Leslie Bricusse (lonnnnnng OOP, dangit) - AI - John Williams - I could hardly believe this was him when I saw the credits--I usually associate him with more over the top, blockbuster themes, but this was really subtle and beautiful--really helped make the movie work. - Gizmo! - various artists. OK, there's no album for this, but all those funky, 70s, one-hit-wonder type pop songs were great. And those artists vanished in obscurity. Plus--what a fun little film. Nearly impossible to find. Title: Re: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? A Clockwork Orange Once Upon A Time In The West Mean Streets----great use of pop songs, as elsewhere in Scorsese's stuff There must be more but those four come readily to mind... [Later] Carrington----Michael Nyman and a dash of Schubert More and La Vallée----not least, but by means not only, because they necessarily don't have Mr Waters'----dare I say it?----cynicism splashed all over them Koyaanisqatsi and particularly Powaqqatsi----music by Philip Glass I must confess to not actually having seen the last four films----for which my apologies----I just love the music. That excerpt from Morricone's music for Mission to Mars is simply stunning... Title: Re: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? I`m bugged more by Phillip Seymour Hoffman holding the mic and putting it right on his mouth (he must be a fan of unessecary noise and distortion/overmodulation) than by the filmmakers` song choices.

One of the biggest disappointments I've experienced in recent years only because I actually thought the film would be about the pirate radio station(s) that operated outside of London in the 60s. Instead, it is simply PORKY'S on a boat. If the storyline about trying to get a teenager laid sounds good to you (and you can stomach Kenneth Branagh calling out for "Mr. Twatt" repeatedly like a tiresome schoolboy), then maybe you'll have some laughs. I think the cast is great, but they're given very little here that's amusing. The musical anachronisms go way beyond "Jumpin' Jack Flash"; one of the DJs actually plays a Cat Stevens' song from 1970 even though you're reminded at the film's end that the events shown all take place in 1966. Into the Wild- "Long Nights" came through my shuffle about a week after Michael Jackson died. I was driving and I had to pull over to bawl (I hadn't even come close to crying about him before.) It's haunting. Titanic soundtrack is good to write papers with Good Will Hunting. Elliott Smith - "Between the Bars" (Orchestral) Jeb Loy Nichols - "As the Rain" Elliott Smith - "Angeles" Elliott Smith - "No Name #3" The Waterboys - "Fisherman's Blues" Luscious Jackson - "Why Do I Lie?" Danny Elfman - "Will Hunting" (Main Titles) Elliott Smith - "Between the Bars" Elliott Smith - "Say Yes" Gerry Rafferty - "Baker Street" Andru Donalds - "Somebody's Baby" The Dandy Warhols - "Boys Better" Al Green - "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?" Elliott Smith - "Miss Misery" Danny Elfman - "Weepy Donuts" Yesyesyeysyesysyeyeysyes. Will always be thankful for this movie exposing me to Elliott Smith. Title: Re: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? Scores to "North by Northwest", "Psycho" - Bernard Herrmann "Rear Window" (1954) - Franz Waxman "Dead of Winter" (1987) - piano music by Richard Einhorn + automated playing Chopin's "Nocturne in C-sharp moll" "The Night of the Hunter" - Walter Schumann; Robert Mitchum singing "Leaning", uncle Birdie playing banjo & singing "'Twas down at Cresap's Landin'" "Spellbinder: Land of the Dragon Lord" (Australian-Chinese-Polish TV show, 1997) - Ian Davidson "Repulsion" - Chico Hamilton "Harry & Tonto" - Bill Conti + Art Carney singing with nerdy girl "Chicago, Chicago" while driving to Chicago to daughter (Ellen Burstyn). "My Left Foot", "To Kill a Mockingbird" - Elmer Bernstein "Airplane" (1980) - during credits "Notre Dame Victory March". I like marches! :3d "Jurassic Park", "Jaws", "Indiana Jones" - John Williams "Pulp Fiction" - except the boring Dusty Springfield & Urge Overkill; don't like the voice & Spanish/Mexican music, respectively. "The Good, the Bad, the Ugly" - Ennio Morricone "La Casa 3" (trash horror with bunch of unknowns) - Piero Montanari + the organ music with evil clown toy voiceover "La Casa 4" (trash horror with David Hasselhoff & 30-year-old Linda Blair again possessed with bunch of unknowns) - Carlo Maria Cordio + song at the end Electronic bird noises in "The Birds" "Educating Rita" - David Hentschel Title: Re: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? Post by: RangeRoverA1 on November 07, 2016, 04:21:51 AM I don't care for the movie nowadays, still like soundtrack to The Big Chill. You're smart. Indeed, movies with boring script/ liked in the past - at least they've got great music. Related, years ago the TV rolled the ads of various films to see this week, when "King Solomon's Mines" showed, I liked hearing the main music. The movie's cheap copy of "Indiana Jones" (adventure chap with insufferable girl).Mentioned b4 "Kit Kittredge: An American Girl". It's about girl Kit & her fam & neighbors during 1930s dealing with Great Depression in Cincinnati. Joseph Vitarelli did the score which sounds very of-the-times, light jazz & to my ears done very professionally. Besides, there is retro music, as well as remakes of it covered by current artists. It's tasteful & fits the narrative. "Coffee & Cigarettes" - begins with "Louie Louie" by Richard Berry, the favorite & the best version. Tom Waits didn't like the script his good ole buddy director Jim Jarmusch gave. His dialog bits. He didn't get the sense of humor. Then Jim changed/added the lines & Tom's up for it, written song "Saw Sage". The best track Modern Jazz Quartet "Baden Baden". "Miss Marple" - Ken Howard & Alan Blaikley. "Song of the South" (1946) - "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah". It's big favorite since 19 when 1st watched this Disney picture. Uncle Remus sings. Title: Re: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? Post by: bluesno1fann on December 19, 2016, 01:41:23 AM Currently digging the Pirate Radio soundtrack. Lotsa great mid-60s hits -- but I tried to watch this flick on DVD the other day. Made it about half way -- very disappointing. Also a few anachronisms such as "Jumping Jack Flash" in 1966! Nonetheless, when the BBs play ("Little saint Nick"), it's a good movie for a few minutes. I still have to check that one out. I'm not much into movies or TV anymore, so when I do watch I make sure it's worth it - thus I've been putting off Pirate Radio because of the iffy reviews. I found this film to be terrible. I didn't make it to the Cat Stevens song! Anyway, you nailed it "Porky's on a boat." I am a big radio fan, particularly concerning renegade voices and forbidden music, and this really had nothing to do with any of that. Rote, by the numbers, etc. I ADORE The Boat That Rocked! One of my favourite films of all time, with one of my favourite soundtracks of all time! The anachronisms in song choice is a minor issue yeah, but it doesn't bother me too much. Still great music regardless. That said, I've heard nothing but bad things about the Pirate Radio edit which is quite bastardised apparently. Anyway, I'd also add American Graffiti and Animal House as soundtracks that I love, each containing brilliant tracks from the 50s and early 60s Title: Re: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? What about recent movie soundtracks, Rei? & which song was pleasant surprise to hear in the movies you mentioned? Well the songs I quite liked which I either discovered or was pleasantly surprised to hear include "Runaway" by Del Shannon and "Green Onions" by Booker T And The MG's on American Graffiti and "Let's Dance" by Chris Montez and "Hey Paula" by Paul And Paula on Animal House. As for recent movies.... I'd really have to think about that. But as scores go, I really like the one that was used for The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, which I found very effective and at times moving. Forgot to mention that I'm also very fond of the soundtrack to the 1974 version of The Great Gatsby - which was one of the best aspects of the movie for me.... and they had to go and ruin it all on the DiCaprio version of the film, of which I've seen a few clips but am not keen on checking out Title: Re: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? I saw the film when it was released in the cinema and the film remains to this day my all-time favorite. I bought the LP the following week and the CD when it was released with an extra fifteen minute Suite. It was the perfect marriage of film and score. The Ladd company was winding down at the time the film was released and they forgot to enter the score for The Oscars. It would have walked away with it. If you've never seen this film, seek it out. Yes, it's hard to beat this overture. I had the good fortune of watching this movie (can't count how many times) when the restored film was shown in cinemas a good while back. I was mesmerized by it and the overture , played before the film started, set the mood perfectly. The movie comes on quite frequently on our classic movie channel but I don't usually watch it since the screen on my telly is so tiny. This movie screams to be shown on the big screen and I hope it will be again . Title: Re: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? Post by: JK on October 20, 2018, 08:19:23 AM Good to see you JK! I still read articles debating "what really happened at Deraa?"
In the movie I think it was Bently who asked Sherif Ali "what happened to Lawrence at Deraa?" and he replied something like " he's still a man, humbled. " His life after going back home is especially fascinating. as for the movie, I had seen untold numbers of movies starring Peter O'Toole so knew he would be good, but he just blew me away. As I said, I saw the movie numerous times in the movie theater. One time the scene played where he was racing his motorcycle up a hill in the left lane . a lady in the audience shouted out, "that's why he died - he was in the wrong lane !" :P Title: Re: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? When you hear its music, the intro, you will not believe it's written by Henry Mancini, "Moon River" fame. He got 2 pianos playing alternatingly in-tune AND detuned to get the eerie effect. I.e. eerie melody is gotten eerier by such technique. Few google pages say he is pioneer in doing it. Is it true? Who can tell? It seems familiar or do I rmbr modern use, *after* Mancini?

Those are definitely the Olivia Newton John tracks that have held my interest the most over the years and the ELO tracks are just good, strong pop. I've always looked upon "All Over The World" by ELO as the intro theme song to the decade of the 1980s (the decade I came of age in). I was in 5th grade when this soundtrack album was on the charts and a girl in class used to bring it to school and we'd play it during breaks.

Most of the non-Jon stuff is great too--whether he picked those for inclusion, I don't know, but some of them sure feel like it...

Post by: JK on October 01, 2020, 03:01:00 AM No idea whether this has been linked already, but after watching the 2013 film adaptation of Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby on two successive nights it struck me what a great job Jay-Z made of the OST. This is "Bang Bang" by will.i.am ft. Shelby Spalione:

(Not Shostakovich's opera The Nose, although there's certainly a very strong Shosty component to it eminently befitting the post-Stalin mood of this extraordinary and often gut-bustingly funny film.)
