Title: What Is Your Favorite Soundtrack? Post by: rab2591 on June 28, 2011, 06:03:59 PM I've really been into film scores and soundtracks lately...
Could be orchestral scores, or pop music soundtracks (Magical Mystery Tour), etc. My favorite orchestral score (has been since I was a kid) would have to be James Horner's score from Apollo 13. As of now my favorite soundtrack would have to be the soundtrack to 'Thicker Than Water' - a surf film by Jack Johnson. Anyone else out there have a favorite soundtrack??? Also, I created a thread a while back regarding musical influences for SMiLE and Morricone's work came up as a possible definite influence. Easy Rider has been one of my favorites ever since I saw it. That soundtrack is incredible. I remember listening to the commentary by Dennis Hopper and he said he almost had another band do the whole score (I think it was Crosby, Stills, and Nash) but then, thankfully, decided against it. It's dramatic, romantic, innocent and childlike, plus there are moments of pure beauty. I'm wondering if Brian would do soundtracks of this kind if it would sound lke this.
As for Pop-soundtracks: That's the way it is - Elvis Presley (King Creole if you talk about feature films, in fact there are a lot good soundtracks by Presley) Little Faus and Big Halsey - Johnny Cash & Carl Perkins Great balls of fire - Jerry Lee Lewis I like Magical Mystery Tour much, much better than the awful movie. He really introduced the leitmotif to film scoring where a certain theme or phrase would be repeated (sometimes in a nearly unrecognizable variation) to link scenes with ones seen earlier in the film or draw attention to actions that have resonance later. This is now the standard way to score a film, but Herrmann pioneered this approach with CITIZEN KANE (pay close attention and Herrmann's score will actually reveal the mystery of "Rosebud" within the first 15 minutes of the film). He also liked to work with artificially-imposed restrictions such as his famous score for PSYCHO which only features stringed instruments. As far as modern film composers go, I adore the work of Carter Burwell. He handles much of the Coen Brothers' films and he always displays a very light but memorable touch. If we're talking a soundtrack made up of popular songs, I still think Simon and Garfunkel's work on THE GRADUATE is phenomenal. Scorsese always chooses just the right tunes to make his films work (think about how Frank Sinatra is used near the beginning of GOODFELLAS and Sid Vicious' take on "My Way" is used at the end). OK, there's no album for this, but all those funky, 70s, one-hit-wonder type pop songs were great. And those artists vanished in obscurity. Plus--what a fun little film. Nearly impossible to find. I`m bugged more by Phillip Seymour Hoffman holding the mic and putting it right on his mouth (he must be a fan of unessecary noise and distortion/overmodulation) than by the filmmakers` song choices.

I am a big radio fan, particularly concerning renegade voices and forbidden music, and this really had nothing to do with any of that. I'm not a fan of the songs written specifically for the movie, but the choice of songs used throughout the movie is fantastic. I feel like much of what Jon Brion did in Eternal Sunshine, especially the Peer Pressure track, was lifted from this track by James Horner. I also feel that much Thomas Newman's style come from this track. Been a Jarmusch fan for years and have recently started to swear by Neil Young, so it's nice when 2 things overlap in such a way. The soundtrack to this works better in the context of the film, imo. It's mostly improvised, Neil solo on a guitar. It's a shame the intro/end credits theme wasn't included in the soundtrack because it's such a haunting piece.

I still have to check that one out. I'm not much into movies or TV anymore, so when I do watch I make sure it's worth it - thus I've been putting off Pirate Radio because of the iffy reviews. I found this film to be terrible. One of the biggest disappointments I've experienced in recent years only because I actually thought the film would be about the pirate radio station(s) that operated outside of London in the 60s. Instead, it is simply PORKY'S on a boat. If the storyline about trying to get a teenager laid sounds good to you (and you can stomach Kenneth Branagh calling out for "Mr. Twatt" repeatedly like a tiresome schoolboy), then maybe you'll have some laughs. I think the cast is great, but they're given very little here that's amusing. The musical anachronisms go way beyond "Jumpin' Jack Flash"; one of the DJs actually plays a Cat Stevens' song from 1970 even though you're reminded at the film's end that the events shown all take place in 1966. I didn't make it to the Cat Stevens song! Anyway, you nailed it "Porky's on a boat." I am a big radio fan, particularly concerning renegade voices and forbidden music, and this really had nothing to do with any of that. Rote, by the numbers, etc. I ADORE The Boat That Rocked! One of my favourite films of all time, with one of my favourite soundtracks of all time! The anachronisms in song choice is a minor issue yeah, but it doesn't bother me too much. Still great music regardless. That said, I've heard nothing but bad things about the Pirate Radio edit which is quite bastardised apparently. I saw the film when it was released in the cinema and the film remains to this day my all-time favorite. I bought the LP the following week and the CD when it was released with an extra fifteen minute Suite. It was the perfect marriage of film and score. The Ladd company was winding down at the time the film was released and they forgot to enter the score for The Oscars. It would have walked away with it. If you've never seen this film, seek it out. Yes, it's hard to beat this overture. I had the good fortune of watching this movie (can't count how many times) when the restored film was shown in cinemas a good while back. I was mesmerized by it and the overture , played before the film started, set the mood perfectly. The movie comes on quite frequently on our classic movie channel but I don't usually watch it since the screen on my telly is so tiny. In the movie I think it was Bently who asked Sherif Ali "what happened to Lawrence at Deraa?" and he replied something like " he's still a man, humbled. " His life after going back home is especially fascinating. as for the movie, I had seen untold numbers of movies starring Peter O'Toole so knew he would be good, but he just blew me away. As I said, I saw the movie numerous times in the movie theater. When you hear its music, the intro, you will not believe it's written by Henry Mancini, "Moon River" fame. He got 2 pianos playing alternatingly in-tune AND detuned to get the eerie effect. I.e. eerie melody is gotten eerier by such technique. Few google pages say he is pioneer in doing it. Is it true? Who can tell? It seems familiar or do I rmbr modern use, *after* Mancini?

The Oliva and ELO songs (plus the cut featuring The Tubes) actually makes for a solid album. Those are definitely the Olivia Newton John tracks that have held my interest the most over the years and the ELO tracks are just good, strong pop. I've always looked upon "All Over The World" by ELO as the intro theme song to the decade of the 1980s (the decade I came of age in). I was in 5th grade when this soundtrack album was on the charts and a girl in class used to bring it to school and we'd play it during breaks.

Post by: onkster on September 03, 2020, 09:34:36 AM As far as Jon Brion OST's go, I'm still in love with "Eternal Sunshine"--that album really plays like an album, with only a couple minor exceptions (that strummy acoustic song in the middle I could do without--not a Jon tune, BTW). Most of the non-Jon stuff is great too--whether he picked those for inclusion, I don't know, but some of them sure feel like it...

(Not Shostakovich's opera The Nose, although there's certainly a very strong Shosty component to it eminently befitting the post-Stalin mood of this extraordinary and often gut-bustingly funny film.)
