Title: Glen Campbell diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease
Post by: LostArt on June 22, 2011, 08:50:11 AM
It's too bad.  It sounds like he can still function, and is even planning a few farewell concerts.

WOW, I didn't realize Glen is 75! I pegged him for being close to Brian.

Sad news, such an awful disease. Glad he's able to go out gracefully.

I suddenly got really sad about this today. And I'm hardly what you'd call a big fan.

The fella needs to have a documentary or some kind of interview or write his memoirs or something whilst he still can. He'd have so much to tell.

I hate learning about great musicians when they die or get terminal illness. Which i guess is a trivial complaint, as they leave wonderful music behind, but still. Happened with Alex Chilton, Isaac Hayes, The Louvin Brothers, Beefheart..... It makes me so sad.

I wonder if Todd Gold is interested?   :-D

But you're right; it would be cool for him to get it all down; just unlikely.

There was a "Behind The Music" on Glen that aired on VH1 a few years back.  It was cool to see Al De Lory interviewed, whom I'd previously only known by name (from his work on BBs records).

Glen HAS written his own biography, albeit a few years back. Came out in 1994 ... enjoyable but it could have been twice the size with all the stories he COULD have told  8)

This is so sad, I wish he would tell all the music stories he knows before that terrible disease robs him of memories.

I've never been a fan of his, but man, that article was sad. It seems like he's already starting to lose track of a normal every day conversation. Damn it, why do bad things always happen to good people?  >:(

Glen Campbell looks forward with gratitude

He has a new album coming out and plans for an international concert tour. What else would a singer who has Alzheimer's disease do?

Campbell was a key member of the fabled group of L.A. studio musicians known as the Wrecking Crew for their ability to knock out hit after hit for artists including Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Dean Martin, Merle Haggard and the Beach Boys. Beyond his two-year touring and recording stint with the Beach Boys, he scored his own hits, beginning in 1961 with "Turn Around, Look at Me," then won his first Grammy for 1967's "Gentle on My Mind."

Here's an interview with Glen Campbell (http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/aug/26/glen-campbell-interview/print) to balance out the sadness of his diagnosis. It's really quite touching, and I thought his reasons for continued touring were not wholly unlike Brian's perhaps.

There was a Glen Campbell interview with Iain Lee on Absolute Radio, just finished. I think you can find the unedited interview here http://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/iain-lees-best-bits/id295620851 (http://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/iain-lees-best-bits/id295620851) (I don't have iTunes, so I've no idea).

He was delightful to hear but I imagine the unedited versions has him pausing for long gaps, which they edited out (as they mentioned on the show).

Interestingly (to me anyway) they were giving away 2 signed copies of his new album and I won one of them ;D I'm ecstatic cos I never win things. I would really love to see the guy, I'm contemplating going to York or Nottingham.
