Title: Re: Ol' Man River info Post by: Bicyclerider on June 21, 2011, 01:55:22 PM Does anyone know the history behind the cover of this song? What project is was intended for, and what state of completion it was in at the time? read some comment on a youtube page (for whatever it's worth) that alluded to Mike Love coming in the way of Brian's Ol' Man River project, but I've never heard any of this before... The story I remember is that Brian was obsessively recording and rerecording vocals for the song and carl finally got fed up with it. Title: Re: Ol' Man River info Post by: Musketeer on June 21, 2011, 02:11:28 PM I thought it was Mike that got fed up with it.

But Mike is the one who told Brian that they'd wasted enough time and money and they weren't going to be singing Ol' Man River anymore. or at least that's what was in the Carlin bio. Did Brian have a similar obsession with this tune as he did with Shortenin' Bread? How many different versions or takes are out there? I've only heard the twofer version and the Hawthorn version.
I've done a cover of The Beach Boys version of Ol Man River. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCJdqp8gGdQ Dude! Great work... again! I've listened to many tracks on your youtube channel. It's uncanny! You have the most authentic sounding beach boys vocal blend out there in my opinion. I'm from Perth too. Title: Re: Ol' Man River info Post by: hypehat on June 21, 2011, 06:39:53 PM Cool. Mostly of it at the faster pace. Title: Re: Ol' Man River info Post by: dmcguire70 on June 21, 2011, 06:44:53 PM Cool. I haven't heard much about the history of Ol Man River. You did your own special arrangement here, which was very cool. And you've got a great voice! Title: Re: Ol' Man River info Post by: Jason on June 21, 2011, 07:40:29 PM Someone needs to do a punk version of the Brian arrangement of Ol' Man River. Downtune the guitars, key of Gb. Go for it.

Title: Re: Ol' Man River info Post by: Loaf on June 23, 2011, 01:15:43 AM Is it just me, or can anyone else here not get enough of Old Man River? especially the faster version.
I love the voices, the production. Brian had hit a real sweet spot in this era, homemade and lush and glowing with soul. I would pay a lot of money for a one hour CD of Old Man River. IMO, the instrumental on the new Gershwin album, the horns in particular, sounds a lot like a section of OMR from the Friends/20/20 twofer. |
