Title: Has 'All I wanna Do' & 'She Knows me To well' been pllayed Live?
Post by: AllIWannaDo on June 13, 2011, 06:49:47 AM
Hi

Two of My fav beach boys tunes are....

All I wanna do
She Knows me To well

But finding these played live , especially the first one is proving a fruitless task!

I loved she knows me to well for aloooong time, but then i found the .... 'She Knows Me Too Well (Take 16, Stereo Chorus Overdub Session)' from ''Archaeology: Lost Recording Sessions 1963-1968 (Disk 4)'' I've got it showing as track 15?
wow - this blows my mind everytime i hear it - its astoundingly good!!! genius is overused but here the harmonies/counter harmonies on such a loveley tune are effortlessly top notch! (Take 17 is also vgood but also has the lead vocal in which for singing along isnt as much fun, however it's beautifully sung, really beautiful!

AAAnnny way, I'd love to hear both live, wether Beach Boys from that era or Brian Wilson and his amazing band

can anyone point me in the right direction if poss?

Thanks for your help

Brian played She Knows Me Too Well during the TLOS premiere concerts in September of 2007; at the same shows he began performing I'd Love Just Once To See You. The latter lasted a bit longer in the setlist.

haha cheers for that - i'd forgotten about I'd Love Just Once To See You.

Thats cool (but I'm not sending any nude pictures)  but I'm mainly after 'all i wanna do' live really
i LOVE that song, its got abit of classic elvis style chord progressions in it which is interesting (yes i know he didnt write his own tunes).
If it's never been played live well... thats just a shame man, its one of my all time favs!

GREAT SINGING!!! really fragile lead sat on lovely strong chordal BV's, classic Wilson Vocal Production/Arrangement stuff for me

As far as I'm aware the Beach Boys never played All I Wanna Do live, however, All I Want To Do was played in a few encores during late '68.

So on any "All I Wanna Do" live versions...did a fan get dragged up on stage for the, uh, fadeout?

You're referring to All I Want To Do...and no.

For one (or a few) performances Brian doubled Jeff's lead with a deeper voice iirc

Ummm... can you imagine doing it live given early 70s touring technology ?

It could have been modified, besides as early as 1971 samples were being played in Who shows.

AGD's right, it'd be basically impossible. SO MUCH PHASE. SO MUCH REVERB. The only way it'd work is if it was completely stripped down, and then it'd lose a lot of power. The production makes that song.

hmmm you might be right but i'm not sure you know,i mean its vocals, mellotron, organ, simple guitar riff, plucked bass, are really important to the song so its defo a possibility - sure there is ALOT of phase/reverb but is it harder than breakaway for eg?

Firstly, no Mellotron: don't care what the Mellotron site says, the BB never used one.

Secondly, the entire essence of the song is the engineering - take away the delayed echo vocal and the moog washes and slabs and it's just a simple little pop song.

Thirdly, "Break Away" was indeed much more complex. Vocally. In terms of the track, easy enough to do live.

haha i thought you might throw the vocal argument at me there tbh, good point.

I'm not sure, I've got to be honest if you play the song its a great little melodic pop song with a good sentiment, i mean you can see a few dif versions other people have done acoustic and it still shines as a great tune

i think there's a Dolby Stretch going on in AIWD - where you record with the Dolby noise encoding ON then take it OFF for playback / mixdown. Sounds like an exaggerated compression ie very cool.  AGD, didn't Sean MacReavy sing All I Wanna Do at that gig in Edinburgh a few years back (where we also did All This Is That with no rehearsal)?

I do believe he did... as I recall the lead and track were fine, the attempts to do a delayed echo set of bvs were... a game attempt.  :)

guid = good, pronounced 'gid'
chanter = singer, as in 'he makes a pleasant sound while chanting tunefully', pronounced, 'chanturr'

and yes, a Scottish thing  :)

No arguments at all from me about the quality of the singing, but my recollection/records of the event does/do not include any elements from AIWD.   The infamous TM medley to which David refers was constructed as follows:

TM (the Charles Lloyd piece)
All This Is That
Friends (bridge and final verse)
TM Song (from 15 Big Ones, sans argument on the lawn)
He Come Down
Back In the USSR (bridge) - don't ask why!
Friends (tag only)

It was indeed totally unrehearsed.  And I doubt it will ever be repeated.  It was just one of those glorious fleeting moments of ultra-fanboy fetishism made manifest.

May that have been included due to Mike's "famous" assertion that he gave McCartney the idea for certain parts of the song whilst on the Rishikesh retreat? Who is this guy who did this "TM medley" anyway?

i remember now - for those who don't know what we're talking about here this was a wonderful event at ST Brides Church (I think) in Edinburgh a few years back run by Beach Boys Britain. That TM Medley was a really great idea - Francis Greene, Daniel McGeever, Sean MacReavy, mebbe Laurence on guitar and I can't remember who else. You guys should record that and put it out online or summat - who else is interpreting BW/BB music in that way? I also seem to remember Val from BBB and AGD singing Had To Phone Ya. What a brilliant song and a nice fun rendition too.

Sean still does a silly medley ( and I guess this one was my prompting to him ) gave him a few hours and he sorted it along with writing all the charts - Clever Boy

Was Back in The USSR in there because of the connection with Mike Love, Paul McCartney, and India?
