Title: New Canadian Brian Wilson interviews
Post by: Mark Dillon on May 30, 2011, 07:02:00 AM
Brian has been doing the media rounds here in Toronto to promote his upcoming Canadian tour. Sorry if this has already been posted, but here is his interview on the CBC Radio show Q from last week: http://www.cbc.ca/q/blog/2011/05/24/brian-wilson-clip/. There's a video clip as well as the entire radio interview. It's more in-depth than usual. This Friday, he will be on the CBC TV show George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight. The episode will likely be archived here: http://www.cbc.ca/video/#/Shows/George_Stroumboulopoulos_Tonight. Enjoy.

The audio clip (full interview) keeps skipping back to the introductory WIBN session. Just my bad luck, or is anyone else having similar issues?

Thanks! This is a really good interview, btw. Hits upon familiar points, but he's on v good form! Kinda sad how he said he would be happiest back when he was 24.....

Although it is obviously heavily cut - The interviewer makes repeated references to the interviews being half an hour long, but they're more like 15 minutes, with clips of songs placed every so often - Bach, Four Freshmen, several BB's cuts.

That was an excellent interview. I liked how the interviewer engaged Brian with the Four Freshman and Bach tunes. I liked hearing Brian talk about the creative process, and coming up with chords first, then the melody.

I also like Brian's honesty - "Marijuana helped me write Pet Sounds." and about Smile (paraphrased) "We got stoned and wrote 30 to 60 second snippets." Then he says he would second guess himself about whether is was good or not.

I wonder how Brian felt about hearing that snippet of the Mike Douglass interview?  He didn't shut down and revert to the single word answers. Funny too at the end - "Gimme a better hanshake than that." Just great!

Good interview. Brian was a bit withdrawn until the interview played the Four Freshmen. Then he perked right up and was prepared to answer all the questions!

i just watched teh Brian interview on the George show. Wow that was interesting. Brian seemed to be quite engaged for the most part. There wa s a time when he was having trouble eliciting more than one word answers, but also got him to comment on Spector, Pacific Ocean Blue, Bach, Beethoven,Carl, Dennis, Murry and Mike. "....Denis was rude..."

Essential viewing!

Here is a clip, I am sure they will put up the entire interview at some point.

Some of the typical ground was covered, but you haven't heard too many interviewers lately ask Brian about Murry, let alone his thoughts about his own mortality. Nice to hear Brian sing a bit from "River Song".

Paraphrasing, but:o get my but up on stage

"I decicded if I wantto stay in the musi cbuisness I have to get my butt up on stage."

"When did you decide that?"

"Yesterday."

Some other points he made:

First time he heard Pacific Ocean Blue was 1981

"Are you still writing?"
"Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeenoh"

On who he would have liked to have worked with
"Paul Mccartney"

Barbara Ann was a number one record

Dennis was a rude person

He always had a great relationship with his brothers

Try 1977, before it was released. Unless Dennis was telling porkies.  :)

This guy George is a very good interviewer. Right up there with Pete Fornatale. He's obviously a fan and has done his homework.

Yes I know, 1981 is just what he said.

Also credited Bach with the inspiration to California Gorls and said Gershwin IS rock n roll. :)

There's the full interview. Probably the best Brian interview I've seen in the last 5-10 years. George gets a little heavy on "how did that feel?" But Brian is very talkative.
