Title: Old Master Painter - the cut-up version?
Post by: onkster on May 24, 2011, 03:52:35 PM
I don't ever recall hearing a followup story about Carl's finding The Old Master Painter master tape chopped up in a dumpster, and having to piece it back together again.

a) given that there seem to be several full, hi-fi takes on various SMiLE boot boxes, this seems unlikely that it ever happened, and

b) if somebody were shredding SMiLE tapes, wouldn't something else have gotten shredded too? (GV vocal masters? Just kidding. I hope.)

c) would Carl have been talking about a mixdown rather than a session tape?

d) was it all in his imagination?

Sorry if this has been covered before--if so, I've never seen it. Thanks!

By most accounts, the GV masters are fodido.

Also one of our OMP experiences comes from an acetate

I think the good sound quality takes that were booted are without vox. The vocal take - which seems to be sourced from an acetate on the bootlegs - seems to have been cut from that reel and not have been available to the bootleggers. I hope they found that one for the new box!

I could be wrong though about all this!  :-D
