Title: Odd, weird, disturbing, or downright \ Post by: Jay on May 23, 2011, 09:27:13 PM I just listened to a recording called "Past Present and Future" by The Shangri La's, and was inspired to make this thread. I guess this could work in the same way that the Psychadelic thread works. I thought we could all name songs(or give YouTube links to) certain songs that we have always thought were a little odd, or strange. Or downright forboding and disturbing or "freaky". It doesn't even necissarily have to be a song that's meant to be weird. It could just be any song or recording that sticks out to you. Something that makes you think "something isn't right here...". A good example is "Past Present and Future", which I mentioned above. Here is a link to it:http: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3hCZiTNric
Or to give an example of an odd recording that might not have been intended to be that way would be a song called The Big Hurt by Toni Fisher. Something about it just creeps me out. Here's a link to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWDT7TB6YpY Title: Re: Odd, weird, disturbing, or downright \ Post by: JMZ on May 24, 2011, 06:09:07 AM I didn't knew the Shagri-Las one ... It's really, really great and impressive. :smokin
The Tony Fisher I knew because of the famous flanging sound at the begining. It's commonly regarded as the first flanging effect ever recorded. It's really, really great and impressive. :smokin The Tony Fisher I knew because of the famous flanging sound at the begining. It's commonly regarded as the first flanging effect ever recorded. Yes! That was done at Gold Star by Stan Ross and Larry Levine, and is credited as the first use of tape phasing when they linked two machines together. I'd argue I hear some of the same effect on Les Paul's first breakthrough "new sound" record "Lover". Here is an original 78 of Lover, so the sound quality isn't up to par but still: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LYmchIReOM&feature=fvwrel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LYmchIReOM&feature=fvwrel) Listen at 1:34 and 2:20 on this clip and you'll hear phasing, and this song was a pretty big hit in the late 40's. Disclaimer: If I remember, Les was using all discs to make these overdubs rather than tape so the Toni Fisher stands as tape phasing and Les' is slightly different in how he got it but the same effect. Les said he was trying to capture the sound of a shortwave or distant AM radio broadcast going in and out of tune as you listen, and that's where his phasing/flanging sounds were born. Lover is a bizarre record - it sounds like the late 40's jet age to me. All kinds of rare and obscure stuff; underground psych, lo-fi folk, noise, hard rock, lounge, fusion, progressive rock, ambient, disco, chanson, tropicalia, you name it. Stuff from all over the world, too. Lots of Eastern European and Asian stuff.

I think "Past, Present and Future" by The Shangri Las might sum it up the best. I'm looking for songs that you listen to and think "Hmm, something sounds very wrong here". When you listen to "Past Present and Future", the lyrics don't come right out and say it, but the listener is left with a distinct feeling that somebody was raped. DOA by Bloodrock is another example.
The Mother Stood was weird as hell. I swear those moogs were talking to me. :brian Title: Re: Odd, weird, disturbing, or downright \ Post by: Aum Bop Diddit on May 24, 2011, 08:12:45 PM Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but the one, the only Shaggs....

The first time I heard that "song", I was on the computer late at night, by myself and with the lights off. Not one of the smarter ideas I've had. ;D
Title: Re: Odd, weird, disturbing, or downright \ Post by: Jason on May 24, 2011, 10:03:31 PM Honestly, just about everything on Suicide's first album would count in this thread. There's definitely a pop sensibility to their stuff, but the idling engine-like sounds of the drum machine and the distorted organs seem to mask that. They lost that sound on the four albums that followed, opting for a cleaner production; it's also of note that Martin Rev came into newer keyboards and left the Farfisa organ of the first album behind, although he'd still play it in concert as late as 1980.
Essentially, Suicide is rockabilly with a completely atypical sound. If you transcribe some of the keyboard lines to guitar, you basically have rockabilly rhythms and beats. Title: Re: Odd, weird, disturbing, or downright \ Post by: Mike's Beard on May 25, 2011, 10:48:02 AM Something about the title track on The Cure's "Pornography" creeps me out everytime I listen to it.

Title: Re: Odd, weird, disturbing, or downright \ Post by: All Golden 74 on May 25, 2011, 07:13:42 PM I remember hearing a John Lee Hooker song about how he shot his girlfriend/woman with a shotgun - it was on a Blues at noon radio show on the local college radio. This was followed by a panel discussion about sexism in the modern-day workplace. The song was disturbing - the programming was odd.
Title: Re: Odd, weird, disturbing, or downright \ Post by: Jason on May 25, 2011, 07:19:01 PM Throbbing Gristle...oh man. They are definitely one of those groups that "separate the men from the boys", for lack of a better phrase. But there is so much to their music once you get past the initial "WHAT THE FODA IS THIS NOISE?!?" period. Some of their stuff could very well be considered dark ambient music, a good five years before Lustmord was releasing records. Then on the other hand you have much of the stuff on 20 Jazz Funk Greats, which sounds like very early techno. There was a method to their madness. Psychic TV, Coil, and Chris and Cosey were nowhere near as daring as TG ever were.
Title: Re: Odd, weird, disturbing, or downright \ Post by: All Golden 74 on May 25, 2011, 07:24:51 PM Genesis P (or was it Psychic TV?) did a pretty-straight version of Good Vibrations - that was pretty odd!

Bill Holt. This guy is one of the true enigmas in "pop" music. Born and raised in Philadelphia, great fan of the Beatles, Bob Dylan and such, corporate suit and tie worker, he quit his job in 1972 in order to follow his musical muse and wrote and recorded what became 1973's Dreamies on a TEAC 4-track recorder with only acoustic guitar, Moog Sonic 6, a very primitive drum machine, a pocket watch, and hundreds of snippets of found sound (political speeches, news clips, advertisements, Beatles songs, nature field recordings; effectively one of the first uses of sampling) as his instruments. One of the most confounding yet amazing albums to ever come out of the 1970s. He wasn't able to immediately follow it up, since he had to return to the 9 to 5 lifestyle in order to support his family as he was out of work almost eighteen months and living on savings; the sequel Dreamies Program Twelve (The End Is Near) came in 2006, a few years after he retired from his company. Both are required listening. Unfortunately neither are anywhere on YouTube but can be found on the usual sites for purchase. Just dig the album cover... "Ave Satanas III" by Morke, from Germany. 1995. The first band to identify as "NS black metal". I am not posting this as a way of sharing personal views (I wholeheartedly disagree with the views of this band) but merely to add content to the thread. And content it is. Title: Re: Odd, weird, disturbing, or downright \ Post by: Jay on June 15, 2011, 08:58:49 PM I'd like to take this thread in s slightly different direction. Right now I'm looking for songs with a "twist" ending. Songs that when they end, you're left with kind of a "whoa!" reaction. Or, a song whose lyrics leave you kind of...empty, I guess. Lucy Jordon by Dr Hook and The Medicine Show is a good example, I guess.

Title: Re: Odd, weird, disturbing, or downright \ Post by: Jay on June 17, 2011, 08:31:38 PM Wow. :o Yeah, that's exactly what I'm looking for. ;D Does anybody else have any suggestions? I guess Lola by The Kinks would count. I'd Love Just Once To See You is another one. But those two are "humorous", rather than "shocking".

Riz Ortolani's theme from Cannibal Holocaust. Not so much disturbing as it is nauseating. Best seen in context with the film but it can stand on its own. Title: Re: Odd, weird, disturbing, or downright \ Post by: Jason on June 18, 2011, 03:13:14 PM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IjgRzDEc3M

Apocalypse Now, Andrei Rublev, and Maîtresse are three art movies that come to mind that found some trouble over segments with animal violence. Granted, the latter two were victims of more scrutiny, mainly because they weren't American films and the criticisms came largely from Americans (although Maîtresse was severely cut in the UK and not the USA). It should be noted that Andrei Rublev is probably one of the two or three best movies to come out of the former Soviet Union. I don't think he ever accepted any kind of bribe...the American "justice system" ate him up and spit him out. Can't believe I missed this reference...I think there is some misinformation about the R. Budd Dwyer clip which I hope my memory allows me to recall! :-D I lived outside of Philly so WPVI Channel 6 "Action News" was the go-to station for news. If I remember, this press conference happened during the winter, and school had been closed due to weather that day, so we were all home. The TV happened to be on as they showed the press conference, where Dwyer pulled out the envelope and started waving the gun. The first time I recall seeing it broadcast - whether it was live or not, I don't know - they cut to a blank screen immediately after the gun went off, but the shot was shown for that split-second and I saw it once until YouTube picked it up decades later. This was broadcast during the day. Any airings of the clip later than that on the evening news showed it right up to the point where he raises the gun, and they cut it off before you hear the shot. It was everything we were talking about in school after that, still quite a shock and a sad story obviously. But I think to clarify, if one station had carried it live as the story was developing at Dwyer's press conference, the gunshot itself wasn't shown on the newscasts after that. At least to my memory, as someone who saw Channel 6's coverage that day we just happened to be home from school, that's how the local broadcasts covered it. I don't know what the Harrisburg area stations did with the story. Corrections welcome of course! The footage I saw on the news the day of the event was shot from the front and showed him putting the gun in his mouth, then abruptly cut to the same shot of the podium after he fell. About 14 years ago I saw the unedited footage shot by the cameraman who was to Dwyer's right. After the trigger was pulled, Dwyer's body fell to the right of the podium and was somewhat supported by it. The camerman tilted the camera down and, instinctively, zoomed in to refocus then pulled back to re-frame the shot. By this point, there was a copious amount of blood pouring from Mr. Dwyer's nose and mouth. I believe this is the footage that the band Filter saw that inspired their song "Hey Man, Nice Shot". The title seems to be a comment on the cameraman's covering the action as professionally as possible in the face of a horrible unexpected tragedy. The longer unedited footage made the rounds after the incident and took on a life of its own, definitely. I remember seeing it offered for sale and on trading lists (how bizarre) before the internet made it available. It was a press conference so obviously there were at least 3 Harrisburg stations there, at least 3 Philly stations there, and various others. So whichever station had the most loose control over their tape archives might have been how the unedited version leaked. I know I've heard the claim that Channel 6 showed the shooting on their newscasts before, and it was a bit of an urban legend, but I can vouch for the fact it was only shown once, and for a split-second, and everything after that was edited, and the newscasts also started giving a "graphic content" warning before showing even what little they showed. The Wikipedia entry notes that the Channel 6 broadcast was the source of the version going around on the internet, and that several other stations played the footage up to Mr. Dwyer putting the gun in his mouth and then cut off the tape or froze the frame and kept the audio running uncensored.

Something that seems to be overlooked about Mr. Dwyer was that he committed suicide so that his family would be able to keep his pension. Not that suicide ever makes sense but it makes financial sense. Thing is, he read only half of his prepared speech that morning right before he shot himself. The unread portion was recovered; it's on the Wikipedia article linked a few posts up. He said quite clearly in the unread portion that he planned his death. The headshot in real life is so different than Hollywood makes it out to be.As horrifying as it was to watch, the events behind it are even worse. Here was a man ruined by allegations that were unproven; was trying desperately to clear his name, and it seemed to him that no matter what he was screwed. Imagine knowing you're innocent of something and there is absolutely no way to prove it. The man killed himself so his wife could get survivor's benefits, since defense costs had bankrupted them. THAT right there is truly horrifying, as I know all too well what it is like to be trapped in a situation with no way out. There was a documentary in the 1990's in the UK called Executions. There's one bit I'll never forget. You see a guy tied and then shot by firing squad. A bullet hits him full on in the face from a couple of meters. It's not pretty. You can find it on youtube. Be warned it makes Budd Dywer's death look like a PG-13 movie by comparison, IT'S THAT GRIM!!! On the surface it's just a fairly light weight pop song, but if you really pay attention, there is something very weird and almost forboding about it. I don't know if it's the chords, or maybe the way brian sings it, but something about it doesn't sit right with me.

Everyone needs to hear Philosophy of the World at least once in their lives. As for Joe Meek, he certainly ending up in some weird (musical) places at times. The title? Her delivery? The lyrics (reproduced at the YouTube link) are plain bizarre.
