Title: What's the best Beach Boys website?
Post by: punkinhead on May 20, 2011, 08:58:33 AM
Sure, some may say this site, but what I'm getting at is what's the best site to get information?
Either on updates or research?
Tie for #1 would be AGD's site, I almost forgot to mention it but I haven't checked it out in sometime as it doesn't update as much as BB.com and I often look up lyrics on Surfermoon.com....(Sorry Mr. Doe, it wasn't on purpose, I love love love your site! Hell, I have half of it printed out for my Beach Boys Files.)

I'm gonna throw Surfermoon.com/what used to be Cabinessence.com....anyone know why that changed?

And prolly #2 would be BeachBoys.com....even though some of the stuff is reviews/opinions, it's still a lot of great info with a lot of pics.

What's your favs?

For CORRECT information on the Beach Boys nothing comes close to http://www.esquarterly.com/bellagio/index.html

Smiley Smile is the best message board

The best detailed session info is here http://www.beachboysarchives.com/

It's the site that started out with very indepth information about the sessions for Today! and Summer Days, right?

Not that this helps your search, but I will have to say this site.

Jon Stebbins ^, Ed Roach, Pet Ames Carlin, Carrie Marks, Alan Boyd, Mark Linett, Steven Desper, etc etc, frequent this place and give a lot of good insightful information.

The search feature on this site is great - I can search for exotica music or recording equipment used for Pet Sounds - and I get pages and pages of information.

And we have a system of checks and balances (AGD and other scholars are always quick to point out misinformation).

There are places that possibly have a more concise and organized information on the Beach Boys - but this place is great for digging deeper into that information.

Actually, it gets updated every time there's a release (discog/charts), every time something happens (timeline), every time Brian tours (Britour) and maybe once a week in gigs & sessions (Ian sends me constant additions, corrections and deletions)... and once in a blue moon when I have a bright idea for another page (last one was a Jan & Dean discog 1958-68)... but agreed it's pretty subtle and easily missed: all the major legwork was done back in the early 2000s.  :)

again, Sorry, I didn't realize that it got updated that much!
now we know!

Don't know how many of you know about this one, but it's really good, and a pleasure to look at:

Back Through The Opera Glass (http://www.pipeline-operaglass.moonfruit.com/#)

Also this one, for geeks like me, is just dandy:

Eric Anniversario's set list archive (http://members.tripod.com/~fun_fun_fun/setlists.html)

Craig's annotated sessions site is just outstanding:

Beach Boys Archives (http://www.beachboysarchives.com/page1)

Used to be a great site called Los Angeles Historian, that had a ton of cool photos of BB/related sites in LA, but it's dumped all the BB content. :-(

This one's fun to browse:

Disk Tracy's BB memorabilia site (http://www.sonic.net/~dsktracy/bbstuff/bbstuff.html)

And finally, this one ain't too shabby either. Does what it says on the label:

Bellagio 10452 (http://www.esquarterly.com/bellagio/)

Personally, I like
www.BeachBoysBand.net (http://www.BeachBoysBand.net)
for up to date information on releases & tour dates
by The Beach Boys and the touring band members.
  ;)

+1

Or at least it would have been (still could be?) if the original plans ever came to fruition.

Place to laugh hysterically at the Beach Boys was a site called the many (mis) adventures of the beach boys. There is still plenty of stuff left in internet archive

I like surfermoon.com but the album and track archives are woefully incomplete, there are no entries for the following - Endless Harmony Soundtrack, Hawthorne C.A., Al Jardine Family & Friends Live In Las Vegas, Songs From Here And Back, Pacific Ocean Blue Legacy Edition & A Postcard From California and yet That Lucky Old Sun & Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin have been added, very strange.

I concur!

I used to love their essay section, up until they stopped updating.

I love the format of the Surfermoon track/album archives with the notes on each track plus the reviews of each album...but it is a shame it is incomplete.

Also, when I was first a fan I paid a lot of attention to how they rated albums and I think they were pretty accurate and fair, but then they recently gave TLOS and BWRG 10/10 and 9/10 which is perhaps a bit much when Holland is 7.5/10 for instance.

Giving GIOMH an 8 out of 10 and comparing it to God Only Knows is borderline certifiable, really.

Another thing about my printing to make my own personal files of stuff (continued from another thread or two), a lot the stuff I printed out are dead links now

Also, I may have missed it, but did Mtvernonandfairway.de get mentioned? I think that was the site.
There was also Nearestfarawayplace.com I believe...one of the two sites had the pic/shot from the MIU cover on their opening page....I know both sites had some good lists to print out, different discographies of some sort, can't remember which was which.

I've counted nearly 80 tracks that are missing from the archive, might do them myself & email them to whoever runs the site

it'd also be nice if the bootleg section and writings section were updated.

On the periphery of BBs related sites, though he did write some very nice lyrics for a certain project soon to be released.
