Title: Cool version of Surfs Up
Post by: Iron Horse-Apples on April 30, 2011, 03:32:41 AM
Has anyone heard this?

I love the way it starts with the actual Smile outakes, and the second section blows me away every time.  Did this guy have access to certain tapes? Probably not, but it's nice to hear a cover done a bit differently.

Cheers, looking forward the real thing thoiugh.

He sure had access to a session tape that's been doing the rounds since the late 70s.  ;D

Thanks for pointing this one out - it's a very nice treatment. Some neat ideas in there.

Very cool!

Sounds like something Luther might do.

Interesting post from the artist on his website forum:

"Hello Ham Mode

Sorry I'm late getting back to you, I've actually been away on holiday, and had no internet access (which was actually quite liberating)
I'm really glad you liked Surfs Up, that was done for a Brain Wilson tribute album some years back now.
I would love to have been involved with SMiLE, but I am persona non grata within the Wilson camp now for daring to suggest I could do some arranging
for them. Whoever does the strings and horns does not understand Brian's music, which is all about counterpoint. The 67' SMiLE Surfs Up would have been amazing, but I think it is one of the low points on the released version.

My new album is here, well, it's being released one track at a time. As I'm sure you have read it is a jigsaw puzzle, to be spread over three albums, you can read about it all on the new albums page

I hope you enjoy the first song

Regards, Stephen"

I really enjoyed that, an interesting approach with some great arranging touches.  Very creative and well-done!

Really like what he did with the 2nd movement. I could see Brian doing something similar.
