Films of the Beach Boys and Friends By Shaun Brady For anyone with an interest in the Beach Boys beyond simply relaxing to their summer-defining tunes down the shore, it doesn't take long to realize that the band's reality had precious little in common with their fun 'n' sun image. Turns out that behind those heavenly harmonies was plenty of hell, from Murry Wilson's terrorizing of his sons to discord sown between Brian Wilson's eccentric genius and his bandmates' rock-star lifestyles. Jay Schwartz's latest Secret Cinema program, A Walk on the Soft Side: Films of the Beach Boys and Friends, offers a pair of rarely seen films from the band's declining years along with the usual host of shorts and oddities, all based around a "soft rock" theme. The program — with special guest Dennis Diken, Smithereens drummer/pop historian/Beach Boys expert, introducing each film and answering audience questions — includes a bizarre-sounding, Lorne Michaels-produced 1976 TV special meant to publicize Brian's return to the group after his notorious mental breakdown, an educational short featuring Al Jardine and Johnny "Secret Agent Man" Rivers, and a clip from a TV special featuring The Fifth Dimension. I'm sure the first DVD copy I had was a US release, twinned with the Don Was Brian Wilson documentary I Just Wasn''t Made For These Times (which in turn I don't think has had a UK DVD release... possibly cos they couldn't source any blank B&W DVDs to burn it on to).
