Title: The Honeys - It's Like Heaven
Post by: Loaf on March 22, 2011, 05:47:17 PM
This album was released in the 80s and is an odds n ends collection of tracks from various recording sessions, but it seems like most tracks have some kind of Brian-influence.

The version of Do Ya is great, a real 70s Brian kind of version of the Spector girl groups. It's a shame he didn't do more stuff like this. Brian should revisit this song nowadays. I didn't know this had a Brian/Diane/Marilyn credit.

Romeo and Juliet is also great. This sounds like it could have been a big hit in the early 80s. The album credit says produced and arranged by Brian Wilson...

But the version of Slip on Through? It's pretty good in places but it gets embarrassing ... She just can't hit those notes.

Does anyone have any more info on these songs? Some, like Snowflakes, sound like they could be outtakes from the 1973 album. And how old is Sweet Sunday Kind of Love? It kind of sounds better from a female perspective. Was it written for the Honeys? The Mike Love track She's Just Out to Get You appeared on a Celebration album in 1979, Sweet Sunday Kind of Love was out in 1978 on MIU, so when were these recorded? I thought Brian didn't do anything with Marilyn after their 1973 album?

This is a great LP. Snowflakes is from 1973. Most of the album was done in 1977-78 and Brian did have a lot to do with most of them.

Brian produced also a version of "Don't be cruel" for the Honeys which is very nice. Since it was done shortly after Elvis' death I wonder if it was thought as a tribute.
BTW Love the original "Do ya". In comparison the version on Caroline Now sucks imo

Almost all the tracks on the album were included on the excellent 1992 Honey's Capitol Collectors Series CD, along with the released 60's Honeys sides and one previously unreleased one ("Come To Me"). However, it has to be said that some of the recording info is highly questionable: 10/14/77 for "Had To Phone Ya" ?  Don't think so...

Oh yeah Don't Be Cruel is on there. Not great but a lot better then some of the oldies the Beach Boys were cutting. I would guess it was done shortly after Elvis died.

With the sole exception of "Snowflakes", everything on It's Like Heaven was included on the 1992 Capitol Honeys CD.

I thought that was the "In Ecstasy" LP that Marilyn owns the rights too.

I haven't got the credits in front of me right now, but my memory says October '77 (which would be the same time the CBS-special was shown) or sometime early '78. I could be totally wrong with that of course.

Googling it, I came up with a 1986 release date on Ocean Records; is that a reissue then?
They were wearing really cool ,almost matching, boots in the cover shot.   ::)

Essential Honeys: The Capitol Collector's Series CD from 1992 and "The Honeys Collection" by Collector's Choice Music from 2001.

My personal favorite: The Beach Boys Collector's Series Honeys box (vinyl) with poster and button. One of the cuts on there called "Little Dirt Bike" wasn't on any released Honeys comp anywhere else.

Did your Honeys box come with the extra envelope?  ( mine didn't)

That's the original, and only, release - it was essentially a Swedish Honeys fan club project, with Marilyn's full involvement. The disc itself is bubblegum pink !

The cover was shot at Marilyn's (then) house in Encino. She had the sandbox piano there: I've played "Caroline, No" on it. Very, very badly.

Yes, even though it was a publishing demo, it should have been on the Collectors Choice comp instead of the demo that was included.

On a more serious note: if you see it, do buy it. It's definitely worth owning it, if only for "It's Like Heaven" and "Snowflakes"

That's Barnaby Bear, btw (and that is probably my most utterly obscure piece of BB/related trivia).

The Runnig Away From Love /bw/ Go Away Boy 45 (RNOR 018) is a rarity as well. (admitted: that's from another Honeys-album)

I don't know, I found it rather unexciting... I dig the cover art, though. Nice colours.

I like the album as I said and yes most of it has been reissued but not on vinyl. Buy it it's much better then the Rhino one.

Whoa, I wish I had that one!  I have an acetate for "When I Think About You"; I keep it inside the Honeys Box, so as not to forget where I put it

Only Four years?  I don't think I've played it since the first time when I got it!

No idea - but when the girls signed it for me, Marilyn also singed it from "Barnaby Bear".

I'm a vinyl nut so I do play them quite a bit. That said I tend to play the Capitol years box (fake stereo notwitstanding) or the 45's for The Honey's because they sound better.

I have SNOWFLAKES on a boot.  I had been thinking it was American Spring............
I have to admit I don't have a strong background on Honeys or Am Spring.    I have that boot and the Collectors Choice Honeys CD from 2001.

Someone care to give a brief description/History?

It is Spring. All of that album is really they just used the Honey's name.
