Title: A Little Competition for the Smile Release
Post by: desmondo on March 20, 2011, 05:25:06 AM
OK guys - just a bit of fun.

Thought it might be fun to try and predict the "album" that will come out on CD1 - store them and try and get a prize for the winner.

Here is mine - the tracks are essentially the BWPS arrangements - I am not predicting fully finished tracks, flown in vocals or what ever just the running order and a structure of each song.

Its based on the 12 track list, 40 mins and the way BWPS turned out apart from the obvious

Intro - Prayer/Gee
1. Do You Like Worms
2. Heroes and Villains>
3. Great Shape/Barnyard>
4. Old Master Painter/Sunshine
5. Cabinessence
6. Wonderful
7. Child Is Father of the Man
8. Surf's Up
9. Vega-Tables
10. Wind Chimes
11. The Elements - Mrs O'Leary's Cow/IWBA/Friday Night/I Love To Say Dada
12. Good Vibrations

Swap 'Good Vibrations' and 'Surf's Up' around and I'll bet that's a winner.

You know, I always thought that Wind Chimes really sounded out of place on SMiLE. I know it's a SMiLE track-the first one worked on, in fact (besides the May H&V)-it just doesn't seem to fit in lyrically with the rest of the album.

Know what you mean - its an easy candidate for Air as a "We need an Air - Wind Chimes fits" type scenario

If you think of SMiLE as a complete song or operetta (which is the way I think of it) Wind Chimes is sort of the bridge where you introduce "new melodic and lyrical content...building a new dimension...before you reel them back" (from ehow song-writing bridge) and I have always though that the music from the real "wind chimes" comes from the actual wind direction, speed, etc., and is nature beyond the control of humans.  It is sort of placed on the old Smiley in the order where the "bridge" might actually be...#8 of #11...

It seems also to be one of the more abstract songs on the original Smiley...and probably open to any number of figurative or literal interpretations...It is really exciting for new tracks to be released as a body of work.   ;)

Not what I want.  (That would include no "Gee" and a reconstruction of "The Elements", among other things).  Not exactly what I think (just because I have the feeling they're going to close it with "Good Vibrations") but my "guess", for the sake of this thread.

Prayer/Gee
Heroes And Villains
Do You Like Worms
Barnyard (Barnyard/Old Master Painter/Sunshine)
Cabin Essence
Wonderful
Look/Child Is Father of the Man
You're Welcome
Good Vibrations
I'm In Great Shape (Great shape/IWBA/Workshop)
Vega-Tables
Holidays
Love To Say Dada
Surf's Up

4. Barnyard
5. The Old Master Painter (+ My Only Sunshine)

I hope for some new Brian Wilson piano demos in this set. Most likely there aren't any out there but it'd be awesome to hear. The coolest thing would be to hear Brian with his piano playing and singing songs like Wind Chimes, before they were studio recorded.   8)

Oh wow I would give my right ear to hear more Brian Wilson piano demos. Can you imagine a piano demo of God Only Knows? I never even considered how great Smile piano demos could be. I guess we have the humble harv one and surf's up, but to hear a piano demo of wonderful, or the home on the range section of cabinessence!

Or Denny's legendary piano demo of Child is Father of the Man, as mentioned in LLVS...

I got a sneak preview of one of the tracks the previous night when Dennis played me a piano version of one track, 'Child Of The Man', a cowboy song, and then gave me the throwaway line of the year-'And this is a prayer I'm working on for it!!'

I honestly believe Surf's Up will close out Smile!

It was always supposed to but the 2004 version lacked the proper emotion. No jab at Brian or his band, but the younger Brian just sounded........ different, and the song felt like the close of something!

....... Or maybe that's just because I'm so used to it closing out the Surf's Up album.

Just so you know I intend to contribute to this thread the more I work out the list in my head (I've got a Microsoft Word doc on it in the meantime where I'm juggling around pieces).

I would like to add here though that Child is Father of the Man is one of the biggest puzzlers of this album. Surely there are lyrics that were written for it - the title smacks of Parks (the allusion to Wordsworth), it has a structure that blatantly appears to require lead vocals, and it appeared to come very early on in the Smile process before things got messy. And yet there is not a single trace of the lyrics apart from the title! You would think that someone would have at least retained a copy of the lyrics. The Frank Holmes artwork that gave us the original lyrics for Do You Like Worms, how come it doesn't exist for this song?

The song seems to be the one major piece that has slipped through the grid, so to speak.

Also, it's been years since I read the Siegel piece, but is it possible when Denny sings the cowboy song called "Child of the Man" (rather than Child is Father of the Man) that he isn't singing: "My children were raised you know they suddenly rised, they started slow long ago, head to toe, healthy wealthy and wise".  Or would Siegel know that was "Heroes and Villains". I realize, of course, that would be a huge coincidence.

I have three hopes:

1) New unbooted material

2) They include "You're Welcome" as part of the normal line-up (maybe "side 2" intro ?)

3) They include the long "Vegetables" ending part that I think Mark Linett added to Vegetables on the box-set.

I've mentioned this elsewhere, but the verse melody of "Child..." has the same rhythm as the classic cowboy song "Happy Trails" albeit slowed way down. It's possible that when played on the piano (perhaps at a faster tempo), it could be mistaken for a "cowboy" song. Ultimately, it could just be bad reporting on Siegel's part.
