Title: Re: Dixie Chick Debuts Beach Boy Cover Post by: B-Rex on March 15, 2011, 10:38:45 AM Very nice cover. It's a mix of country and pop. They kept it simple with a fine backing outro. They didn't try to out BB the BBs...wise move.
Title: Re: Dixie Chick Debuts Beach Boy Cover Post by: Shady on March 15, 2011, 10:51:47 AM One of the better GOK covers I've ever heard.
Better than Mandy Moore's anyway Title: Re: Dixie Chick Debuts Beach Boy Cover Post by: Ron on March 15, 2011, 11:19:28 AM Very nice cover. It's a mix of country and pop. They kept it simple with a fine backing outro. They didn't try to out BB the BBs...wise move. Nope. There's no country in there, since she doesn't want to be labeled as a country singer. :) You'll have to ask her what the mix is of. Title: Re: Dixie Chick Debuts Beach Boy Cover Post by: OneEar/OneEye on March 15, 2011, 11:56:34 AM I like her version a lot, but with so many other great and less known (and under-appreciated) songs in the Beach Boys catalog it's kind of a shame people seem to always cover the same few.
Title: Re: Dixie Chick Debuts Beach Boy Cover Post by: Chris Brown on March 15, 2011, 01:05:35 PM I heard a bit of this on TV the other day. Not bad at all - it's hard to go too wrong with such great material to work with.

I second you on that Paul. But since Big Love used GOK as theme song for the series the choice of cover was easy :) The version was one of the better as it didn't try to copy BB version as someone already stated! //RD Title: Re: Dixie Chick Debuts Beach Boy Cover Post by: bgas on March 15, 2011, 04:03:03 PM uhhh, it's ok. Nothing really special that I hear. definitely not country, it's all a pop song. which isn't a bad thing at all. Reading the description, I kept waiting for the "bleating organs" but what I heard was, I thought, Guitar all the way....
Title: Re: Dixie Chick Debuts Beach Boy Cover Post by: rab2591 on March 15, 2011, 06:11:38 PM I think I only like it because it is one of the few Beach Boys covers that didn't make me cringe. I mean, it is good, but how many of us are going to download this song from itunes? Is it really that good?

There. I said it. Title: Re: Dixie Chick Debuts Beach Boy Cover Post by: pancakerecords on March 16, 2011, 06:31:41 PM I downloaded it. And I like it. So there.
Title: Re: Dixie Chick Debuts Beach Boy Cover Post by: Dutchie on March 17, 2011, 04:02:21 AM One of the better re-recordings i heard. She has a amazing voice and i like the pedal steel guitar in the song.
Title: Re: Dixie Chick Debuts Beach Boy Cover Post by: JaredLekites on March 17, 2011, 07:29:06 AM I really like the Dixie Chicks. They are of a dying breed in country/folk music, unfortunately. Their last couple of albums have been really good, far surpassing Nashville's usual standards of 2 big singles and a bunch of filler. The three of them are multi-instrumentalists and their harmonies are quite pretty. Their songwriting skills are not too shabby, either so I don't know why they chose to cover "God Only Knows" though I'm not displeased with their cover version.
Natalie Maines did a great collaboration with Neil Diamond called "Another Day That Time Forgot" which is worth seeking out. |
