Today's song is Don't Go Near The Water.
Didn't like it for decades but I do now. Side one of
Surf's Up!
is closer to what was happening at the time than side two, which is in a field of one. I've since caught up with side one----or rather it's caught up with me.
Five.

Today's song could be 5 if they got rid of that pseudo-mystic highly disinteresting intro/ recurring riff which really drags it. 3.5 rounded to 4.

Today's song is Long Promised Road.
This is the track that got me into side one of
Surf's Up.
Of its many magical moments, the most magical for me is at the words "long promised road", when that synth texture kicks in.
If I remember correctly, SWD has pointed out that the backing vocals are Al triple-tracked.
And if anything deserves a five, it's this stunning Carl composition.

It's goofy fun song with cool effects. Double it with Al (& Brian) deliberately doing funny voice.

The sonic effects used on this track are great. However, the subject matter makes me skip this one if I’m ever playing the album in front of people. Even when I’m alone listening to this I don’t want to think about feet.
Makes me wish that Capitol would release a “Alternate Surf’s Up” with Dennis’ contributions. Take off ‘Take A Load Off Your Feet’ and ‘Student Demonstation Time’ and you’ve got a really really solid album...makes me wonder how much more popular this album would’ve been without its weirder tracks.

I'd rather not think about feet either. That said, whenever I'm in a certain type of shop I invariably find myself looking out for avocado cream.
In a way, the album's weirder tracks balance out the epic ones rather nicely. And "Feet" is about as weird as it gets.

Heard Bruce sing this at the BB concert last year. He can still do it, you know. But nothing beats the version on
Surf's Up.

"Disney Girls" - dislike it immensely. 1. That said, agree with past post that it's best in SU, sung live - inferior.

I think it’s a great song musically and lyrically, but my like of it has waned the last several years. Still, it’s a great track on this record, I give it a 4/5 (bearing in mind that it’s no where near as good as the last 3 tracks on this album).

Definitely Bruce's signature Beach Boys song. I think it thematically fits the album perfectly since Surf's Up deals with issues with the environment and turmoil on college campuses, and here's this song, longing for the good ole days.

1/5.
There is nothing interesting musically or lyrically about this song. Again, take off this and ‘Load’, replace them with Denny’s tracks and man you’ve got a killer album.
@JK, I guess you’re right these kinda balance out the serious nature of the album, but that’s like replacing ‘I Know There’s An Answer’ and ‘IJWMFTT’s’ with ‘Amusement Parks USA’ and ‘Barbara Ann’ on Pet Sounds - it may balance out the serious stuff but it weakens the album. But, given that’s what we got on Surf’s Up I think your glass-half-full approach is how we have to look at it.

To me, Student Demonstration Time is unlistenable. Such a bad song on what is otherwise a great album.

I don't think SDT is nearly as bad as it's reputation, and I don't think it weighs down the Surf's Up album nearly as much as Take a Load Off Your Feet.
I think the band sound great, and it's a rocking backing track. However, I think the siren sound effect is a little too high in the mix to the point where it's jarring.
Mike's timely lyrics are pretty clumsy, and I'd prefer a straight cover, but I think the topical nature of the lyrics fit the album.

I don’t want to offend anyone by saying this, but I’m gonna give my honest opinion on the SDT song: the whole song sounds like a joke to the point of insincerity - I don’t know what Mike’s/the guy’s intentions were with the song, and I’m not calling
them
insincere, but the song
sounds
insincere. You’ve got sirens wailing, Mike sounding like he’s yelling into a megaphone, the lyrics are pretty bad, and yet some of the lyrics are directly about an event that left 4 students shot and killed.
To me, it’s like if Coldplay were to release a song with bells, sirens, megaphones, cheesy lyrics, in the aftermath of the Charlottesville riot that left one person killed. It would be in really poor taste.
At least with ‘Take A Load Off Your Feet’ you can find sincerity in it, it’s hilarious that Brian’s biggest problem he could write about at that time was foot issues. But it’s honest in its own childlike way, even though I don’t care for the song at all.
But with SDT that backing track/effects are on par with Loop De Loop and considering the serious nature of some of the lyrics it makes me cringe whenever I hear it. And this isn’t a knock at the quality of the recording or those who worked on it, It’s problably one of those things you had to be there for to understand. But from my perspective I just don’t get it.

I can see how you might think that. I'm not so certain that the nature of the song or lyrics really reflect insincerity. I think the intention was anger at how demonstrators were treated (ie. Kent State). Honestly, I think the lyrics are somewhat poorly written (ie . "A bachelor of bullets") and can come off insincere, but I don't think that was the intent.
However, with Feet, I think the only redeeming quality of that song is that it's mercifully brief. If it wasn't good enough to appear on Sunflower, I'm not sure why they thought it was good enough to appear on Surf's Up. And the fact that it made the album while WIBNTLA languished in the vaults for over 40 years is mindblowing.
