Changing their name, and then immediately changing it back again, would have probably done more damage to their reputation than the group themselves had done up to that point in time(1969/70). That's just my opinion though.

Carnival of Sound is coming out officially this fall . . . with the "pristine quality" you're hoping for . . . and those familiar with the crappy acetate bootlegs are in for a real treat.
It's enlightening to compare what Jan Berry was working on in '67-'68, at the same time Brian Wilson was working on Smile and other material.
I'll post the specifics here when I get the OK.
M.
Is there any more word on this release? In the pipeline and on track . . . Still finalizing the liner notes . . . and photos/images have been submitted. No other specifics yet. M. Is this a vinyl only release, or will there be a CD version?

I've always assumed it's supposed to be there, bit like that 'edge-of-hearing' guitar on one fragment of "BWTL".
Are you talking about the version on the 1990 "twofer" of Smiley/Wild Honey? Can you point me to where in the recording(how many minutes, etc...) you're talking about? We're talking about the only version there is, going back to the original 1967 vinyl release... and it's clearly audible, even on a dubious UK pressing. Try listening. I think he was referring to the 2fer version of BWTL as opposed to the box set version. Thanks. I wasn't quite sure what to make of the above comment.

I now fully understand why Andrew Doe has adopted a cranky sense when it comes to repeating the same information over and over again. It's not the repeating, especially if it's a newbie asking... it's the answering questions and having your reply either dismissed or - as Jon's was - ignored. If it bothers you guys that much, then feel free to delete this thread. I already apologised.

I know that they did some aborted session work at Caribou(spelling?) Ranch in 1974. This is the time frame that I am most interested in. Brian went into the studio with them, and I think that perhaps this might have been the final Beach Boys project before Brian had his major emotional meltdown, and retreated to his bed untill Landy came into the picture in around 1976. I think that the Caribou sessions in 1974 were also the last time that Dennis's voice was still in really good shape. An outtake of "River Song" from this period shows him to still be in a very "smooth" voice.

I just noticed something about the "My Love" recording I have as bootlegged. On the bootleg version, the drums sound very different from the version issued as part of "Love Remember Me" on the POB/Babu cd. Was there more than one version of "My Love" recorded? Or is the poor sound quality playing with my ears?
Yeah, there's something 'better' in the bootlegged version. I agree. The drums on the boot version sound more "full", if that makes any sense.

Did you read my post? I already answered your question way up this thread dude. " There were multiple B sections available, Dennis had recorded several." I'm sensing Jay is not a very thorough researcher...considering his orig. post that began this thread...and now this already answered question. Take a break from the bong brother. I'm sorry, I guess I misunderstood you or something.

It's only rock and roll folks and I remember being as angry as Mike when Paul didn't show. Should Mike have said something? Well he was the only one being real. He explained later that he felt the industry had the wrong values and that the no shows pissed him off. The problem was that Mike went on way too long and said Mick Jagger wouldn't show up when he was standing a few feet away. If he hadn't been fasting maybe he could have done something that would have goten his point across without making him look foolish. Today it's just good comedy and no one was really hurt by it for long.
Although I understand the anger towards Mike for this incident, I can kind of see where he's coming from. I was only about four or five when it happened, so I don't remember it as it happened. But as a twenty four year old today, it pisses me off that Paul McCartney let petty lawsuits and fighting get in the way of things. He had a chance to bask in the glory of what was "The Beatles" with his surviving bandmates and "friends". He blew it. If anything, he should have done it for John, but that's another can of worms. What pisses me off is that he could have played with George and Ringo one last time. But he didn't, and George died before they could have reunited. Not that they would have, but you know what I mean. John Fogerty did the same with snubbing his bandmates, and a member of CCR died before they could stop fighting like two year olds, and play a kick ass concert. Thank God Led Zeppelin had the presence of mind to go out on a high note, so to speak.

I just heard this incredible track yesterday for the first time. Does anybody have any information on it? When was it recorded? Who played on it? Why wasn't it ever finished?
To answer your questions (except for the last one)...go to: www.beachboysarchives.comClick on the "Bambu" button on the left, follow the Adobe link, and scroll to page 46. That is a GREAT article. Thanks. It's a labor of love. It must have taken a long time and a lot of effort to do. As a Dennis/Beach Boy fan it's much appreciated.

As far as the "cocaine sessions" go, I think that what exists on bootleg tapes is great. I'm not saying that Brian or Dennis were all that organised, or "together", but I think what they came up with is a facinating glimpse into two very beautiful, yet fragmented minds. I think that songs like "Oh Lord" are a great example of the stuff Brian and Dennnis were capable of, away from Mike, Stan, Rocky, or any of their "minders" from the period. Yes, the drugs and booze flowed freely, TO freely, but Brian and Dennis were in their element.

Re: SMITC -- according to Alan Boyd: GRATEFUL ARE WE FOR LITTLE CHILDREN, according to Steve, was something that he had worked on with Brian back in the late 60s or early 70s. When he sang it to me, I instantly recognized the melody as what eventually became "Saturday Morning In The City." Brian has definitely ripped off Dennis (Someone to Love / San Miguel being the most blatant, albeit unreleased example), but SMITC doesn't sounds much like a Denny tune to my ears. I think that AGD once confirmed that SMITC dates back to the SMiLE period(albeit, in a very embryonic form).
