Well, I just had to start this thread. Post videos, discuss artists and songs and just enjoy the great diversity of country music.
I start with this cool song by Jessie Colter (Waylon's wife):
Maybe You Should've Been Listening

Can we get some love for Gram Parsons in this thread, or is he not hardcore Nashville/Bakersfield enough? $1000 Wedding is one of the most beautiful 70's country songs anyway, so nyah.

If he's good, he's good. Nothing else matters. Country music is about that - music.

It's nice but doesn't really impress me that much. Maybe it'll take some time.
Here's another tear jerker from Hank jr. From what I know about Hank jr, it really is hit or miss with him. He might write songs in the way Mike Love likes with mentioning as many song titles (mostly by his father) as possible or he composes narrow-minded political songs and sounds like an idiot but then he can turn around and come up with such heartfelt classics as this.

Both Gram Parsons and Michael Nesmith are trailblazers for country rock. Here's one by Papa Nez from Nevada Fighter.

Dear God no
The thing about $1000 dollar Wedding is that it's so ambiguous - is the girl dead? or did she just run off with somebody else, leaving him at the altar? What's with the third verse? It's like all the action has happened off-screen. But Rocker, I would check out both his solo records and the first Flying Burrito Brothers album, if you want to try and 'get' Gram.
Other good Gram - Hickory Wind off the Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo album. A beautiful tune.
My other 'lets go country' fix includes the beat-up Merle Haggard LP I own, Mama Tried, which is absolutely no nonsense there.

Hank Williams. All the Country you'll ever need. Seek out his Luke The Drifter stuff.

Hank was fantastic, no doubt. But it's nowhere near "all the country you'll ever need". There's too much artists that are as great as he was.
hypehat, yes, I know "Hickory wind". Thanks for the heads up. Will keep my eyes (and ears) open.
Do you know Hag's "Same train a different time" ? It's a tribute album for Jimmie Rodgers and a fantastic one I might add. He keeps very true to Jimmie's sound but still has some of his own signatures in it. Here's just one song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLMwsslLJGY&feature=related
Check the album out. It's really, really beautiful.

This is my favorite country song at the moment
Lefty Frizzell - Sick sober & sorry
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pA5Wo4o_ndk
Quote
C F
Oh sick sober and sorry
G7 C
Broke disgusted and sad
F
Sick sober and sorry
G7 C
But look at the fun that I’ve had
F
I met with a gal in a tavern
D7 G7
Oh what a beautiful dream
C F
We had three or four then had several more
G7 C
And that's when I went off my beam
Repeat #1
F
The jukebox so loudly was playing
D7 G7
Each couple having a ball
C F
But of all of them gals their sweethearts and pals
G7 C
I'll bet I'm the sickest of all
Repeat #1
F
The clock on the wall said it’s later
D7 G7
In fact it was twenty to four
C F
In spite of my pride they kicked me outside
G7 C
They locked and they bolted the door

I haven't heard very much by Lefty Frizzell yet but always wanted to look for his music because what I actually had heard sounded good. Thanks for posting this.
EDIT:
For anyone who's interested, here's part one of a BBC documentary about country music. You can also find the rest on youtube

Back to Merle Haggard's Jimmie Rodgers tribute albu, I found this clip of Hag sitting at home and playing "California blues" solo for the camera:

Yes he's certainly an enigma. I think a case could be made that he's a musical genius in a lot of ways, he suffers from the same inconsistancy some of the absolute most talented musicians did (including Brian Wilson). Some songs are just a whim he had, others are unbelievably good. His father had a similar gift.
Here's one I really like he wrote, check it out, it's a Waltz.

Couple more just for giggles.
First, some great late 80's type stuff, here's Vern Gosdin. What a voice.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdTkeqdm1QA
Next, here's some of Roger Miller's particular brand of Genius:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=No7asZj5esY
he had such a way with words, he could always get that country 'phrase' that he needed to write a hook around. The guitar is on some other level, the guy must have been an alien that played that sh*t.
Finally, here's some good 'ol Bob Wills.

Bob Willis is great and a strong influence on later Texas musicians like Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.
Do you know this Texas swing version of "Milkcow blues boogie" (later done by Elvis in a fantastic version on Sun):

BTW I just posted this in another thread but it's so good I had to post it here as well. Another great country tearjerker by the Killer:

Another great group was the Bellamy Brothers.
"Let Your Love Flow" actually hit #1 on the pop charts.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1QBKkjYm3o
That's a cooker.
Other great songs of theirs:
"Kids of the Baby Boom"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0AxCD84Rfs&fmt=18
These guys were such great songwriters. They had a LOT of songs like that last one. Kind of like the Statler brothers in that regard.
Another one I really like, but you guys probably won't, lol. This song, to me, rocks. I don't really agree with what they're saying, but I can SEE what they're saying. I just think it's great to sing a song about 'your woman' like that, warts and all. Plus their harmony is great (always was).
"Redneck Girl"

Sammy Kershaw is on another level.
"Matches" (Video got banned from CMT, lol)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNj8tNAt0Us
It's got that awesome country trick they pull where they have some big turn or twist in the meaning of the lyrics at the end of the song. This one's particularly goosebump worthy.
Again; it's corny, but I see that as a great thing, imho. The cornier the better.
The guy was born with one of the coolest country voices ever. So he's consistantly put out great songs because that voice is almost on the level of Randy Travis, or George Jones.
This one's fairly great. "Don't Go Near The Water"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_EUCOc57yA
I'd call the guy a fantastic singer.
Very old-school country song, "Vidalia"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYs8bIGseoI
The lyrics are awesomely bad. Now *THAT* Is Country. It takes a special kind of balls to sing a song like that, or write like that, and then present it as a single and make money off of it.
And just to show off how great his ballad singing is, "Love of my Life"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6zZts7HPDg
Country songs like that stand strong, imho. That's some really good stuff.
