Definitely a huge change from Pet Sounds, but packed full of beauty in it's own right. I love all the darkness, and humor.

11. Fall Breaks and Back to Winter - I like this instrumental, I just wish there was more to it than just looping.
10. Whistle In
9. Gettin' Hungry - Nice song. The choruses sound like they would fit perfectly on Wild Honey.
8. With me tonight - Carl sounds really nice here.
7. Wonderful - Really beautiful singing.
6. She's Goin' Bald - This is hilarious.
5. Vegetables - I wonder how many times Al forgot the lyrics.
4. Wind Chimes - I really like this stripped down version. Gotta love that whispering wind part. So pretty.
3. Little Pad - Really love this song. I never knew humming could be so beautiful. These guys must like it too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXa2wyNZoK0
2. Heroes and Villains - Perfection.
1. Good Vibrations - Perfection. The greatest single of all time!

I'm never sure how to describe how I feel about this album.  It may be the one I've heard the most, and I'm one to use my listens carefully.  Some of the songs are growers, like this version of Wind Chimes and Little Pad.  Others are instantly enjoyable, like Good Vibrations and Heroes and Villains.  I'm still not won over on a few tracks (the bottom four on my rankings).  It's a fascinating listen with the occasional glaring polish in contrast to the minimalism elsewhere.

Far and away my least favorite Beach Boys album (for more than one reason) but I'll play along.
I'm well aware my opinion could be seen as sacrilege to some but these are my honest to God feelings on each track.

1. Good Vibrations - an absolute masterpiece that has no place on this homespun head album.  It should have been on Smile
2. Heroes and Villains - full version should have been on Smile
3. Fall Breaks and Back to Winter (W. Woodpecker Symphony) - cool instrumental but it's no "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow"
4. Whistle In - Air?
5. Vegetables - properly finished version should have been on Smile
6. With Me Tonight - almost a song
7. She's Goin' Bald - whatever
8. Wonderful - the epitome of a "bunt instead of a grand slam"
9. Wind Chimes - creepy for creepy's sake?
10. Little Pad - pointless
11. Gettin' Hungry - atrocious

I'm wondering if a large percentage of the listening audience felt the way Phoenix described when they heard Smiley in 1967?

Good Vibrations-It's Good Vibrations...that is all
Heroes and Villains-Not the best version but still good
Little Pad-Seriously one of my favorite BB songs and the stereo version is heaven. Seriously, when the nose kazoos kick in I'm so relaxed!
Vegetables-I like the SMiLE version better but this is still cool.
With me Tonight-The stereo version of this song opened my eyes. Some amazing harmonies.
Wind Chimes-Hate most of this song but the tag saves it. Tag is much better then the SMiLE tag of the same song.
Gettin' Hungry-Nice fun little song. About it.
Whistle In-Nice little closer
She's Goin' Bald-Love the speed up in the middle but He Gives Speeches had more promise
Wonderful-Ugh. They butchered this song bad imo.
Fall Breaks and Back to Winter (Woody Woodpecker Symphony.)-One of the weaker songs.

Good LP that took me years to "get". I like the Smile recordings of Vega-Tables, Wind Chimes, and Wonderful a lot more.

This. I don't expect to like this right away. Same with SMiLE actually.

I was 12 when I first heard it so it was bizzare. Smile I liked right away though when I first heard parts of it in AAB the year before. Don't know why this one took longer to understand.

For the record, I've given this album way more chances than any album ever deserved.  Seriously, I TRIED to like it but to be honest, the ONLY song I EVER remember having to "get into" was "Do You Like Worms", tho to be fair, most of that had to do with trying to get my head around the structure of the song with only partial vocals.  I guess I'm either blessed or cursed.  Songs never "grow" on me and on the other side, the don't "get worn out", no matter how often I hear it.  The song I got closest to getting sick of was Survivor's "Eye Of The Tiger" which was #1 the week I got MTV back in the 80's and was therefore played just about every hour.  (Oh for the days when MTV played music...  Undecided )  Bottom line for me is if I have to "talk myself into certain music" it's a huge flag that I just don't enjoy it.  And while I don't want to be presumptuous, I think there's at least a CHANCE that some people wind up embracing this (or I suppose any) "cult classic" due to it's "proto-hipsterness".   Roll Eyes

Or maybe the people that like it are hip. When I first heard this album, I didn't even take the group seriously. Three songs in, and I did. It matched up with a lot of music I was particularly into then, such as The 13th Floor Elevators, Syd Barrett, etc. It is mind-damaged, melted art genius, not to be judged in the same way as anything else in the group's canon, including Smile.
