Title: Show 37: 6/24 Nikon Jones Beach Theater, Wantagh, NY
Post by: virsago on June 22, 2012, 11:17:04 PM
Surprised no one made a topic for this one yet.  Anyone else going?

Well it's two days away.  I've been trying to create the show topics on the actual day of the show to avoid a flood of "show" threads in this section.  Can't say I'm succeeding.

Pre-show excitement gets the best of us.  I don't see a problem with it, other than show topics that get made and never get updated by the creator.  I'm going to try getting the whole setlist up by the end of the show.

If they really do Our Prayer, I'd be OK with Marcella remaining at the parlor a little longer...if I had to choose...

Don't kill the messenger...John Stamos tweets he will be appearing at Jones Beach, but also that it'll be his last appearance on the tour.

I'll be there by myself, in a gold shirt with the Love You album cover on the front.

John Stamos?  One of my worst fears has been realized...  hopefully he doesn't cheese up the show too much.

Tonight's my seventh and final show of the tour. What a ride it's been. Getting pretty psyched for definitive live versions of "Steamboat," "I Wanna Cry," and "Stevie" tonight.

If so, virsago won't be visible in the group shot - because Bruce will pogo-jump in front of him in the last second.

Mike appears to be very aware of what is going in the audience (well, he always was), so maybe you will get pointed at or something.  :) On the other hand, his pointing is pretty random, it seems.

First set done....great show so far. Stamos introduces band and plays some drums. Marcella back...nice responses for Please Let Me Wonder, Disney Girls, Isn't it Time and Getcha Back...Big crowd gets into it later in the set. Brian singing well, but I'm too far away to see how engaged he is.

I'm not trying to be an "h8ter" but jesus christ Mike, let the boys change that setlist when they feel like! you had like, what, two full decades of doing what you wanted to do with what is left of this band? come on now, it won't kill anyone to sing once in a while Our Prayer, jeez.

I read Mike wasn't in favor of OP, somewhere, but didn't read he was "p's'd" when it was done in rehearsal.  When was it even done in rehearsal prior to the past couple of days?  It's ironic if true because the reason it sounds good is partly due to his bass part.  It sounds much closer to the original recording with him doing his part.  Thanks for the vid, sounds cool.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we are blessed beyond belief...it is 2012 and The Beach Boys are singing "Our Prayer" and other deep cuts in concert. And they're doing it well.  Let that really sink in and it's quite an amazing feeling.

Well, Mr. Bragg said it "was not a good day" when they rehearsed Our Prayer, not at soundcheck, but at some other time.  So, take that for what it's worth.

It must have come up somewhere besides your speaking with Nelson, though, maybe in an interview.  Maybe the Time or RS pieces.  I just would be a little curious as to what Mike's reaction would be, to the point it made a whole day bad?  It must have been pretty bad.  Cool that he could let it go, though, and let them perform it.

I just can't get the objection to "Our Prayer" when it has no Van Dyke Parks lyrics or any lyrics at all, for that matter.  Yet "Heroes & Villains" has been in the set from the beginning.  Not to mention the fact it's about a minute long. It must be those minor chords.

We should probably look into that because I can't recall Mike being pissed at anything, especially something trivial like a song choice.  The guy is a mellow dude and I doubt would waste a iota on being "pissed" at something pretty trivial.  If he was reluctant or apprehensive to do it, that is a possibility but pissed...don't know about that.

I find it somewhat interesting that a person posting here reported that at a sound check, Melinda Wilson seemed to be pacing anxiously during a run through of the ending of "Sail On, Sailor" that pitted Scott Totten's version of it versus Darian's example of how it was done on the Brian tours.  When the poster shouted out "Do it that way!" in favor of the Darian version, Melinda said "Thank you!" to the person yelling that.  It made me wonder if Melinda was getting involved in the musical creative differences between the Mike and Brian camps.

Well, to be fair, Brian doesn't need Melinda to push music choices especially when the other co-director of the group across from Scott Totten is Paul Von Mertens.  So he very much knows what Brian and the band can do and is probably the one initiating the song choices over Melinda.

That's exactly how I feel!  I was at the Atlanta show and at the time I was grateful I was catching them so early, because I felt there was a chance the wheels could fly off this whole thing and the tour wouldn't finish.

Now, it's killing me that the setlists have gotten so amazing as the tour has progressed. I would have LOVED to have seen some of the better sets.

I now think the live DVD of the tour should include a performance of every song they end up doing, even if they have to use video from a dozen different shows to make it happen.

I'd be surprised if she wasn't involved, based on what is written here on occasion.

If Mike Love is opposed to including Our Prayer in the set, he is a fool.  This concert tour is a celebration of the Beach Boys entire career, and Our Prayer is one of those rarely heard masterpieces that is proof of the artistic and vocal skill of the group.

Maybe Brian said "his family" as a ploy to keep himself off the hot seat. That way, if Mike gets mad about the setlist request Brian won't be the target of his anger.

Just got home.  It was an excellent show.  I was kind of put off at first because the beginning seemed to lack energy, but things picked up as the crowd became more into it. Disappointingly enough, the person to get the most applause was John Stamos.  Luckily, he was only limited to "Be True to Your School" (which got the most applause, somehow) and the encore.  For "Kokomo", the audience would applaud every time he appeared on the screens surrounding the stage.  Seems like the casual concertgoer has their priorities mixed up.

Highlights for me were "Please Let Me Wonder" and "Our Prayer"/"Heroes and Villains".  Brian sounded like he was channeling his old self for the beginning of "Please Let Me Wonder", but slipped back into his current voice shortly after.  Either way, it was amazing, but "Our Prayer"/"Heroes and Villains" took me by surprise.  I was hoping for "Gee" after "Our Prayer", but I'll take it.  The Dennis and Carl tributes were also great, and they work so well in the context of the concert.  I was happy to hear "Pet Sounds", but thought David could have done a better job with the lead guitar.  The spotlight was on him, and he seemed to put just the minimum amount of effort in.  Maybe this will get better as the tour goes on.  I was disappointed to not hear "This Whole World" or "Darlin'", the latter of which I was really happy to see had been added to the group's tour line-up recently.  "Marcella" was back, at least.

I think the most heartbreaking part of the show was seeing Brian in action for the first time.  He was "on" for the first set and into the show, but all of the Brian-centric songs in the second set seemed to tire him out, such that he didn't bother playing the bass he strapped on for the encore.  I didn't notice how, but during "Fun, Fun, Fun", the bass was removed and he was left awkwardly standing on the stage, waiting for the song to end.  It seems to be a miracle that he has managed to stay on the tour for so long, because you definitely get a sense of him not wanting to be there.

Overall, it was an excellent show.  They played so many songs so well that just the first set would have been enough, and it's impossible to expect Brian to be in top form at any show, so it's hard to be picky.  I hope they play here again, but I'm not holding out any hope, given the nature of the tour.

Just back as well. Such a great show. Agreed with the above. I wasn't too pleased with the quality of TWGMTR, but I think since it's newer, and not something that's been under their skin for the past 50 or so years, it just needs more time to tighten up.

Was happy for Our Prayer. I had a feeling it was coming when they played the bell tones for the opening chord, but I couldn't get my camera out fast enough. I caught it on video from the second bar in, and I kept recording through Heroes, so I'll post that up soon. I also got Getcha Back on tape with David on lead, which was pretty good. And I got Pet Sounds, because I didn't think there was a video of it yet.

I enjoyed everything. Please Let Me Wonder was a high light. Brian was doing this cool little vocal difference, can't place it right now, but it rocked. Bruce sounded great on Disney Girls, and of course Al was the most consistent. I was at the first night of the Beacon Theatre shows, so I missed Add Some music, so I was happy to hear it, but they didn't do Darlin', which I was looking forward to. Great times, great times. Wish I had money to see them in Jersey Wednesday as well, but I'll have to wait for their tour next year (yeah, I'm calling it...the tour to promote the rock and roll album...or the tour to fund new boats). Peace

The show was triumphant. I liked the mix of songs, spanning every era of their career and including a bit of '80s. I can live without "Marcella." But the band sounded polished with dense, beautiful harmonies. "Disney Girls" was show-stopping and "Heroes and Villains" was great. I was a bit worried about Brian; he looked pale and never smiled. His vocals were a bit shaky in the beginning, but he seemed to warm up. Al had a great night and "Cottonfields" was a lovely choice--as well as "Help Me Rhonda" and the other songs he sang. Mike was a bit more low key than before, but led the band well and sounded spot-on on the songs he sings - the surf and car ones, and others. I missed "Caroline, No" and "Warmth of the Sun." But it was euphoric.

Only one complaint - a bit Foskett-centric at times. Why can't Al or Bruce sing more falsettos? On "Don't Worry, Baby" the boys were like Jeffrey's backup band.

Unbelievable ! Prayer ! A little shaky but that will change the more they'll do it.

If Mike really has a problem with it, I don't understand. Smile was a recent hit album for the boys and he got his "Getcha back" in there so wtf ?

I think the most heartbreaking part of the show was seeing Brian in action for the first time.  He was "on" for the first set and into the show, but all of the Brian-centric songs in the second set seemed to tire him out, such that he didn't bother playing the bass he strapped on for the encore.  I didn't notice how, but during "Fun, Fun, Fun", the bass was removed and he was left awkwardly standing on the stage, waiting for the song to end.  It seems to be a miracle that he has managed to stay on the tour for so long, because you definitely get a sense of him not wanting to be there.

I wonder why Brian seems more miserable on this tour than his own solo tours.  He's getting a ton of love from the crowd and has to do much less than usual.  He was far more animated on his own.. rarely missed cues, etc.

It's great to see how the tour is evolving!
Brian must have had a bad day yesterday. He'll never look euphoric to be there, for sure, but given what we've come to see and know, that's no reason for us to think he wants out.

Regarding the spurious soundcheck report from above, about Mike not wanting to do Our Prayer, it must be said he has been gracious if that actually happened. It's his call, in the end, and he seems to have agreed to do songs few people imagined before the tour. In any case, and if that report is true, this is yet one more episode of the guys setting aside their egos and preferences and being team players. And that's great.

David sounds very good on getcha Back. Sounds much like Christian Love. He should sing some Beach Boys studio recordings with this commercial feel.

Oh and how about a setlist for this show as well ?

EDIT:

Is that Brian on Getcha Back setting in at 1:51 a little out of tune ?

I wonder why Brian seems more miserable on this tour than his own solo tours.

He doesn't and he isn't.

He was far more animated on his own.. rarely missed cues, etc.

He was the front man to the show. He isn't now. And he has missed more cues on many (but not all) solo gigs. That's why Foskett's there, and has been from the start.

Given that you've never seen Brian live before, I can safely say that you have no idea what you're talking about. The reason why he has stayed on the tour for so long is because he enjoys it and wants to be on it. Trust me -- Brian does not sound that good if he doesn't want to be there.

I will grant you that the bass thing is a little awkward. Brian didn't do it for the first handful of shows on this tour, either.

I have been fortunate enough to see 3 shows on this tour (prepping for my fourth and final in Stateline/Tahoe July 15), and have also seen Brian 4 times solo and once with the Boys in 1989 at the LA Coliseum. Brian has appeared to be ANYTHING but miserable on this tour. What he has appeared to be, from the eye of someone who simply has watched him from afar for many years, is Brian. This is who he is and this is what you get.  Despite this, he has actually been more engaged and engaging the times I have seen him on this tour than I had expected, particularly when the "spotlight" was on him.  AS to the reports of fighting and members being "pissed off" about the setlists, adding "Our Prayer", etc.  maybe they are, maybe they are not.  I have been to sound checks on this tour, as have many others on this board.  That qualifies me to make a statement about absolutely nothing going on behind the scenes regarding "rehearsals", song selection, etc.  The facts is, unless one is a member of the band, or the backing band, everything put out is complete speculation. We have no idea.

I do hope they do add the "James Bond" guitar riff to start off the song...that's a great intro.
