What's with all the hate for Trancendental Meditation? I think that's a cool tune.

It is. In fact I think it's the perfect closing track for the Friends album. Without it, that record would've left a totally different impression on me and as it is, it's probably my favorite album by anyone. So T.M. might not be that bad a song after all...

TM is a fun song, and lets be honest, its hard not to sing along...besides theres no sub-par song in Friends, everyone is a winner!

I too happen to love it. For all the bitching about the dissonance, that happens to be what i love the most about it! The cool thing about the song is the horns...they sound like they're playing guitar lines! Replace them with guitars, and TM would sound almost nu-metal-ish.

I only found out that there was something "wrong" with TM when I started to read the BB mailing lists and Message Boards. I never felt it was misplaced in the album.

Somebody's obviously biased against Mike.

I still hold that ALL of them were talented.

Even Bruce.  Undecided

Wow.

Another fan here. I always do my best Brian imitation and chime in with "It's good!"...That is Brian singing that part isn't it? Actually, I wish Friends had more upbeat songs like it.

Since we're discussing TM songs, I also like "The TM Song" from 15 Big Ones. To me, that song had more potential; Brian underproduced it. But it does have a nice hook to it, especially the "What time is it, how long has it been" part. It's hard to believe that whole song (all 3 parts) is only 1:38.

"Even Bruce"Huh Are you nuts? How would he be the exception of not being talented! Bruce is the most talented non-Wilson of the Beach Boys, imo. :police

I've gotta say, I think Bruce is extremely talented, too. I don't much like his writing or find him very interesting musically, but as far as singing and playing ability, he's good.

That's what I was referring to. In other words, I can't stand his style, he can be just as arrogant and smarmy as Mike (and has ADMITTED to only being in it for the money), but will admit he has a deal of talent.

While it's another thread altogether (I think literally), I don't think there's anything wrong with only being in it for the money. I sure as hell don't go to work everyday out of the joy of it all.

Well, yeah, but for me music is something sacred. Music's always been a source of pleasure...a source of healing...just something else altogether. For someone to only be in it for the money, especially with IMHO the greatest group in history, just baffles me. Even Mike, for all his faults, has had more than just simply a monetary interest in the group.

But yeah...that's a whole 'nother thread...

Well, Mike does sing that like sh*t, but that wasn't my point:  it was BW's arrangement!

Why do people hate this battle hymn so much? I like it! I like the song and I like the vocals. I think you're all just a bunch of communists! Wink

Transcendental Meditation, I like it. Especially because it comes right after "Diamond Head". Peaceful soundscape followed by a crazy rocking song about meditation. And that wordless verse, man, where they just go "aaah-aah-aah", etc, it's crazy, man, in a good way.

Yesterday was the first chance I've had to actually hear some of this track...and it's not as bad as I thought it would be! It kind of reminds me of something you would have heard coming out of those animatronic geese at Disneyland's old "America Sings" attraction (I know that's not much of an endorsement, but...).

You're hard on Still Surfin'.  Any other track of SIP I'd agree to. I like I Wanna Pick You Up.  Surely Little Tomboy's worse than that?  Wjat about Everyone's in Love With Love?  That's worse than Love is a Woman.  I wouldn't argue with the rest, though.
