10651  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Iggy, Danny, & Brian wrote what? on: January 16, 2006, 07:45:54 AM
There's also "Rollin up to heaven", the early version of what would become "Ding Dang", and I think it was recorded around '71. Someone else may have better info....

I gotta correct myself. I think I would take "Caroline No" from the '93 Paramount -show

You should hear Carl's rendition of it at Carnegie Hall on 9/24/71. Spine-tingling. Puts the Paramount show to shame.

So, where can I ?  Smiley
I know the Carnegie Hall concert from 11/23/1972, but there's no Caroline No, but a very nice GOK, but not their best rendition of that song....

Hey Katie, great post. Any chance we get to see the pictures of you & Brian...?

I think Bruce mentioned that he told Brian to put the single version on the album

GREAT BALLS OF FIRE
10656  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: What live act must you see before you die? on: January 15, 2006, 02:01:13 PM
What I would like to see is Brian, Mike, and Al go on a retreat to Al's ranch. While there, I would like them to address their issues with each other, heal some wounds, be able to laugh a little bit about the past, and walk away with some peace of mind.

Then, I would like them to call Bruce Johnston and David Marks and form a 2006 version of the Beach Boys. From there, I would like them to work on Brian's new "rock and roll" songs, with studio assistance from Darian Sahahaja and Jeff Foskett, and record a new album for the 45th Anniversary of the Beach Boys.

Finally, I would like them to call some of their old friends, from both the Beach Boys band and Brian's band, and work out a set list that is agreeable to all. Then, before I die, I'd like to see them perform - together.

Smart, like that you'll never gonna die.... Wink

Are the rough mixes anywhere to be heard? How do they sound? Any big differences to the released ones?

Brian Wilson
Jerry Lee Lewis

They did "I'm waiting for the day" live with Billy Hinsche singing lead and it sounds great, though the quality isn't the best.
Did they really perform "Don't talk"? Where can I get this?

I think you can pick almost every PS-Song from the "In Concert" album and put it on here, though "Caroline No" from Syracuse in '71 is also really, really nice. The best version of GOK is imho the one from "Live in London". But many songs were only done by Brian and his band live, I believe
10661  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Surf's Up thought up in 1963? on: January 12, 2006, 11:37:26 AM
Didn't Al Jardine say that "Heroes & Villains" was one of the first songs they sang as a group? But I think he meant it in an other way....
Anyway, if such a tape exists, it would be very interesting
10662  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: The Beach Boys In Concert on: January 11, 2006, 05:55:42 AM
A great live-album and it shows what a great rock-band the beach boys were.  Sadly there are no Dennis-songs or Dennis-leads on it. You can hear him right before "SOS" talking to the audience, same before "Surfin USA" and he sings Mike's part in the ending of "Good vibrations". That's all.....
But on the whole, it's a great album and probably the best live-album by the bbs (maybe alongside Knebworth).
10663  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Gear on: January 10, 2006, 01:12:03 PM
BTW, I would love to see the Carl Wilson "guitar player" interview.

I second that....

BTW this sounds more interesting with each new read imo. If a book, and aeijtzsche, I'd be the first one to buy it,  shouldn't happen, it would be great to have a thread or section on this board about this topic.

Wow, that's really a cool thing. Thank you so much for the information!!

James Burton also played Dobro on Cabinessence.

Are you kidding? Why don't I know about those stuff? Are you talking 'bout the Smile-version or was it overdubbed in the 20/20 sessions?
10666  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: January 10, 2006, 12:43:44 PM
@ aeijtzsche :
Thank you. Very interesting read. James Burton....hmm. As an Elvis-fanatic, it would be cool if he really played on this one while also being Elvis' lead-guitarist.
Thanks again...

Great Brian story and thank you for the answers Mr Desper!
I imagine "Sail on sailor" was done in a similar way....
10668  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: ELVIS on: January 10, 2006, 07:45:22 AM
2) Essential Elvis 5 -- Many of the 1973 Memphis sessions sounded much better stripped of overdubs.  The whole thing made me much more impressed with this period of Elvis' career.

You're so right.  That "Raised on Rock" album could have been a truly great album, but it wasn't done very well (tracklist-wise) and unfortunately Elvis sounded not very interested in some of these songs. But still "Promised Land" is one of his very best albums imho. The titletrack should have been on "Raised on Rock" and "For ol' times sake" on "Promised land", which then, of course, would have had another name....
10669  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: January 10, 2006, 07:28:47 AM
Mr Desper, I just looked into your great reports about the recordings of "Sunflower" and "Surf's up" from your book. I hope this question hasn't been already asked, but what would you say how much of the instruments (except strings and horns) were played by the Beach Boys themselves? Were there alot of studio musicians? And what about the way the individual BBs worked. I kinda doubt that Dennis had written arrangements for the musicians like Brian had(at least from what Carol Kaye said). How did they tell or show the musicians what to play? Maybe all that is answered in that book, since I'm not through yet, but these question burned so much, that I had to ask. Hope you don't mind....
10670  Smiley Smile Stuff / Other Solo Albums / Re: Looking Back With Love (ML solo) on: January 10, 2006, 04:53:47 AM
I don't hate this album.....I don't care what anyone thinks of me either for liking it.

I don't see why you shouldn't like it. If it sounds good to your ears, than it's allright, but from a musical point of view it kinda....erm...sucks. Nothing against personal taste btw
10671  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Gear on: January 10, 2006, 04:50:08 AM
Great topic. I also am very interested in the different instruments they used...
10672  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: L.A. (Light Album) on: January 09, 2006, 04:47:52 PM
I give it a 4, because I think it's really kind of an group effort. "Here comes the night" doesn't fit and the original is much better (though I like the disco-version), so they should have put on a more fitting song instead, but overall it's a real good album and the singing is good also. Only thing that isn't as good, is the sound, I think ith Stephen Desper for example they would have gotten a better sound. The released one sounds not bright enough imho
10673  Smiley Smile Stuff / 21st Century Beach Boys Albums / Re: Sounds Of Summer: The Very Best Of The Beach Boys on: January 09, 2006, 01:56:22 PM
Cool and good Best-of disc. Awful Liner Notes. I especially love the "Sights & Sounds of Summer", which comes with a DVD. I'm excited what Vol. 2 will be like, though I don't think it will climb as high in the charts if it happens to be in there at all

Probably the orst thing I've ever heard in my life. Makes M.I.U. sound like a great album....

The first and best solo-Beach-Boy-album.  Unbelievable, heavy stuff.... gets a 5
