Love the Burl Ive's version. 1949. Wow.
Three other good versions of "Ghost Riders In The Sky" are by Johnny Cash, Johnny Cash & Willie Nelson Unplugged, and a rockin' version by The Outlaws.

Johnny Cash & Willie Nelson Unplugged
Yeah, that's from VH-1's storytellers. Great show, great CD. Willie just'll blow your mind!
Here's the Highwaymen doing that song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxrJyj-h6wI
Found a full episode of the George Jones show from 1998. Episode 4, guests are Waylon Jennings, Bobby Bare and Janie Fricke
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Y9CpU5BvUM
George performs Roger Miller's "You ougtha be here with me" at the end which happens to be the title track of a recent Jones album from the 90s. It's a very, very good album. Maybe even my favorite latter day Jones albums

Speaking of Willie, here's something that may interest you.
Willie doing "I never cared for you" as a (relatively) young man
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdV8shVoYPs
Willie doing "I never cared for you" as an old man
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wb1btqod6ac
You could probably put those two recordings on a space shuttle, shoot that sh*t out into the galaxy, and if alien life found it the contrast would explain the human experience.

Mainstream country music today reeks. Let me hear the sweet sound of a steel guitar moaning behind an acoustic guitar, vocals, bass and drums and I'm happy.

Mainstream country music is weirdly fascinating to me. Kacey Musgraves' album is neat, but the bright delivery and songwriting tricks serve to obscure some quite desolate sh*t going on in the lyric. But then again, the world needs more songs like Follow Your Arrow in these strange and fearful times.

I really enjoy that album, too.
There is nothing wrong with modern country music, any more than there is anything wrong with older country music, or old or new anything else. No music of any genre is "supposed" to sound like anything. There is no reason to put those kinds of limitations on things. Instead, everyone is free to follow his arrow wherever it points.

Speaking of Ms Musgraves, an article about a Mr McAnally, who wrote 8 songs on her record. It's rather interesting, in that it poses how the hell Nashville is going to deal with modernity.
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/26/arts/music/out-and-riding-high-in-nashville.html?pagewanted=2&_r=1&hp
On another tack, I didn't think much of The Pistol Annies record - it actively irritated me, for some reason. Too many punchlines that didn't work, I reckon? It seemed too sly without actually making me go 'ah', I don't think it pulled it off. I couldn't get through it all.

I like traditional country and country rock such as Hank Williams, Merle Travis and Gram Parsons, and rockabilly material. I generally don't like the new millenium "country" stuff. Having said that, my wife insisted that I check out the Pistol Annies. Gotta say, very entertaining, a pretty cool act. Sort of Dixie Chicks meets Spice Girls. Try it just for fun.

My father would say Ronnie Milsap isn't country, but I'm sure he thinks Milsap is more country than what makes it on the radio these days. I like many of the hit songs he had in the 70s and 80s but I'm not such a fan of his albums or his more recent stuff. I know some people say that he and his like were the beginning of the death of traditional country on the charts but I grew up with him and always liked him. Anyway this is a Mickey Newbury cover and one of the best songs Milsap ever sang. If anyone posted this somewhere else in this thread, I apologize.

Not all of it reeks, maybe what you're hearing does but if you dig around a little bit there's plenty of great country music being made right now.
Here's a good one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awOgtmGmoxs
Sheryl Crow - Easy
Or if you want the traditional style, this is still about as traditional as it gets:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89naSKb6Ic4
Easton Corbin - All over the Road
George Strait just made this a #1 hit, very traditional country love song. Modern country might suck but they're still giving George #1 hits so most people must know what's up.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stBbkdhp7Y4
George Strait - "Give it All We've Got Tonight"
Here's Kacey Musgraves, I don't see how anybody could think this 'reeks', this is the type of stuff that's a hit today. How is this any different than what Dolly Parton was doing? Pretty great music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfAvRAXzOUg
Kacey Musgraves - Merry Go Round
there's a new girl around named Brandy Clark, she's incredibly talented as a songwriter. It'll be interesting to see what she does in the future.
"I Hate Stripes"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g89qCveRTDo
Such an original way of writing. Love her. Has that 70's outlaw country thing going on. She consistantly writes interesting songs, here's another one called "Pray to Jesus, Play the Lotto"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIHCP8kA8B8
If you can't get into any of that stuff, then I agree country music isn't for you... but songs and performers like this give me hope that what was so great about Country in the past is live and kicking.

BTW, I completely concur about the pistol annies. I dont' know how anybody could not like them, the harmony is so great from these girls. The absolute best.thing.about. country music right now. Beautiful in many ways.

"Boys from the South" - Pistol Annies
if you haven't been following the career and story of Miranda Lambert (lead singer) you've really missed a great American success story.
Small town girl, a little chunky... makes it to Nashville on pure talent and hard work, loses "vocalist of the year" over and over to skinnier, prettier girls... eventually wins that award and any other one you can think of, has an undeniable beauty to her, happily married to the biggest male vocalist in country music, writes hit after hit after hit... named her second album after the little town she came from, writes her own songs, etc...
Just a beautiful human being.

I played a couple gigs with a friend's band where there guitarist couldn't make it (hence me). I had to play this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXAgv665J14
Don't actually hate it as much as I did at first, but still...
It was the easiest song to learn though, with only two chords.
I don't know about that song. He's quasi-rapping simplistic, pick-up truck lyrics and the arrangement is weirdly minimal. The music video centers on three guys who just walk around and it's just... odd. Also, that "chew tobacco, chew tobacco, spit" refrain really seals the deal for me.
It's terrible.

I'll never understand why Gary Stewart doesn't get more love. Besides being, well...great, he is also the first to do the inverse of what they credit to Gram Parsons -- to bring Rock into Country. For better or worse, perhaps, but he made it work. Also, in spite of the differences in style, the most soul-baring artist this side of Brian Wilson.

This is the song he is most famous for -- somewhat just for the title -- "She's Acting Single, I'm Drinking Doubles".

Waylon and Willie knew who he was -- Willie appears on his album "Your Place or Mine" and Waylon probably heard "Ain't Living Long" from that album, which was the first released version of the Rodney Crowell classic. Gary was current with the "Outlaw" movement and lumped in with them sometimes, though he is definitely his own creature. Bob Dylan was a big fan of his also, and once tracked him down in his home state of Florida to tell him he couldn't get his music out of his mind. The Allman Brothers played with him too. Definitely a tragic figure, he committed suicide after his wife of 40 years died.
