Hi Howie I don't know about a-listers but I just checked this year's calendar and there are different artists booked on the same night, an opening act I suppose and the headliner at 8. Whether there are two a-listers or not like Al and Peter Wolf I can't say but just addressing the fact that there are two shows by different artists Tony --
I've yet to see a double A-list (e.g.) headliner booking in a single night at the Manhattan venue.
booked in one night.

Nice interview, with some good info about the tour and current relationship with the Boys....or lack there of with Love. Really looking forward to the shows; hope he comes to NJ/NY area. Sounds like the show will be similar in scope to his performance at Footprints a few years ago, which can be seen on You Tube. If so, I hope he does complete performances of the acoustic tunes, and not just fragments. Looking At Tomorrow would be great! But the story telling aspect with Q&A will be great!

I never really thought too much about that but you bring up a good point. I thought it was later in the game, after Carl passed, that Kowalski's drumming really started to go down hill. That's the only explanation I can come up with, in thinking about it, considering Carl's ''stink eye" approach for keeping the touring unit solid.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Al's solo storytellers shows in Phoenix

I don't know much about the museum venue out in Phoenix but both shows are sold out. Even if it's just small seating I still think it's a good sign to continue this small tour elsewhere in that both shows sold out....at least that's what the Museum's website says. Al, there's a great small venue in Red Bank New Jersey called the Two Rivers theater. Seats about 200 and would be a perfect setting for your story tellers show with Matt. Hope you consider it

I always wondered the same thing about Carl...did he sign off of David replacing Al, and moreso, why did he sign off on replacing tour vets Ed Carter and his former Bro in Law Billy Hinsche, who he was close with. So many unanswered questions from those last few years of Carl's as a Beach Boy. I wish someone would write a book that covered that stuff in t's true light.

I have the vigortone Edition with 16 songs some of which are really good like the spirit of rock and roll with Dylan and don't let her know she's an angel. There's some really wacky songs on here to that are clearly Landy influenced. But in general I'm really glad I have it. If nothing else for the completist factor

The expansion of the band was probably done to fill out the sound and make it more powerful. As the times changed, they needed to beef up their sound a bit. The use of 2 drummers was really done because of Dennis' erratic playing when he showed up for shows in the 80's.....and many time he didn't even show. When Denny was there however, and clean and sober they didn't need 2 drummers....he was GREAT. Problem was those other times. As far as Al's guitar, always mixed way down in the mix so he could concentrate on singing, same with Bruce. Let's remember, the Beach Boys really were a vocal band, it's what stood them apart from other bands, and when they were in their prime there were none better.

I was lucky enough to have attended 2 of the Radio City shows back in 79...I think they did 3, but might have been only the 2. I don't recall serious booing during or after HCTN Disco song, but I do remember more of a collective groan from the crowd....more like an "ugh" Regardless, they were greats shows, and I vividly remember a crocked Dennis knocking over a tray of beer very close to, and perhaps onto, Mike Love! I remember Dennis laughing...seemed to be the only member of the band who was! Typical Dennis.

I could be wrong, but I thought the contractual requirement was that there be at least 1 Wilson on stage. I remember a handful of shows when Carl left in 81 where there weren't any Wilson's on stage when Brian and Dennis didn't show up, fairly regular for Dennis at that point...I think that was where the requirement came from, and was the main reason they dragged Brian back out on the road when Carl left in 81. Poor Brian trying to sing those pristine Carl leads like Good Vibes and Don't Worry Baby. Not his best efforts for sure.
