Title: Concert posters
Post by: bgas on April 21, 2011, 05:27:08 PM
Posting one on the Surfs Up UK thread got me to looking around, so Thjought I'd post a few others.
a 1983 Carl ( straight from the telephone pole) and a 1973 BBs with nice caricatures. NOT sure if posting them here will lead to seeing replicas being sold on ebay....

Bring out the KZAP poster from Sacramento '73.  I grabbed two - one of them from a telephone pole.  Also the "In Concert" poster with the picture of The Boys from the Carl & The Passions inner sleeve.  And while you're at it, the two B & W Warners posters from '76 - the one taken on Dennis' boat/ And the "Hi, I'm Kathy" and other names to promote the "Love You" album. And the MIU and the.........poo I got so many I lost track. Time to pull 'em out. And the 4' x 4' posters of Love You and L.A. Light. And the mobiles. I'll just post links to them later.

Anybody have an extra "Summmer In Paradise" poster they can part with?  I coulda bought one SIGNED by all of the Beach Boys. It was up on the wall at Tower for $100.00. That's one I shouldn't have passed on!!

YEah, For $100 that probably would have been worth it. Did Dennis sign it too?
Regular  SIP posters without the sigs are now selling for $100 and up!!

KZAP; is that a small one?
Put some pics up here, maybe I'll remember...  but you're mixing promo AND Concert posters, eh?

Is your CATP similar to this one on her site?

http://sonic.net/~dsktracy/bbstuff/Posters,%20non-movie/pages/Pet%20Sounds-Carl%20&%20the%20Passions%20poster.html

Same picture, at least?

Thanxx for reminding me about Tracy's site. I had forgotten how many of my posters I had sent her.  were the two I posted here on the site or have I "fallen down on the job" ?

There's a few things that I don't see on the site - I should send her scans of them.

Anything REALLY cool, that you want to show here first?

Tracy is always happy to have more. I recommend everyone check out her site, and send anything she doesn't have, presuming it fits her guidelines!

A great website this is. I think I might have a few little goodies that I could add to the site as well....

Niiiice towel.  Do you guys have these?  Paid 15 bucks for them back in the 70's:

http://sonic.net/~dsktracy/bbstuff/Miscellaneous/pages/1974%20concert%20glass.html

Also have this, along with the album and blue trunks:

http://sonic.net/~dsktracy/bbstuff/Miscellaneous/pages/1986%2025th-anniversary%20Sunkist%20beach%20ball.html

And of course this one and the kite - neither of which have ever been flown:

http://sonic.net/~dsktracy/bbstuff/Miscellaneous/pages/15%20Big%20Ones%20promotional%20kite%20(1976).html

And numerous other items of crap that is currently stored away in boxes....

I've got no glass; no pump for my two giant size beach balls, but like you, plenty of other stuff.  I'll put some more up when I get a chance. ( Stuff I haven't sent Tracy)

I think I've seen a few of these pass by on Ebay once, but - no - haven't got these. There was a lot of promotional stuff for that 15BO album, wasn't it? I do have that promotional magazine lying around here.

EDIT:

It was probably the only album where they did it right. Unfortunately the record didn't deserve it. Never heard about such an amount of promo material for other albums.

Anyone could post that poster with the live color shots in hq ?

I think LA got quite some promotion as well (not just talking about the HCTN disco version)

I have that issue of Billboard. Good stuff inside.

In addition to 15 Big Ones, Love You was also highly promoted. I have a 4' x 4' poster of Love You with a styrofoam and paper backing (same for L.A. Light) Also hanging mobiles depicting the 15 Big Ones & Love You album covers, buttons with the same, posters, 15 Big Ones and Love You songbooks, kite and  frisbee for 15 Big Ones. Quite a few magazines promoting the Beach Boys came out in 1976/'77. Dennis' POB got good promotion with large posters, buttons, cups, etc.

And then we get into the 60's concert programs and the Sea Of Tunes song hits folios (especially "Guitar Sounds of The Beach Boys with Carl"). And music books up the wazoo. And the sheet music........

"The Making of the Holland Album" is one of my favorites.

There's a lot of this stuff on Tracy's site, I know. I sent her tons of sheet music, and others have sent theirs also.  Pretty good selections on memorabilia like buttons and such there.  Practically every Concert program I have is up there. Lots of posters, as can be seen.  probably I don't have much to show, except records and tapes, which Tracy doesn't do.  I 'll check the posters to see what's missing from me.
I'll post my Al Jardine Smiely Smile standup; I've heard there's also one for Mike, but I've never heard of the existence of any others. Can someone speak-up as to their existence? It would seem likely they'd have made them for all the members, don't you think?  ( The Al/Smiley shirt I posted on one of the general topic threads is from the standup)

The Al/Smiley Smile standup;  9 inches wide at the farthest spread by about 16 inches tall. Foldout support on the back, which is missing. Hard stock Black/white obviously.  Have to wonder where these were used, and why I've never seen another.  SOMEBODY has to have one/some!

It looks like Al's head was super-imposed on the picture of the shirt.  Maybe the other Beach Boys had their heads super-imposed too. Somebody who ran or worked for the fan club in 1967 would know. Send the picture to Al - see if he knows.

Maybe. Looking at it close up, it just looks like a photo taken of Al. If there were others it would be easier to check/compare.
I doubt Al remembers it, but I'll try and see.

Page 194 of LLVS (Revised Edition) features a standup of Al and Mike with the Smiley Smile LP between them.  So, was this whole thing a standup display unit or separate items cobbled together for that photo.

Thanks for posting that bgas. Surely one of the more unusual pieces of BB related promotional memorabilia.  :o

Looking at the ( really bad) pic on page 196 of the 1st edition, I'd say: it's a standup just like mine( or mine) and a Mike standup( probably the one I've heard of, but never seen) positioned in front of an LP cover , or print ad. Only because I'm not sure what sort of emblem that is at the top center of the cover.

Here's one of my posters I really like, even though it's only about half the poster( it's the important half) and I paid $10 for this beauty!  There's a pic of the whole poster on Tracy's site. ( December 28th 1962)

Not actually a poster...  it's the invitation to Donald Trumps 50th Birthday Bash:

The top as it lays flat, before you open it

and then once you pop it open/up, you're in the driver's seat! With the invitation a person received a colorful "beach" shirt, and a pair of sunglasses, neither of which I'm showing here.

and then while I'm at it, here's a beach towel from the 1979 Beach Boys Day in LA:

NOT me man; that was Smile-Holland. Talk to him...
I guess all the sixties tour books are different, maybe you should ask to get all those scanned for you too?
Then maybe throw in some scans from the 90's and 2000's?

There's a few posters of yours that I don't have, Bgas. Nice ones!  I have the press kit for Sunflower and a couple of others, but never saw that one before. Did I see the Sunflower and L.A. Light press kits earlier on this thread? Did you take them down? I thought I saw them last night.

Yeah, the 60's tour books are all different too. But I'm not a scanner type guy with a lotta time, so....

There's a few posters of yours that I don't have, Bgas. Nice ones!  I have the press kit for Sunflower and a couple of others, but never saw that one before. Did I see the Sunflower and L.A. Light press kits earlier on this thread? Did you take them down? I thought I saw them last night.

I posted pics of those two titles on the promo posters thread, but they're not press kits. ( I wish)

Ha, if only I had all those.... wish I had the 1975 one (I should give it a try on Ebay). But I do have the 76 and 77 ones (not that hard to get).
Will make some pics this week and upload them. Maybe of the 15BO magazine as well

OK, Bgas, you scanned the 1980 tour book. Now scan the insides of the 1975, 1976, 1977, and 1989 concert booklets, which are all very different.

NOT me man; that was Smile-Holland. Talk to him...
I guess all the sixties tour books are different, maybe you should ask to get all those scanned for you too?
Then maybe throw in some scans from the 90's and 2000's?
Whew!!  That'll be a lot of scanning; Hope S-H is up to the task.

What about the others? Would love to see the one of Brian....

Brian could be from the gatefold picture of the group from Spirit Of America album.

I think Rocker meant the photo that looks like the Brian pose( above). I don't see that one in SOA( at least in my copy)

Yes, that's what I meant

What fantastic picture books. They show the Beach Boys as a vital rockband. Wish I could've have some of those books. The outside is another story, I don't think the artwork is very well.
Thanks again Smile Holland !

Sloop JB, I think these last 2 tourbooks aren't that difficult to find. Check out Ebay (a search on the words "Beach", "Boys", "tour" and "book" should work)

I have two California Dream Barbies - one of them I bought for my daughter when she was 4 years old, and one I bought for myself. She won't let me have hers back! There's two variations of the box. Came with a 6" blue flexi disk of "Living Doll" by Brian Wilson and a small comic book. My California Dream Barbie gets along great with my Brian Wilson doll! There was also a "Surf 'n Shop and Hot Dog stand made for California Barbie. I think I know a little too much about this Barbie doll - do ya think?   :P

The 1975 concert program is probably my favorite. Dennis with a white cat, Brian at the piano with the Sennheiser phones on, the pictures taken presumably at Guercio's place (Netherland, Colorado?) and at Al's place in Big Sur. The supporting musicians are in there too. The group shot in front of the fireplace is one of my all-time favorites. There were 8x10 glossies made of that shot for WB promo/bios at the time. I think I picked mine up the day of the Beachago concert in Oakland, May 1975. Good stuff! ALL of those tour booklets were good stuff. I'm too lazy to scan the '86 25th Anniversary and '89 concert programs - anybody got that one? There's a couple of nice '64 concert books too - had to give up a few day's pay for one of them!

Lookit those Beach Boys playing cards - never saw that before - pretty cool!

BEAUTIFUL !!! The in-studio-shots are fantastic !! Really, someone should make a book with the programmes all together.

EDIT:
In case anybody's interested, I just saw that there are some early 60s programmes on ebay. Don't know if they are originals but they look good.
This one from '69 is one of those I've saw. It's the programme with a poster:

Rocker, that tour program was from 1968. There were two versions - one had a poster showing the Beach Boys sitting on the floor in a circle; the second had the same poster inside but  had a few extra pages, featuring "inverticubes" that folded into pyramids with pictures of each member of the band.

Here's the tour program I have from 1966:

Really? I thought this one could be found on Ebay from time to time as well. It's a UK pressing btw.
It has a nice intro on The Flame! Which makes me wonder if it's in fact 1971 (seeing the late 1970 releases on page 2).

Don't have a copy, but I was able to make scans of a copy of a good friend of mine (from the flames-website).

Actually the copies with the inverticubes have a "psychedelicized" version of the poster; sort of a Day-glo effect.

( Blowing his horn) I have one of, if not THE best, collections of BBs tour programmes, I am honored to possess them.  There are still a very few vintage ones I don't have. so please send them to me!   I'll try and get busy scanning some more for your pleasure!  ( so much drudgery)
Guess I should start at the beginning...

And when you have time (if you've got 'em) the covers and pictures inside the three Sea Of Tunes song hits folios. The blue ('64), red ('65), and yellow ('66) and the pink one ('65) Guitar Sounds of The Beach Boys with Carl on the cover.

The early autographs are VERY cool!

I'll take the May 9, '64 program from the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium! How much did that set you back, Bgas? That was a Beach Boys concert 3 months before recording the "in Concert" album at the same venue.

Ahhh Graasshopper! I don't dwell on the prices I've paid!

Some of these have cost a small fortune, some I've scored relatively cheaply, and I really don't remember what each has cost me, thjo I might have kept the receipts for some of them. Not sure where I put them tho....
Plenty more to come! The nice thing about scanning these, is seeing anew some of the extras, like the ticket stubs attached to some of them That I'd forgotten were there. Or the fan notes on the pages. or finding a page from Billboard tucked into one of the books!
So many things to show, so little time left; Be nice to be able to post most of what I have; nice also that Smile is appearing this year.

Oh well, back to work( so to speak)  If I was better at taking the pics( or had a better camera) I might not have to take them and then crop them, before I upload them, so I can copy the pictures here.  ( whine)

The last one is killer!  Capitol advertizing the Greatest Hits Vol. 1 and watch for Smile in January (67)!  Artistic and style wise, the two albums are the difference between night and day. What a shock for a fan buying BB Greatest Hits, then buying Smile (if it were released). Even coming off Pet Sounds for that matter.....

The 1975 tour program.  There's your evidence that Brian Wilson wasn't in bed the whole time between 1973 and 1976!

Thanks to a good friend of mine that owns these programs (and poster), I'm able to show some rare Dutch programs.
Be sure to thank him, and be so kind to congrat him with his birthday today  ;D

Happy Birthday GoinBald!  let's Talk!!

Is that why they have the Beach Boys Concert-cover on the front of a 1970 programme ?  ;)
But what does it have to do with SIP ?

Uh-oh, are we talking apples and oranges?
I have no idea on the 70 programme. Maybe that's the pic the promoters thought would draw the biggest crowds?

The Dennis shots in the SIP programme are included in the section " the early years", which looks like it spans until at least 1995. My favorite there, has to be the shot of Bruce just after the amputation of his legs at the knees, done especially for the dedication of the Star in the Hollywood sidewalk.

Not sure where this could go, but this is the program cover plus the page with Brian at the L.A. Pro Set Music Awards. I was at the event, but all I could remember is a friend won tickets on the radio, Dread Zeppelin was on stage, the Go-Go's sat in the row behind us, words were spoken about Frank Zappa, Brian Wilson sang California Girls, and Barbara Eden sat in our row. So I e-mailed that friend and he reminded me and he remembered Barbara Eden too. I think I still have the program in a box with the ticket stub... at any rate I noticed Ian had posted a Feb, 20th date and that is also on Andrew's site, but the program cover says the 19th. If I can get into my boxes to see if I still have the ticket stub that would verify the date. The most important thing is Barbara Eden was there.

Strange, no single pic of Carl and sans Dennis in the group photo. Yet Dennis has a single photo. Very different, but kind of like the real state of The Beach Boys in that time period.

and the other site? HATE THEM.  They keep all the rare stuff listed on their site as "Unavailable, order the next copy", simply to draw people in web-searching those items. They NEVER get any of that stuff in.   Seriously, f*** em. I put them on the same level as the ultimate bottom feeding troll, the wyzrd, or however he spells it. Buy it up cheap on ebay, then jack the price about 10 times as a relist. I hope he never sells a thing.  I hate dealers like that.  Off the soapbox now.

Sorry about the missing photo. It was the shot of Dennis and Stan together, smiling. I know Dennis and the Love brothers had some ups to go with their downs, it just seemed weird for the program to have a shot of the two of them, especially in light of what was soon to come.

Cool!  This is one where I'm pretty certain they did a program for each date by changing the venue info on the cover; everything else is the same. I've got 3 or 4 from different locations. There were posters too, using pretty much the same concept. I'll try and find/scan some of those.

The 25th Anniversary tour program I have over here is autographed by Carl himself. A best friend of mine got it signed for me.  From what I was told he was the only one doing autographs after the show. These are all great B-Gas, thank you very much for all of your time and effort in doing this. The one from PINE KNOB, brought back so many memories of a great lost venue here in Michigan.

It's awesome to see these online! It was my first tour program I ever received...10$!

I believe the owner of the site is member of this board

What about the others? Would love to see the one of Brian....

Brian could be from the gatefold picture of the group from Spirit Of America album.

I think Rocker meant the photo that looks like the Brian pose( above). I don't see that one in SOA( at least in my copy)

Yes, that's what I meant
A friend gave me this lovely item, any info on it? from the early 80s?
Worth anything?
