Title: Beach Boys Survivor #20 Winner: THIS WHOLE WORLD
Post by: pixletwin on February 11, 2014, 12:29:27 PM
Quote
Sunflower is the sixteenth studio album by American rock group The Beach Boys, their first on Reprise Records. The album reached a respectable number 29 in the UK though only achieved number 151 on the US albums chart during a four week stay, becoming the lowest charting Beach Boys album until 1978's M.I.U. Album equalled it.
The album's critical reputation has grown since its original appearance; it is notable for the emergence of significant songwriting contributions by all members of the band.

Welcome back to the a new round of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR. Remember to be respectful of others opinions. Please don't spam the thread with too much opinionating (a little is ok  ;D).... and without further ado...

I actually quite like Deirdre and to an extent, Tears In The Morning!

Tears In The Morning

It's very nicely produced, I really like the accordion, in fact on a Bruce solo album it'd probably be a highlight...

But on Sunflower it sticks out like a sore thumb and is absolutely the weak link of the album.

Tears in the Morning.  I recently re-listened to Sunflower and decided that I don't dislike the song as much as I had previously, but I still don't think it's as good as the other songs on this album.

Tears…

At My Window might not be the strongest BBs track in the world but I'd ask those who've already voted for it to listen again, closely… listen to the delivery of "the people must look like miniature toys…"; listen again to "poooof"; and especially listen again to the glorious fade… his is a song packed with intricacies, exquisities and brief brush strokes of utter genius.

But on Sunflower it sticks out like a sore thumb and is absolutely the weak link of the album.

Bruce himself has agreed with this opinion, stating that he shouldn't have made it a BB track. That being said I like it more than

Cool Cool Water--in my opinion that last 2 tracks of Sunflower are the weakest. I know I'm on an island with the Cool Cool Water track but its charm was lost on me, and I'm a SMiLE nut

My least favorite has got to be the overly saccharine "Deirdre".

More like overly the best song on the album.  :) It's got such a sweet and tender vocal, it's melodic, the sentiment is nice...I dunno, I know most here don't dig it as much as I do, but it's one of my favorite things about the whole catalog, that there's this gem sitting on Track Five of this album.

Least favorite is Cool Cool Water

I tend to think of sunflower as their most sunshine pop, kitschy album. It's very 70s and a bit sappy here and there but it has a unity to it. It's the whimsical, naively romantic flip side to the dark, morbid Surf's Up. Within this sunshine context Bruce's songs work really well for me and I enjoy them a lot. Macho rocker Got to Know the Woman sticks out like a sore thumb though so it definitely gets my first vote.

Cool, Cool Water

No contest.  Like "Give Peace A Chance" it's a chorus, not a song.  And while the Boys do a much better job here than John did there, it still doesn't work and is in this case, WAY too long.  This is a perfect example of what happens when artists try to please others, rather than themselves.  ::)

I think the album's kitschyness is probably enhanced by the shrillness of the mix. There isn't much in the way of guts in the soundscape, just a whole lotta top end. Steve Hoffman gave a pretty on point rundown last year:

Quote
This is one of those masters that the better the playback system, the worse it sounds, sad to say.

No midrange to speak of, bass severely limited with something that sounds like a CBS Laboratories Volumax 411 on stun or something and the top was boosted at least 10 db at 12k. Probably going for a certain sound on midrangy, dull speakers of the day (or maybe it was mixed on honky horn monitors with no tweeters, dunno.) Mixed on what sounds like one of those dry early solid state soulless consoles with the "look Ma, variable EQ on every channel" deals.

Remaster this baby: Find some midband, kill some top, save the planet, keep insects alive!

This Round is going to get heavy on comments.  Already up to three pages.  Woodstock's top three is not mine.  There is only one weak track on Sunflower:
.
"Tears In The Morning" gets my vote now, then I only have one more to pick on before this gets "so tough" to type in another that I may have to fold 'til the final.  We'll see.  As you Brits say, I'll have to keep a stiff upper lip and soldier on.
.
This record has one of my very favorite Dennis songs, but that is not "Forever," it's "Slip On Through."  And one of my very favorite of all Beach Boys songs, "Our Sweet Love."  It will be difficult to see them treated roughly.
But Hey, that's the way it goes when you have a catalogue like theirs.

Eh? Clear loser maybe, but I don't see such a clear winner for this album. I think it'll be a very contested vote.

Hard to think of an album with a more obvious most popular track and least popular track than "All Summer Long"

Agreed on the Dennis part. Forever is one of Dennis's and the BB's best songs, but so is Slip On Through and It's About Time, which I both prefer over Forever. Though I would still be satisfied if Forever wins. We'll see what happens

Yeah, it wouldn't be the same without it!

Seriously though, GTNTW is the weakest Denny track off Sunflower, though it's still better than a few other songs off Sunflower. Can be very repetitive at times.
But it seems as if that people around here don't really care for the BB's efforts on Hard Rock, and it's those efforts that go early. Shame, I really like those efforts

Got To Know The Woman

The lyrical content of Dennis's music is really what does him in IMO. Brian's songs are so sensitive and sweet, while Dennis's expresses the ugly, dominating side of masculine sexuality. The protagonists of Brian's songs are the quiet guys afraid to ask girls out, while the protagonists of Dennis's songs wouldn't hesitate to force women into performing.

His music sounds just like the way he looked back in the 70s; hairy and really pretty greasy. Brian's style is just more appealing in the 21st century. Dennis was a man of his times -- macho to a fault. Brian "wasn't made for his times."

I love "Deirdre," but will vote it out later.  The track I was referring to "picking on" next is "Add Some Music," a track that's great but weak in this wondrous field of beauty.  Looks like a lot of us are going to be all over the place with our votes.  "Cool Cool Water" - really?  They made this into a perfect track that was little more than a demo or section from the SMiLE sessions.
.
Don't want to waste my vote, so I'm going to shift gears into "saving" mode...and it's early in the game!
.
My "Silver Hammer" goes bang bang on:
.

Got To Know The Woman

come and do the chickun? really Dennis?

Brian was a womanizer too though he just happened to be not so open about it

I was considering going with At My Window, but it looks like Got to Know the Woman is the only realistic one this round that isn't named Deirdre.  My vote is for Got to Know the Woman, though I do like it.

At least his songs weren't about womanizing. I find Dennis's lyrics (assuming he wrote some of them) putrid.

At the same time, Brian wrote Love Is A Woman and Here Comes The Night, but at least those are quirky.

Brian also wrote Roller Skating Child ("she's a roller-skating child with a ribbon in her hair/she sets my heart beating when I see her there") and Hey Little Tomboy - what a creepy pervert!

Seriously though, like most red-blooded males Dennis loved women and got horny. I'm a Guardian-reading left-wing vegetarian, but I don't have the slightest problem with Dennis singing about girls and sex. Who are you - Mother Theresa?

Anyway, my vote goes to Add Some Music To Your Day. A fine production, with several great moments, but the whole is less than the sum of its parts. It's been described as sounding like an 'ice-cream commercial' - bit unkind, but also fairly near the mark. Without doubt, my second least favourite track on Sunflower.

I completely agree with you, most rock stars then during that time did right about the kind of stuff Denny wrote but since Denny's a BB he doesn't get a pass right?  ???

I now vote for Deidre

Sorry for the delay in the tally. Bizzy weekend.  :o

You know, by doing this, we are picking on two of the ones Brian chose to be a big part of on Sunflower.  He does a Great vocal on "Deirdre."
But, "At My Window" is Bruce's best ever vocal on a Beach Boys record.

It does, doesn't it. I think it's because I was supposed to tally on Saturday but I ended not having time until Monday. So that first round just went on and on and on.

It's About Time kicks ass!! The fade - with that awesome guitar riff and Carl's no-holds-barred singing - is just incredible! Wish it went on twice as long.

Why has It's About Time been voted off?

Both At My Window and It's About Time got the exact same number of votes - exactly 14 each.

An honest miscount I hope, Pixeltwin, and not just you opting for your own personal preference (as i notice you yourself voted for IAT in the last round).

It could be that you've counted FeelFlows two multi-coloured posts as two seperate votes, but they're not of course.

Should It's About Time be reinstated? If not, has At My Window any right to still be here?

(If possible, I'd like to officially change my vote in the previous round from Add Some Music to At My Window - thus It's About Time wins by a single vote).

I second that. It's something I've noticed here, a lot of BB's fans around here don't like their hard rock songs. Yeah, I was deeply shocked that At My Window of all songs beat It's About Time!

IMHO Slip On Through is the second-best song off Sunflower, and yeah I won't be happy one bit if it doesn't make it to the finals, but I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't.

You're quite right - It's About Time has 15, At My Window has 14.

That's a damn close vote though! You still originally miscounted (with ITA on 16 and AMW on 13) and when the vote is this tight a miscount could make all the difference. I think from now on people should only post one post per round to avoid confusion and preferably avoid writing lengthy cryptic messages. Just say what you're voting off and why.

Still sitting over in the corner...Waiting to pick on "Add Some Music To Your Day."
.
As this is only a game to me, I want my vote to count.  Two of the tracks have piled up going through the fourth turn...Big Crash!  It's Speed-Weeks folks.  Caution is Not Out!
.
Car #6 is banged-up - scrapping the wall, #11 is spinning on to the shoulder...Wait, he's got it back on to the track!
.
Looks like #6, "It's About Time" may be Out of Luck!  Photo Finish as both cars make it to the Checkered...

Your messages are really hard to read! That yellow gives me a headache.
Disney Boy (1985),  relax.  I made my vote very clear in my second post. very.  You had the opportunity to change your vote before the tally.  I waited late to vote for that very reason.  I would have joined you in voting for "Add Some Music To Your Day," IF it had the votes to go.  It didn't.  There were only two songs in that race.  I even gave a word of caution.  Caution is Not Out!
Instead, you went off on my use of color giving you headaches.  The tally was hours away.  Play the Game.  Count the Votes.  Then it would have been a tie.  Instead it was a Photo Finish...Crash.  You seem to be blaming me for breaking the tie.  Which happens often.
.
I would have put this in a PM, but you keep bringing it up in public.  Like I was the only one who voted off your favorite track.  One of my favorites is about to get bonked right quick. This is an emotional game, which is why you haven't seen me in the CATP "ST" Round much.
.
And I do usually make only one post in a round.  But, if I need to change it so my vote counts I can.  Not against the rules.
.
Sorry pixletwin for causing confusion with my "cryptic" post.  I am a NASCAR fan.
Okay, let me vote and move on.
My hammer is out for:  "Add Some Music To Your Day"

How much does it matter? If a song is not voted off by one mere vote than the odds are it's going to be voted off in the following round.

You're right Mike's Beard.  Odds are.  "At My Window" is not likely to make the finals.  In fact "It's About Time" is just as good if not better, but neither would/will get much further.  Sometimes I'm surprised though when a track like "Soulful Old Man Sunshine," or "I Do" squeeze through and make the finals.  The way the voting was going in those Rounds didn't point in that direction.
.
I've come to like this Game.  It's fun.  Nothing will change how I feel about any of the tracks.  Would also like to add that no song they recorded through 1988 makes me cringe.  Can't believe the Hate some of the tracks get.

Cool Cool Water--surprised by the votes for Slip on Through. Sunflower is the first album I heard from the BB as I started to dig "deep" into their catalogue (going beyond the greatest hits) and Slip On Through is  a great intro track and a warning that this isn't your "mother's Beach Boys"--Cool Cool Water on the other hand is a poorly formed song with basically a chorus and nothing else

I disagree with the votes offing Cool, Cool Water - it's splendid beginning to end & I don't care if it's only refrain repeating itself, so to say.
I think it's a good exercise in atmospheric vocals and sounds. But it's just not a very interesting composition.

It's honestly a tossup for me between Add Some Music and Our Sweet Love.  Both very pretty songs that are perhaps a little too pretty with Sunflower's meaty production.  These are the kinds of songs I think would sound even better on Friends, whereas some of Sunflower's other songs are perfect in the sound in which they were created.  I'll give the vote to Our Sweet Love, if only because I don't think it ever reaches the heights of Brian's section on ASM.

I am a huge Survivor fan….I must have missed the episodes where everyone clearly writes down their votes, contestants add the vote tallies, and change votes several times to ensure that a competitor that they like sticks around an extra round--even though they really want someone else gone. Really, these are for fun, and I am NOT advocating creating rules against changing votes, but really, if a track is your least fave it is your least fave--end of story. Vote it off and be done with it, don't sit there counting tallies to "save" a weak track that will ultimately go anyway. It's one thing when pixletwin wants a tie broken at the end, quite another when it is done early to "save" unworthy tracks.

Amen to that.  I always thought it was just a cool-sounding experiment that got kind of dull until the end, but thanks to Desper's study I've never listened to it the same way again.  It's a terrific track, and certainly one of the best on this album (against some pretty stiff competition).

CCW is one of the best in their entire catalogue… loved this when I first heard it through my mother's quality hi-fi when I was a kid, as the quality was startling… the hidden background noises had me gaping. It's a close relative of All This Is That, With Me Tonight, You're Welcome, Mama Says etc to my ears… effectively a chant that transports you to another place.  The repetition is deliberate.

True. Even more surprising is that 3 people (so far) would rather inexplicably vote out Forever instead of a song whose time is up, like Cool Cool Water.

And those voting against Slip On Through just don't appreciate the work put in that brilliant song like they do with others

THIS WHOLE WORLD

These are definitely the four best songs on the album - well played everyone!

I actually prefer Slip On Through to Forever (though they're both awesome) and I prefer All I Wanna Do to This Whole World (though again, both awesome).

So, This Whole World it is.

(My younger self - who had goosebumps all over when he first heard TWW, before playing it on repeat for about a day - will be turning in his grave!)

WELCOME TO THE FINAL ROUND OF BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR #20!!!

Welcome back to a new round of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR. Remember to be respectful of others opinions. Please don't spam the thread with too much opinionating (a little is ok  ;D).... and without further ado...

24 smilers voted to let this on Slip On Through.  (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE TRACK!!!

Tally on March 5th!!!

This Whole World
All I Wanna Do
Forever

Round#1 - Tears in the Morning February 13
Round#2 - Got to Know the Woman February 17
Round#3 - Deirdre February 19
Round#4 - It's About Time February 21
Round#5 - At My Window February 23
Round#6 - Our Sweet Love February 25
Round#7 - Add Some Music to Your Day February 27
Round#8 - Cool, Cool Water March 1
Round#9 - Slip on Through March 3

All I Wanna Do is probably one of my favorite vocals from mike, but I can't say it's my favorite of the remaining 3 tracks.

I love Forever. One of the most distinct Beach Boys songs. But I doesn't float my boat like my favorite remaining track...

I suppose at this point it's gotta be Forever. To me it isn't even a contest compared to the other two songs. It's Denny's God Only Knows!

BTW, I know this is supposed to be VOTE FOR YOUR FAVOURITE TRACK  ;) :lol

Do you mean 'Vote For Your Favourite Track'?

If so, my favourite is FOREVER.

All I Wanna Do is really unbelievably great - way ahead of it's time, it sounds as if it could've been recorded yesterday - and This Whole World is melodically perfect, however Forever really is a stone-cold classic! Dennis at his absolute best. Plus the song I'll be playing at my wedding next year... It truly deserves to win this round.

I love all three, they're all among my favorite Beach Boys songs. But my vote goes to:

This Whole World

I write songs myself and I have my creative ups and downs, but this is just one of those songs that always keep inspiring me. Whenever I have a writers block, or I just don't feel like writing new music, listening to these chords and melodies always gives me a goal to aim for.

It's funny, I was reading through the comments and votes and thinking about which song to vote for (it's a toss up), and I wanted to mention that It's About Time is my favorite track off of sunflower. I was very glad to see it appear twice on Made In California! Before that, it hadn't been on any compilations that I know of, except a promo compilation in 1970 or 1971. I would LOVE to hear this live one day! At an Adam Marsland show, he was taking requests, and without hesitation I requested It's About Time. Unfortunately the band hadn't played that before. I was bummed that it was voted off of here so soon.

So my vote...for more than two decades as a fan, I would never have questioned which of the 3 I liked the best...it would always have been Forever. But  This whole world has grown on me. I used to not understand why everyone made a big deal about it. I'm finally getting it. Although Forever sounds a lot better live than  This Whole World.

My vote is This Whole World, by a very slight margin.

I sang this song to my wife at our wedding, and then we danced to the original.
Fun fact: I first heard this song on "Full House" when John Stamos sang it at his character's wedding.  Separately, I loved the Beach Boys' hits.  It wasn't until years later when I ventured deeper into the BB catalog that I realized who "Forever" was originally by...boy, was I surprised! :)

Hey don't exclude me! It's About Time is a masterpiece and is easily the best song off Sunflower IMHO. It's a damn disgrace that it went so early, it may be the Beach Boy's all-time best rocker, better than even the likes of All I Want To Do and YNAMOHTSA.

And it's also a damn disgrace that Forever isn't getting as much votes as hoped for!

This is a very tough one for me.  I really love This Whole World.. so much magic happens in under 2 minutes.

However, Forever is SO pretty.  Especially the acapella version on Hawthorne.  The harmonizing bit at the end with Brian and Mike always gets me.

So anyway.. Forever gets my vote.

The 1970's...for me the last Great decade in music.  Sunflower stands with the best.  The Beach Boys, all of them, became a real band.  Together, sharing the spotlight.  With Brian in full support mode.
.
America, for all it's rallying for peace, turned a deaf ear to one of the most peaceful records.  Their loss.
.
I don't really have one favorite song.  If "Our Sweet Love" had made it to the finals, I would have picked it to win.  Carl just kept getting better and better.  I'm never going to say any male vocalist was better than Brian, but Carl was near his equal.  Dennis was at the top of his game in '69/70.  There are only a few, written or sung to match where he was at in those two years.  I like all of his tracks, "Slip On Through" the best.  All of you saying, "I'm the only one" who likes "It's About Time," or "Nobody loves the rockers but me" are just wrong.  We have a lot of members who are not playing this Survivor Game.  Where were you when I tried to get "You Need A Mess of Help to Stand Alone" to the win?  It's not as simple as that.  "Got To Know The Woman" is great too.  I think the lyrics fit the times, and the band's sense of humor.  The delivery is spot-on.
.
My favorite 70's Mike vocals are "Cool, Cool Water" and "All I Wanna Do."  Only "All This Is That" ranks as high.  The best song Bruce ever wrote, "Deirdre," and his best vocal, "At my Window" are right here.  Al is mostly in a supporting role, but would get his chance on the next record.
.
My vote for the best track that made the finals is "This Whole World"

Shame that Forever didn't win, especially after the tragedy of the Odds And Ends Part 3 round.

So now that's 2 out of 3 of the albums that Dennis dominates but didn't win. The others are 20/20 and L.A. Light Album.

Hopefully Denny will win the third one. Hopefully...

....yea.... I thought it was agreed by the majority that the 70s was considered Denny's decade (at least the first half of it).  Forever is the song that really proved that he had arrived  :-\. *shaking my head* o well

Same. But what if people would want to vote for Good Timin' instead of Denny's last masterpieces?

It's a crushing disappointment that first - Denny's Surf's Up - WIBNTLA lost to Breakaway. And now - Denny's God Only Knows - Forever lost to This Whole World!

To Retrokid, I'd say the entire 70's was Denny's decade, not just the first half. The second half had POB and his brilliant BB's vocal work on Love You and MIU, as well as Denny's Swan Songs on L.A. Light Album

Here's how I would rank Sunflower:

12: At My Window.
11: Cool, Cool Water.
10: Our Sweet Love.
9: Tears In The Morning.
8: This Whole World.
7: Got To Know The Woman.
6: Deirdre.
5: All I Wanna Do.
4: Add Some Music To Your Day.
3: Forever.
2: Slip On Through.
1: It's About Time.

Light Album

I agree but when I said the first half I meant that not only was he writing awesome songs but he was at his happiest and it showed.  By the late 70s as you know his life was taking a turn for the worst and his songs were still awesome but dark.  that's why I personally like his songs that he sings with the group more so than the songs on his solo album, even though POB was a great debut for him  :)

I suppose but really it's when the 80's hit that Denny's downfall really started. As you know, Bambu was never completed because of that.

I love both his BB's songs and Solo songs, they're both essential reasons why Denny is my favourite Beach Boy!

I hear you  :).  I like how his style is so much different than the "surf style" that Mike, Al and Bruce wanted to go with.  kind of ironic too because he was the real surfer and inspired the early hits (even though Bruce surfed too, I just can't picture him as a surfer)

Agreed 100%. Though I'm pretty sure it's not so much Al. I think he only went with it in the 70's because of money. Same with Bruce, although at least he really was a surfer along with Denny. Really it's only Mike who never wanted to stop making Surf songs (along with TM songs), and it's obvious with embarrassingly outdated songs like Goin' To The Beach.

Give me Denny's style over Mike's anyday!

Good thing this round's over... It'd be a shame for anybody to interrupt the Retro-Jar show.  ::)
