 hey hey,

I am sure this has already been done as a thread, but I am curious and I`ll ask anyhow....
What is the ratio of smile (finished product) to smileysmile fans here.....

And if you were to hazzard a  guess as to how the album were to  go.... (before you knew how the were really listed)

List them for me.....

I don't understand the first question suga, but I thought Smile would be a 7 minute version of Heroes and Villains followed by 40 minutes of incidental animal noises/farting/drugged out laughter.

I did a few of my own fanmixes before the official SMiLE came out, and I listened to as many fanmixes as I could lays hands on. I think all of us fans went, for the most part, a little too 'whole-hog' with the tracks. For example, my SMiLE ran about 8 or 9 minutes longer than BWPS and many sections were, to be immodest, quite cool. I had a great Vegetables outro with combined vox from IJWMFTT where Brian sang "Barnyard Billy loved his chickens," and like most folks mine ended with Surf's Up, the long Annie Wallace version which is a really really great version.

But in the end, I agree with almost all the choices made in the running order of BWPS. I would put in the aforementioned Barnyard Billy bit which is the fade to Vegetables, have another go at "You're Under Arrest," mix the 'do you's' in H&V a little lower, and that's about it, really. I'm sure others will disagree with me, but that is the beauty of SMiLE! It's so many things to so many people!

I like Smile more but it is a tough call: there's lotsa love in my heart for Smiley.

Since I have like literally no freaking idea what would have been on Smile, I tend to follow the back cover listing. I think at one point, those were at least the SONGS, if not the order. They seem in random order, but have you tried it that way? It does kinda work all random like that.

OOPS!
I was doing it from memory, I forgot that. Right before Chimes, like BWPS.

I believe he's there during the GOK sessions based on that, too. I'm glad you brought that up. Bri held the telephone up to the speakers so Murry could hear the Caroline session.

I dig both Smile and Smiley Smile, they're inseparable. Wonderful pieces of music.

I haven't done a fan mix in years due to my gross misappropriation of Brian Wilson's genius. I was turning 3 minute pop songs into 20 minute prog songs (my 22 minute Good Vibrations is something to be feared, it's horrible).

You haven't heard mine obviously.
"Executed with all the lightness of touch of an Orang-utang (sic) with a sledgehammer" - Andrew. G. Doe no less.

I, on the other hand, thought it was brilliant and actually quite exclusive as it uses the isolated vocals from the 45 version so nyer to Doe.

Brian called Hal Blaine 'Dad' as a nickname or a joke, for some strange reason. You can hear it in a couple of SMiLE sessions, even (CIFOTM). Doesn't mean Murry wasn't there, but I don't think he was.

Wasn't it Murry's suggestion to speed the tape up on Caroline No to make Brian sound younger? And I'm guessing he must've done that over the telephone. Neat.

That would further cement Peter Reum's theory that the Vega-Tables skits were a way for Brian to make fun of Murry using Hal Blaine.

not to be patently obvious, but *dad* is just a shortening of daddy-o. my own "dad" was in the biz and i heard it frequently as a child in the 60's. anyone remember big daddy don garlits? same idea.

I put the Lord's Prayer amen at the end based on Mike Vosse's understanding of how Brian wanted to end the album (it's in that Fusion interview, 1969)

Thanks, I remember that interview. I assume Vosse meant some kind of "Our Prayer"-reprise, as at the end of "In Blue Hawaii".

He was never specific in saying what the 'amen' would be. It could be anything, for all we know.

I think Brian calling Hal Blaine "Dad" was actually a genuine (yet cheeky) acknowledgement of Hal's fatherly influence on Brian.

My Perfect Smile:

Heroes And Villians:  Smiley Version
Vegetables:  Smiley Version
Fall Breaks
She's Goin' Bald
Little Pad
Good Vibrations
With Me Tonight
Wind Chimes: Smiley Verison
Gettin' Hungry
Wonderful:  Smiley Version
Whistle In: Smiley Version
Surf's Up:  Heretofore-thought-to-not-exist Smiley Version
