Okay, I saw Brian here in 2005, and I know I found a good parking garage near the theatre to park at. I can't remember where that was.  :lol Anybody know the best place to park?

Interesting that that Billboard article about how they booked the tour mentioned that there were a handfull of venues that the band specifically asked to be booked, and the Greek Theatre was one of them.

Looks like the group is enjoying a 3-day break just prior.

Yep, the second "Smile" tour in 2005. As I recall, the turnout was nice. It has a general admission lawn seating area, so it's always hard to tell what constitutes a "sell out." But I recall the reserved seats being filled. I think the show in 2004 at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco seemed a bit more "fancy", and that one seemed to be a hot ticket with people looking to buy tickets at the front of the venue, etc.

The Greek was packed in September of '05.  Brian and the band did the Smile material. That was back when the Tasty Brothers and Taylor Mills and The Stockholm Strings were there and people were even sitting up in the trees watching.  Brian played "Walking Down The Path of Life" and "Love and Mercy" at the end. Just fantastic! Lotta pot smoke in the air that night....

Starting out with Berkeley Free Speech and later on at People's Park
The winds of change fanned into flames, student demonstrations spark!

I think we're gonna get something from WILD HONEY. It's been neglected so far. They've had a few days rest. Mike's in charge of the set to some degree and I know he's into the album. Personally, I would prefer "Aren't You Glad" !

SouthBay,

I once spoke to Carl in the 90's about the Boys coming out for an encore and opening up with Country Air.  He loved the idea!!  I still hold out hope that the spirit of Carl will bring Country Air out during this tour.

My seat will give me dead on center view of the action!

I'll be looking for the Smiley fans!  Come and say hello!

Requests for The Greek in order of preference:

Surf's Up (It's OK to dream, eh?)
Darlin'
California Saga
I Can Hear Music

I say drop that new one they tried out in Santa Barbara (it sucks) and replace with one of the aforementioned requests.

Thanks for listening!

I'll change my vote from "Aren't You Glad" to "Country Air" with this new information.

I sent all of the Beach Boys fan letters in 1993 at age 14.  Carl was the only one to respond and sent me an autographed photo.  I hope to feel his presence at the show as well.

Serious.  I can't see how anybody liked that song live. Gotta pick something else to promote the album.  The crowd clapped at the end because it was over!

C'mon, think of a rousing Darlin' and/or California Saga!  Or even Bugged At My Ol' Man.....

I've got a feeling we'll see Darlin' at some point, it's too obvious a hit to completely exclude from the tour.

Isn't It Time, is probably here to stay. I'd imagine they'll add another one from the new album next week. Probably the one that Al sings...I forget the name now ???

I have faith we'll get California Saga before the boys leave the state...probably save it for the Hollywood Bowl tho. Darlin' is in my top 5 bb songs, I'm dying to hear that one added!

But they definitely aren't playing Friends, because the kiddie band is doing that one.

At Al's solo show at Fingerprints Records a while ago he hinted that "California Saga" might make the set on the tour.  Hopefully he can remind the band about adding it.

Dumb question: The whole "Saga" or just the (On My Way To Sunny) Californ-i-a part? Though,  I think I could probably guess the answer to that one. :)

Al, though Mike may have doubled him or sang parts of it.  I don't remember exactly, and I was focusing on Al.  Mike gave him nice introduction for the song, saying Al lived in Big Sur and was going to sing a song about California, then the intro to that part of the song started to play.

did Mike sing it or Al?

Brian opened it, then Mike & Al sort of started in unison, and Al was looking at Mike kind of funny like, "Aren't you singing this?" ... and then he sort of seemed to realize Mike didn't quite know the words beyond the first verse, so he took over.

Al said: "We figured Berkeley is the perfect place to place this ... that was from 1973, the Holland album".

Weird thing is the backdrop screen had 'jazz cigarette' smoke going through the whole song (and only this song) !

Overall: transcendent, spiritual show. I'm not 100% certain, but I think Mike was a bit choked up after 'God Only Knows' (I know I was). Definite high point for me was 'I Just Wasn't Made for These Times'. REALLY came together, everything felt just right. Highlights from the first set were "Disney Girls", "Then I Kissed Her" and "Cottonfields". I would have loved to hear "This Whole World" and "You're So Good to Me" instead of "Marcella" and "Kiss Me Baby", both of which came off a little strange. "Why Do Fools Fall in Love", "It's OK", "Betsey", "Rock & Roll Music" & "Kokomo" were the low points for me. Although BW's "find a ride" sounded pretty cool. "Dance Dance Dance" felt weird for some reason too. "God Made the Radio" (the crowd seemed really into it; it felt like a 'hit') came off much better than "Isn't it Time". "In My Room" is placed in a strange spot ... kind of jarring between "Heroes" and "All This is That".  Some TM / spiritual dialog from Mike and Al while introducing "All This is That". Crowd seemed kind of lost during this one, but I was really into it.  And Mike actually said "Berzerkely" at one point. Crowd went nuts during "Be True to Your School" when the 'Cal' logo was shown on-screen (the Greek Theater is essentially on-campus).

The 2nd set from 'Add Some Music' to 'Good Vibrations' was very special, all the way through. There was some kind of wind that came through that chilled me in such a way somewhere around 'Sail on Sailor' or 'Heroes & Villains' that I swore the tributes were coming next.  I kept looking up to the trees, plant life and the sky and feeling a sense of the group's history and what it may have felt like to be at a Beach Boys show in the '70s.

I also became saddened near the end. Because I watched all of these people, young and old, so into 'Fun Fun Fun', 'Barbara Ann', etc ... realizing that this celebratory, life-affirming thing known as an authentic Beach Boys concert is moving toward the end of it's life. And although I saw the group many times in the '90s, none of the shows ever seemed quite this magical ... I realized this is probably the first and last time I will watch and listen to the Beach Boys perform.

Are these guys reading the board and actually taking our requests?  ;D It seems that every time somebody mentions wanting to hear a song, they do it.  :)  I bet they'll do Darlin' at their next show. It would be cool if they did Big Sur, or even the entire California Saga. I might possibly sell a body part to see or hear them do Funky Pretty. They need Blondie and Ricky though.

Seeing this show made me wonder why Mike had to be such a putz about things over the years.  If he were just a little bit nicer guy, he could have gotten so much more respect instead of scorn.  He's good at what he does, which is front a rock band in concert.  His voice isn't that outstanding or anything, but he delivers the songs well, has a lot of charisma, and somehow can get a crowd going just singing a song.  He's sort of like Roger Daltrey in that way; he personifies what a more introverted songwriter was trying to convey.

Brian is almost the opposite.  He's not a good showman at all, never was, and he wasn't even the strongest singer in the band.  Carl took a lot of leads that Brian otherwise might have given himself because Carl had a sweeter vocal quality.  Then Mike did songs that fit a certain persona, and Al did the rest that Brian or Carl didn't do, or that Al himself wrote.  Brian's charisma and talent comes from writing and arranging, and knowing which voice and instrument belongs where.  While watching the show, I was thinking that Mike was excellent at getting the crowd involved (the car and surf songs got the biggest overall response), but Brian's genius gave Mike the script.  The crowd loved Brian, too, but more in a way of tribute to him and giving him respect for all that's he's accomplished.  Brian doesn't need to be out front and make big gestures to get the crowd's love and attention, though on the other hand, the reaction he gets is more subdued.  It's interesting to see that dynamic played out and it was something I enjoyed much more than any of the Brian Wilson solo shows I've seen.  The sum of the Beach Boys is greater than the parts, even Brian.

I agree with your post, but didn't you think the show really took off into another dimension with "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times"? I feel like the crowd response was overwhelming after that one.  And the performance was so perfect ... it was one of those moments that is really rare. Just captured a lot of emotion.

From where I was sitting, IJWMFTT went over well, but not overwhemingly so.  I'm not sure the crowd was that Brian Wilson-centric as one would see at a Brian Wilson solo show.  It seemed like a lot of "slice of life" type people, who were neither Brian fans or particularly big Mike-and-Bruce show partisans.  Just people who had heard of the Beach Boys and knew the big hits.  "Wouldn't It Be Nice" actually got a much more ecstatic reception than any other "Pet Sounds" song played or perhaps even the car and surf songs, probably because it's been in so many film soundtracks as well as on radio.

It was just interesting to watch the crowd and see what they liked, not from the perspective of what I liked, though I thought Brian did a great job of singing IJWMFTT.  The crowd did not seem to be into much of the deep catalog stuff and just sat there for "Marcella," and I thought Brian did a good job with that one.

yeh, i agree with you about the crowd. seemed like 'average' concert-goers. Folks seemed really pumped after the show though. My wife and I walked to the Bart back to Oakland, and I heard a bunch of people talking about how great the show was. One guy going on about how the classic bands just deliver or something like that. "Now I've just got to see the Stones too ..."

but yeh, I could have sworn they gave a standing ovation after "IJWMFTT".

O.K., I will attempt a review (at least some essentials).

The setting was spectacular, at Berkeley's Greek Theatre, where many legendary concerts have been held. Perfect evening, destiny seemed to hang in the air. First special moment was Brian's warbled intro to "Marcella", followed by a very strong vocal performance by BW of the cult favorite. Everyone was in fine voice. Mike introduced "Disney Girls" (couldn't remember which album it was on, and added that Bruce had also written I Write the Songs, but they wouldn't play it due to tome constraints) and Bruce played and sang it excellently, one of the evening's early highlights. Bruce may have been unhappy with the crowd response, commenting (or needling) inscrutably: "we're a California band" when the song ended. Please Let Me Wonder" featured a fine lead vocal from Brian and solid rendition all around. "Don't Back Down", seldom if ever heard before this tour, was the only notable entry in a series of surf songs. Scott Totten's excellent lead on "Ballad of Ol' Betsy", another obscure personal favorite, was quite enjoyable. Fine rendition of "Cottonfields" selected on this night over CA Dreaming. "California Saga" really soared, Al spot-on. Perfect night to introduce this tune to the set. I will say at this juncture that there were moments when the cumulative vibe that was starting to build after a certain sequence of quality, deep-catalog tunes was derailed by a mediocrity inserted at an inopportune time, so that what sometimes started to feel like an early '70s classic period show never had a chance to build creative momentum, whether it be "It's the Time" or whatever the 2nd new song just introduced to the set is called, or "It's O.K", there was a haunting (to me at least) sense of missed opportunity, due to the relatively conservative setlist. No "This Whole World", sorely missed. Jeff's vocal on Don't Worry Baby was serviceable but a bit bloodless, would much rather hear Brian sing it, warts & all. 4-song car medley ended the 1st half.

2nd set opened with "Add Some Music" around the piano, lovely. IJWMFTT with Pet Sounds footage onscreen, delicate and gorgeous. "Sail on Sailor" was also especially poignant on this beautiful evening, Brian struggling a bit with the vocal but valiantly soldiering on. Show-stopper IMO was "All This is That", crystal-clear and transcendent(!) Wouldn't It Be Nice" & "Sloop John B", rock-solid, with a lovely 1st verse on the latter from Brian. Touching video tributes to Dennis & Carl, then an excellent SS version of H&V, the only SMiLE song of the night (criminal. I shouted out a request for "Surf's Up" at the top of my lungs, but alas to no avail of course. Just doing my duty). Another stellar 1st verse for Brian on GV, highlight being the complete newly discovered silent studio footage, only available for viewing during GV on the tour so far, it seems. One long shot I hadn't seen was of Brian singing his part, getting WAY into it, like the shot we've seen when he is coaching Hal Blaine, clapping along. Thus ended the musically interesting portion of the evening. Everyone sung & played very well, the evening was just crying out for more of the creative side of the band's repertoire, at least 3 additional adventurous numbers (Break Away, Country Air, Wonderful, 'Til I Die, Vegetables, Darian singing Darlin', Our Prayer to open the 2nd set, as Al suggested, only to be met with indifference from Love) so that the selection wouldn't be tilted too heavily towards the conservative, at least IMO. They could jettison It's O.K., the 2nd song from the new album, R&R To the Rescue or Barbara Ann, not to mention the obligatory "Kokomo" which would disappoint many fans by its exclusion I guess. Ah, let 'em eat cake! Usual uninteresting encore. All songs performed very solidly, but IMO due to Mike's iron conformist hand on the setlist it narrowly failed to reach the potential heights that the band's concerts at their best are capable of, sorry to say, despite the excellent vocal and instrumental performances. I understand that compromise is necessary for the less hard-core, but it's tilted too far in the other direction to really take off. Unfortunately that's probably what the majority of fans want, at least partially because they've been carefully trained since the late '70s, when the Wilson contingent and the Clean Livers had their cataclysmic split (which Al is on record as having regretted, siding with Love et al) and the oldies revue die was cast when the Wilsons lost that battle, to expect from the BBs. I for one find that very unfortunate, but am certainly thankful to have been able to see them at all last night.

I'm not saying the car and surf tunes are mediocre, you misread what I said. Plus the original vocal blend (still there to an amazing degree even with Carl & Dennis no longer with us) can't be duplicated at the solo shows, even though Brian's band are technically fine singers. I'm not going to get into an argument with you like a lot of people seem to like to do on this board. I think I gave a balanced opinion, I'm a very old -time fan and resent being lectured. If you are completely happy with what the band under Mike's leadership evolved into, that's your opinion and you're entitled to it, just don't get snarky. As I said, I'm very happy that the tour happened, and the concert had many memorable highlights. I just call the band and its history as I see it, and I feel confident that is is one, of many, very valid viewpoints.

I''ve seen a lot of Beach Boys (something over 100 )concerts and this was simply amazing.  Probably in my top 3 of all time dating back to the early 70's.

During the soundcheck, the band performed  Ca Girls, Hawaii, Isn't It Time(twice), California Saga, Then I Kissed Her, Disney Girls, and FRIENDS.  I estimate about 75 people had VIP and Meet and Greet passes.

The guys were spot on tonight and the band tore up the house!

I didn't get my Country Air but I did California Saga!  Too many highlights to mention but ADD SOME MUSIC was beyond awesome.  It was so cool to see the BOYS gathered with Brian at the piano and play one of my favorite tunes from my favorite album, Sunflower.  They sounded fab!

Good night.  I need to think about all that happened earlier tonight!

Kudos to the band!

Oh, Mike mentioned that the new album comes out on June 5 at least twice.

That's good to hear, Les. I was wondering if it was just magical from my perspective, but if it's in your top 3, that means a lot. Really felt some freaky energy out there. I imagined DW walking through the crowd at one point.

I rarely post here, so don't lump me in with everyone that gets talked about behind their backs (personal). I was not insulting you personally. It's just that I didn't call the car and surf songs mediocre, and I know full well who Brian's collaborators were, ML among those who did fine work with him.

also, 'kiss me baby' and 'marcella' may have been in reverse order, I can't remember.

My prediction for songs that will ultimately be performed on this tour at some point that we haven't yet heard:

1 Friends (cheated!)
2 Break Away
3 Surf's Up
4 Wonderful
5 'Til I Die
6 Caroline No
7 Here Today
8 something from WILD HONEY (I still think "Aren't You Glad" would be the best choice, but more likely "Darlin'" or the title track)
9 Farmer's Daughter
10 Girl Don't Tell Me
11 Salt Lake City
12 Good to My Baby or Don't Hurt My Little Sister
13 Time to Get Alone
14 Cabinessence
15 Cool Cool Water
16 Don't Go Near the Water
17 Lookin' at Tomorrow
18 Good Timin'
19 Honkin' Down the Highway

and some total curve balls ("Day in the Life of a Tree"? "Amusement Parks USA"? "In the Back of my Mind"? "LIFE IS FOR THE LIVING"!?!?)

I hate to complain about the setlist because we're getting an average of 45 songs here in 2012 so I will stick to tweaking it :)
I know Mike is firmly in control of the set list as we have yet to see any of his lead vocals dropped.  I feel like it might be time to rotate It's Ok , Little Honda, or Don't Back Down out. I still think Al is not being utilized enough. They add Cal. Saga but drop another of his lead vocals. It's almost like ok Al we'll add your song but you have a limit of 5 songs.  They dropped Youre So Good To Me, if Brian didn't want to sing it let Al sing it. It's always been a good tune live. I don't really get Betsy unless they really wanted to give Scott a lead vocal cause Jeff had one? But Mike and Bruce have been playing that one for years really, it's not that special. If they want to give the back up band another lead Darian on Darlin would be far better.  Just personal preferences I guess.

I agree with the comments above. I do wish Al would get a few more leads; he has the best voice of the group by far and sounds great. But in general I've been ok with the setlist; better than what I had oiginally expected it to be honestly, with quite a few chestnuts. And if they reheardsed FRIENDS at the sound check, that would lead me to believe that's one of the songs that the California Saga kids will be performing with the band on Saturday. Perfect choice, IMHO.

He deleted it because he was being obnoxious! I think he was raggin' on Hal (Mutedtrumpeterswan) who hardly ever posts here anyway. Why bother nit-picking a review - the guy's taking the time to post a review of the concert through what he saw in his own opinion. And it wasn't even objectionable or harmful. Damn, give the guy a break.

I'll probably post more later on the show. But quickly, I'll say this. I can be pretty analytical about this kind of stuff and I'm the last person to make a snap judgment of how amazing a show could be. But..... This *may* have been the best show I've ever seen....... Beach Boys-related or otherwise.....

I've seen enough of these guys to know when it's an "on" night for the band and the audience. The band was "on", all the members were "on", and the audience was great and not annoying as some "casual" masses of fans can be. Great setlist. A "new" addition to the setlist. Everybody in good mood and good voice. Good sound. Great weather. My seats were way better than I assumed they would be. Bought some swag at the merch stand. Will probably buy more on the website.

The only way it could have been better is another hour-long set.........

WOWOWWOWOWOWOW.

I'm going to post more later when I can get my thoughts/photos/videos together but wow! That was easily one of the best nights of my life. An incredible show. I nearly keeled over when I heard the first notes of "Kiss Me Baby" (I'd been avoiding peeking at previous set lists and had NO idea it was coming.)

Looking back at the other recent reviews of the shows on this site, I have to guess that Brian was quite as "on" this show as recent others. There weren't any incidents or anything, but he seemed to be wanting to get it over with.

Not complaining though, at all. I am beyond elated.

Photos to come!

Yeh I noticed BW seemingly randomly getting really into certain songs. I noticed he was singing along to songs here and there, and playing the keyboard quite a bit more than I expected. He was rocking around and making weird hand gestures during 'Disney Girls', and I think he was playing along to 'All This is That' as well. Wish I could remember more details.

Oh I didn't even notice that. I had a pretty bad view of him. I was in the front row but I was in front of Al, so for the most part, all I saw was the top half of his head and the rest was covered by piano. So I'm only basing this on what I heard and when I watched him during Add Some Music.

Brian was a cut up during the soundcheck, though.

Scott T: "Brian, what song do you want to sing?"
Brian: "Do It Again"
Everyone: "......."
Mike: "Yeah I want to do that one too."

Brian: "Perfect, teleprompter, perfect."

And then when he just got up, walked across the stage, and started gesturing for the entire audience to leave. HAHA.

For the same reason Dennis sang "Help Me, Rhonda" in the early seventies with Al standing on stage with him.

Oh I didn't even notice that. I had a pretty bad view of him. I was in the front row but I was in front of Al, so for the most part, all I saw was the top half of his head and the rest was covered by piano. So I'm only basing this on what I heard and when I watched him during Add Some Music.

Ivy, that wasn't you in the front row standing up and screaming stuff at Mike Love before they started "All This Is That", was it?

It seems I posted a picture of that in this thread. I really don't know what theat means, though. Is it something like a video interview?

did Mike sing it or Al?

Brian opened it, then Mike & Al sort of started in unison, and Al was looking at Mike kind of funny like, "Aren't you singing this?" ... and then he sort of seemed to realize Mike didn't quite know the words beyond the first verse, so he took over.

Al said: "We figured Berkeley is the perfect place to place this ... that was from 1973, the Holland album".

Weird thing is the backdrop screen had 'jazz cigarette' smoke going through the whole song (and only this song) !

here is why that probably happened. on may 19th scott emailed me saying al was wanting to do calif saga. kept asking scott about doing it. scott asked me for copies of the song. i sent him the versions i had. yesterday they did it at soundcheck. at dinner brian asked scott across the dinner room if they were going to do that song that night. brian told scott that al didn't think they were ready to do it and what did scott think. scott told brian that he thought it went pretty well at soundcheck. brian asked scott to talk to al about the song. so scott talked al into doing saga last night. scott said brian wanted to do that song last night and was happy that they did it. so that explains that about al and mike and the lyrics.

California Saga went off without a hitch. Mike said they hadn't done it in many years, but you wouldn't know it - you'd think it was a regular staple in their set. Outstanding vocal by Al - you could hear every word clearly. Can't remember if Brian did the intro like he did on the record. The whole band was into it and it brought a loud applause. Good timing, Al!

During Good Vibrations, someone came in a bit early on the "I hear the sound..." part before being doubled by what sounds like Jeff.  Is that Brian?  Definitely sounds like it to me.  If it is him, I don't remember him trying this before live, just the lower vocal harmony he does sometimes.

I’m not sure how much people still want to see a review of a show from a few nights ago, but here are more thoughts on this amazing Berkeley show:

I’d have to say 46 songs is a pretty nice setlist. I already see complaints about a “conservative” setlist, but I have trouble buying that in light of the fact that never in a million years would I have thought that a 2012 reunited BB’s would play two songs from “Carl and the Passions”! Sure, even more rarities would be nice. But there wasn’t a dud in the setlist. I’d probably jettison a few things like “Do You Wanna Dance” for something more substantial, but we all have our personal picks.

The guys seemed really relaxed both vocally and personality wise. Maybe three days off helps, I dunno.

Scott Totten seemed to be really into it, and came to the front of the stage at the beginning to get everyone to clap. His guitar malfunctioned at some point during the show (looked like maybe his strap or strap lock broke?) and he had to hand his guitar over mid-song and sang the rest of the song sans any guitar. He must be a true guitar player, as evidenced by how awkward he was without the guitar!

Bruce was in full cheerleading mode for the entire concert.

Mike still seemed to be reading a lyric sheet for “Isn’t It Time”, as well as “California Saga.”

Everybody’s voice sounded great. Brian does very little heavy lifting in this show, which probably works best. He sounded pretty good overall. Mike sounded shockingly smooth, as did Bruce. Al sounded amazing as always.

I’m firmly in the “yes, I can hear autotune and yes, it’s usually really annoying” camp, but I didn’t hear a note of autotune at the show.

The video screen was cool, and occasionally an intentional or unintentional source of hilarity. Some of the graphics they use are laughably ridiculous. My favorite was an image played during “Be True to Your School” that was literally an old picture of somebody’s finger pointing to California on a map.

Band seemed to occasionally turn around and watch the screen too, especially during the “Sloop John B” promo film for some reason. Dunno if that was new.

Some cool studio footage during “…. God Made the Radio” (new) and “Good Vibrations” (old).

A few days later, and I’m still firmly of the belief that this may have been the best show I’ve ever seen….

And the female silhouette that showed up in any songs with the word "dance" in the title... with the skirt and the knee-high boots and the boobs and stuff..... I'm sorry but I just can't take that and Al Jardine in on the same eyeballs.

What a great show that was!  Highlights to me were 'Please Let Me Wonder', 'IJWMFTM', 'Don't Back Down', the tributes (Forever and GOK) and...sorry...'Rock and Roll Music' which seemed to fit real good and was a fun rocker when it showed up in the second set.

Liked both of the new tunes, and am looking forward to going out tomorrow to get the record.

What a cool time to be a long time fan!!!

One song I would have wished for:  Surf's Up

P.S. Saw Brian on the second SMiLE tour here in '05. This show was every bit as fun. It's so great to see the whole gang together again (last time I saw the whole lineup was in '86).

Does anyone think the whole band would ever tour again or is this it?

Late to the game, I realize, but I thought I would share the email I sent to my former bandmates. They were subjected to countless hours of Smile and PS outtakes for many years trapped with me in a van crossing the country. I'm surprised the H&V vocal outtakes alone didn't cause them to dump me off in the middle of Kansas.

The Beach Boys were, there's no better way to put it, fucking awesome.

Man, not what I was expecting.

I never could have dreamed of seeing them own their catalog the way they did.

Fears going in:
Mike being an annoying prick
Brian sitting with his hands on the keys and staring into space
Brian's amazing band covering all the vocal parts (great, but not the Beach Boys)
A very unadventurous set list

Mike was actually funny and sounded good after three days rest. He even seemed touched when talking about Carl.
Brian was playing piano almost the whole time and was actually in the mix. He sang lead on a bunch of songs and never needed to be covered (except for the falsetto parts which Jeff Foskett handles).
They played 46 songs! Including every hit, but also about 12 lesser known songs and two new ones.

Their vocals were stunning and on several songs only one or two of the back up band were singing.

The great thing about Brian's band is they do what the 70's and 80's touring juggernaut never did; they stay true to the sounds of the records (tones, timbers, instruments). So, you get a French horn on the intro to "God Only Knows" instead of a synth and a six string bass on the "Dance, Dance, Dance" guitar riff.

There were only two guys from Mike's touring Beach Boys. And they were great choices. Brian's drummer is all finesse, like having Hal Blaine handle his original parts. Mike's drummer reminded me of you, David. He rocked with taste. And he is none other than John Cowsill of the Partridge-family inspiring 60s family band The Cowsills. He just gave everything a bit of extra energy. He was also, by the way, in Tommy Tutone and sang backgrounds and played drums on Jenny (867-5309), so the two of you also have that in common.

Anyway, I think Houston is sold out, but this is well worth seeing. Shocking really. Maybe I just caught them on a good night...a sold out show in California after a three day break, but 8000 others and I were floored.

I exchanged a few words with Al after the show as he signed autographs.

And I got the set list.

Love and mercy,
Dan
